aquaponic type filter..could this work at all?

On the side of Mavis's tank is a very gentle hang-on filter. Now I am fascinated by this aquaponics stuff, but very lacking in confidence! Anyway, I was wondering if it this could work as a trial attempt... Take the media out of the filter, make a small aquaponics tray and put a couple of...

Recording my journey, although it's pre-school compared to the talents on here!

As you can see, I'm faffing around deciding where to put stuff! I always faff! I need an anti-faff tablet. Daily! :D

Recording my journey, although it's pre-school compared to the talents on here!

Hi all, sorry to leave it so long, been sorting a lot of problems/concerns out and it kind of occupied me above all else. (Only niggles, and bits of this and that, but stuff that wouldn't sort itself out :) ) Anyway, here's some pics of my new attempt regarding this journal/journey! I haven't...

Look what I found clearing out my outside storage area!

Just outside my flat in the back yard is a ramshackle brick built storage area. Previous tenants had left it an awful mess and I finally got round to clearing it. And look what was thrown in some old drawers with old rubbish and newspapers and stuff! This fabulous pump! Wayyyyyy too big for my...

Hi everyone, I'm starting a project!

Thank you Smells Fishy! I've been reading a bit about the pressurized co2, that was one of the things that made my chin hit the floor  The whole aquascaping thing is so complex, way more than I ever imagined! I think it takes quite a genius mind to fully understand, especially if you are...

Recording my journey, although it's pre-school compared to the talents on here!

I have seen on one of the facebook axolotl groups that a lot of people are using artificial grass as a base. Long term users seeing no ill effects! So, I have ordered some online, pet friendly and iron and something else free (sorry for the vagueness, brain running on 10watt light bulb power...

Hi everyone, I'm starting a project!

The poor things are practically extinct in their natural habitat now aren't they :( Far too many of our earth neighbours being wiped out because of greed, selfishness, the need to claim and change/destroy so much of what should never, ever be ours. Regarding the pond, I have actually wondered...

Please can someone identify this rock for me?

Thank you everyone! I did try using the rocks in my first (very recent) disaster of an attempt at aquascaping. Aside from the fact I didn't actually like it when it was insitu, it was also far too heavy for my inexperienced hands for it to be able to work. Plus, as my finished scape is to be for...

    Quick and easy money saver!

Thank you everyone for the fascinating and conflicting opinions! They've certainly given me plenty to think about, and plenty of avenues (streams ;) ) to investigate! I do like a good variety of opinions, tunnel vision can block out so many important things that could be so important. Much...

Well everyone, thank goodness I have such lovely encouragement! Gives me all the boost I need to start over.. I found it on a youtube video I think... was a while back. Not found it here sorry, am still finding my way around and getting used to the best way to word things in the search function. Am happy for it to be deleted if it's a bit of a 'waste of space' post, although I would like to copy and...

Well there you go, that is another important thing I have learned from being here, thank you ian-m! I am a little confused though, how will I know that my water is safe and comfortable for my axi please? Is there a better way to check, or is it a case of keeping the tank clean and doing partial...

Please can someone identify this rock for me?

There are quite a few of these just lying around an old filled in pond in the communal garden where I live. I've looked online, but can't be sure that what I found is the same thing. I would like to use a couple of pieces in my aquascaping project. The tank I am doing is a cold water setup for...

Recording my journey, although it's pre-school compared to the talents on here!

As some of you know from my intro, this is quite a project for me. It has given me something to focus on, and an achievable goal. I love being creative, and although I've never excelled at anything, I've produced some pretty nice things in the past. Because of the onset of Huntingtons disease...

I think this will fit in well in this section, will move it if not? Anyway, thought this worth sharing, although I can not take credit for this smart little idea, I saw it elsewhere. Hi everyone, I'm starting a project!

Hi Foxfish, thank you for the welcome :) Mavis is a leucistic axolotl, and she is about 6 months old. I'm absolutely enchanted by her. I'm going to have to watch her weight a bit I think though, she is just starting to look a little bit tubby. Here's a picture of her (pre-tubbiness ;) )

Slow & Steady - First tank!

Oh my word, that is looking fab already! I'm new here too, and starting my first aquascape, but I'm totally clueless! I think I will journal my progress (I mean 'attempt' lol ) I love that tank too, been looking at one like that on eBay. That may well be my project number 2 :D

Hi everyone, I'm starting a project!

I think it will be really good for me having this to focus on. I used to love sketching and painting and doing arts and crafts and such like, but the Huntingtons is really affecting my control of my hands quite often now, so those things have bitten the dust really, I can barely write my own...

The metal clipped/glued on strip across top of tank, can I remove it?

It is very firmly glued on Fozziebear, so yes I think I will leave it. I will paint it a colour to match my background and decoration stuff, that will make it look nicer I think. Thank you for replying

The metal clipped/glued on strip across top of tank, can I remove it?

I've done it :) Are these pics any good? It has a lid that rests on those inner ledges and just about meets the to[p of the glass. It's a big ugly thing to be honest, but the way it sits, it's perfect fit but offers no structural support.

I will take a picture now Fozziebear. Unbranded tank though. BRB. I am sorry, I can't find how to upload the photos Fozziebear :(

The metal clipped/glued on strip across top of tank, can I remove it?

Hello, please will someone tell me if it is safe to remove that eyesore of a metal band/strip that runs across the upper front and upper back edges of my tank? It is not supporting the corners at all, it is just glued to the front panel and one of the back too. My gut says ''Yes, it's safe to...

Hi everyone, I'm starting a project!

I have decided to try my hand at aquascaping a new home for my axolotl, Mavis :) (My real name is Anne by the way, but 'PiddleMouse' holds a certain kind of class that boring 'Anne' never will, dont you agree? :D ) Anyway, my project! Mavis is currently in a very dull, but well looked after 30 x...
