    Manky pipes!!

Wow some of you guys clean them loads! I clean my filters monthly but disconnecting the pipes is tricky... I'm expecting the filters to be squeaky clean next time i look though..

    Manky pipes!!

Last week I bit the bullet and cleaned my pipes for the first time, the tank has been running for about 13 months and I could see the pipes were a touch manky inside. Also when I switched my filter off and on a load of 'stuff' would come out the outlet. Anyway it took me the best part of 3 hours...

You don't have to change all that water

This is mildly related so hear me out! I've been watching Foo the Flowerhorn on Youtube, his videos are great, I'd highly recommend them. He has a bunch of 30l ish tanks but what struck me was he doesn't use filters or ferts, there is zero circulation, and they look great. So I've been looking...

    Tank overhaul!

Yeah, what I want is something that looks nice, is easy to maintain and is a nice habitat for the fish. I would really like to do a fancy aquascape but firstly I don't have the skill and secondly I tend to lose interest in the summer so things get a bit overgrown. I'd also need to buy an inline...

    Tank overhaul!

Its my tank over the course of last year, I set it up in November 17... This is the problem I'm not really sure what I want to do. I need to put something down over the soil to stop it getting into the filter that's my main objective just now.

    Tank overhaul!

Greetings! Well that been just over a year now and my tank has been through some ups and downs but I now think its time to do some re-jiggling... My tank went from this - To this And now looks like this One of the dimmers on my Chirrios lights melted so I went down to one light. Then...

    Any suggestions?

Cool thanks, flattened moss balls is a cunning plan! Yes I need to take some action to try and sort this algae out.. I was intending on putting shrimp in to help with the algae so I put a couple in to see if they would survive but they have disappeared.. I'll maybe just bite the bullet and suck...

    Any suggestions?

This is my first big tank and it’s been running since November. It’s 400l, I’m running 2 60cm chirios A series leds at half strength, an APS 2000l filter. Water parameters are all good but the ph is higher than my small tank which I blame on the white sand I bought that I hate. It sits at high...

    Bubbling substrate?

Ah I see, that makes sense. Maybe my impeller needs a bit of clean then?

    Bubbling substrate?

Well that's a relief! I was worried something unpleasant was happening... I've also got a small internal filter running, I put it in there when I set it up to help polish the water and to add a bit of flow as I haven't got round to buying a wave maker yet. Every now and then I see bubbles...

    Bubbling substrate?

Hi guys, I've got small bubbles coming from my substrate. Not a lot but its definitely happening. I've got a fairly thin layer of white coarse substrate which was a bad move as it has now turned green. Is it possible for algae to pearl? I've got some of my plants pearling which is good but I...

Got this big vase from a friend. Any ideas?? It has a slight crack in the bottom but it doesn't seem to be leaking. Could attack it with silicon to be safe... Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk

    First big tank!

Yeah I didn't quite mean for it to look so square but I'm kind of commited now! I think I'll lay some rocks at the edges to round them off. The substrate is about 2 inches at the back and about 1 inch at the front. Didn't want to go too deep in case of dead spots.. I'm going to plant java...

    First big tank!

Well I went with the compost and sharp sand, but I bought some fancy sand to jazz it up but it looks like snow! Certainly quite an interesting look.. Yes I moved the spray bar last night and I'm planing to sticking some wave makers in to aid with flow. I've got lots of pottering to do!

    First big tank!

Yeah well I have lots of big chunks of slate that would do the job to build it up. I was also thinking about the gravel in tights sandbag method. I'm just back from home, bought 2 bags of pond compost and 2 bags of sharp horticulture sand. £16... If it works it will be the cheapest substrate in...

Hi folks, My new tank arrives on Thursday! I can't wait, I'm also have having serious problems making my mind up what to do. Sand on substrate?

Yeah it's easy to get carried away, my small tank I have running just now is with play sand and compost and its going fine. The plants certainly ain't growing quick but I see what your saying about slower growth = less maintenance. They are getting a little bit of algae on the leaves but the...

    Sand on substrate?

If I can get my tank looking like that I'll be very happy! Riversand??? So did you just take a bucket to your nearest river, fill it up with sand, give it a bit of a clean and plonk it in your tank? Or do you buy river sand? It makes sense to get materials from nature as they will have a lot of...

    Sand on substrate?

This video by Dennis Wong is good . He says that aquatic plants get most of their nutrients from the water column. Nutrient rich substrate definitely helps but he seems to imply that dirt is all you need. I think I might just stick to pond compost and get some larger grained sand. It seems...

    Hi from Ayrshire!

Hi Kerryn, yeah I've aquatic pond compost under the sand. I'm going to start dosing some ferts and see what happens. I don't want to start throwing money at right now though, want to keep it for the big tank. I might make it into a shrimp tank once I move the fish into the big one... Sent...

    Hi from Ayrshire!

I was plunged into the hobby 2 years ago when my mother in-law bought my daughter 2 goldfish for her birthday. We were completely unprepared and made all the usual mistakes. Sand on substrate?

Hi, first post in this forum, thought I start with a dumb one! Can you use Eco-complete or other plant substrates under sand? I have a 64l tank with aquatic pond compost capped with sand, its been running a few months now and is doing fine. I've ordered a 350l tank and want to use sand again...
