    Brown algae (diatoms) ?

Hi guys, Wonder if anybody could share pearls of wisdom? I’ve a mature planted tank, set up around 3 years ago, co2 injected high tec. Seemingly out of nowhere I’ve developed a brown/black algae on plants, predominantly on slow growers, Anubis, Buce, that I think may be diatoms although as I say...

    Pinnatifida help

Seems a very hit and miss plant for everyone. I have only ever bought it as a tissue culture plant and as mentioned in my original post, it grows well for a time before it then dies off with the older stems shedding leaves and the stems appearing to rot before that then manifests in the newer...

    Pinnatifida help

I wonder if anybody can shed any light on the following. I have pinnatifida in my tank from tissue culture attached to ricks and wood. It seems to do well for a while sending out side shoots and growing well then seems to deteriorate. The leave appear to get tiny holes in them and fall off and...

Tank is evolving. Another small update. Initially wanted an iwagumi style tank. As you can this it’s not quite worked out that way. Added a new piece of wood and some plants I picked up at aquarium gardens. Thanks Steve for your advice and help. h’ra added to back right which needs to grow...

    Man vs Scape

Small update. Eventually decided upon a hardscape layout as per photo attached. Planted up on Wednesday just gone. Foreground Monte Carlo and dwarf hairgrass. Some s repens on right to frame rocks. Hydrophila Araguaia on left with Rotala h’ra at rear to provide a splash of colour.

    Man vs Scape

Ok guys I have decided on a layout. Will upload a photo later as its not one listed above. As this is going to be an Iwagumi style with lots of low growing foreground plants do you think it’s a good plan to add a thin layer of the powder type substrate on top of the aqua soil? This is the...

    Man vs Scape

Thanks for everyone’s feedback thus far. I do like the green aqua scape and had watched the link and just not sure it is easily replicated in the tank dimensions I have? Also I think that the rock layout alone without grown in plants look uninspiring and would come into its own when planted...

Thanks Seige and TBRO. Yes it is the 90 x 90 x 45 tank from Greenaqua. I now appreciate that there is not the depth of that tank in mine which is making the mountain difficult to re create and a little too central on my first attempt (no photos). Have re arranged a couple of stones photo...

Yes super event put on by Dave and aquarium gardens with Filipe and Aquaflora. Dave was a great host and he and his staff were very welcoming and helpful. Bit more of an update. Most things growing well have moved things about a bit to play with flow. Stems doing ok now. The Scape with no name

Hi kadoxu the main reason was I had not decided on planting scheme and was somewhat impatient to get the tank started for cycling particularly as I understand Amazonia leeches ammonia. I’ve been lucky so far that I haven’t had any plants melt thereby producing waste.

Rightly or wrongly I’ve not worried about full EI dosing (until now!) as I understood that over doing ferts within acceptable perameters is to unlikely to cause a problem? I.e the ethos of EI. I’ll reduce if full dose Is not advisable in new set ups? I only started dosing after planting which...

High nitrate and conductivity in tapwater

Cheers guys. I live out in the sticks so should be no issue with industrial pollutants. could the water the currently sits in the bits be used as it's likely to have been sitting there a while?

High nitrate and conductivity in tapwater

Thanks Darrel, I do have rainwater available from various buts collecting from greenhouse and garage. I’m always, perhaps unnecessarily so, concerned about insects etc getting into the system, expiring and polluting the water. Is thus likely to be a problem?

High nitrate and conductivity in tapwater

Hi guys Just looked at the tapwater report for my area and see that the nitrate is just over 41 ppm, the average conductivity is 463, the Clark hardness is 16.68, the german hardness is13.34. Does this speak of RO unit required at least for part if not all water/water changes. Views...

Critique my hardscape Dragon stone and bog wood

Hi Keith thanks your thoughts Adjusted stone at back. It’s is actually big wood that is resting on the stone in the foreground I’m not sure I’m able to stableise without those rocks. The same goes for the other piece you suggest lowering on rhs it’s bog wood and I think I like how it projects out.

hi guys setting up tank and looking at hardscaping. Have dragon stone and big wood. What do you think of the atttached. Have a bag of Amazonia to attach to add to the scape. ADA Africa

I’ve acquired Amazonia as my substrate. I’ve read In a number of forums here that you can plant in this straight away if you have a mature filter. Does that apply to a new set up including new filter or is it best to plant after a few weeks when the tank will be partially cycled?

    Hi Everyone, I'm David

Hi Ian thanks for your reply. So it appears you have lots of flow with the internal, the JBL and the powerhead. Seems that I may need an additional pump/powerhead in any event even with a larger external. Out on interest which Juwel do you have.

    Hi Everyone, I'm David

Hi Ian and Tim, Thanks for your replies. It is my intention to go high energy. It appears I’m ok with the lights and that a larger external filter to increase flow is required. I’ve just got to decide whether to remove the internal filter. Ian I presume that you angled with additional...

    Hi Everyone, I'm David

Hi Edvet, Thanks for your reply. It looked into LED but as you say the tech is relatively new and untested in planted aquaria although I admit that the controllable aspect is quite seductive. I’ll go with T5 and perhaps get reflectors unless not necessary? The good news being I’ve just...
