How to mix EI salt solution for low tech/What doesn't mix well with other chemicals?

Thanks for the help guys! Clive I lol'd when i saw you wrote the article on APFUK. It feels like I knew a celebrity from before they were famous :D I noticed my tests reveal plenty nitrates in the water column, which is why is used to dose phosphates, traces and other stuff from easy life. It...

How to mix EI salt solution for low tech/What doesn't mix well with other chemicals?

Greetings kind ladies and gentlemen of UKAPS. I return to you today after reading ceg4048's article on EI and all of the info available on the aquariumplantfood website. I have several low tech tanks as follows: 3 fluval spec Vs 2 dennerle 55l cubes 1 ciano 80L all heavily planted and lit low...

    054l - My own Borneo

Looks nice man. All slow growers. Remove the carbon from your filter. All it does is soak up your ferts. Seems a bit high effort for the plants you keep. For me those grow with weekly ferts and 20% water change every 2 or 3 weeks. Low tech. I keep shrimp and endlers.

    Dry start - ammonia advice

You forget ammonia is plant food. It's toxic for fish and inverts yes. Once you fill er up, you'll be going through quite a few water changes before u add fish.

Is Tourmaline safe for use in tanks?

Hi fish bros! I just picked up a few pieces of tourmaline at the museum. I intend to give them a proper wash and scrub and soak and use them in my tank as hardscape. I couldn't find much info to indicate it's a bad idea so I thought I'd ask around here. Tank is a low tech planted with London...

    Mystery plant

Yeah. Same happened to me. I was sold one and then found out it's a bog plant for paludariums or terrariums. If you keep it submerged it just dies slowly. Usually 1-3 months. Took it back and asked for another plant double the price for wasting my time. It even said "For Terrariums" on the pot.

    Anubias leaves developing holes

Easy Carbo has damaged my anubias in the past. But not in the same way. My leaves just darkened at the stem and got diformed. You sound like you have a deficiency but you dose EI so it shouldn't be. Could be the sign of toxicity. Are you seeing dark lines in your fast growing plants? This is...

    New to co2. Advice needed

From my understanding, if you get a big bottle 2-5kg and a dual stage regulator (dual stage just means there are two stages where the pressure is reduced and regulated - this spreads the wear&tear over more parts and there is less chance of failure and less fluctuations in the gas flow) maybe...

Thank you all for all of your input and resources. This thread as a whole was very helpful to me. Hit me up if you're in London and want some free endlers

Why do my snails keep dying?

I lost a few nerites after I fixed my gsa issue too well. Did it by dosing phosphates so the nitrates disappeared, repositioning some plants (highlight plants in direct light and low light plants in shade) and feeding less. I think I starved the nerites.

Encouraging Amano shrimp to explore the rest of the tank

I have witnessed my amanos being shy for weeks. I have a dozen of them and they were first in my tank. Then I added tetras and corys. All fine. Then I added gouramis. Still fine but more shy. I think it's when I added some swordtails that i stopped seeing them. Also about that time I used big...

    Shrimp choice help :)

Gouramis and the mollie will harass shrimp and eat baby shrimp. Pleco might accidentally beat up some babies as well. Tetras will also go for shrimplets when they are very young. If you buy bigger amanos they will be fine, but the will need a place to hide. Adult cherry shrimp will most likely...

    Endler Livebearer breeding questions

A few months back I got some Endler's Livebearer breeding pairs from LFS. I decided that I'll try to get colored females as a breeding project. I thought this was possible after seeing strains of regular guppies where females are fully colored and also have fin variants. One of the females I...

Anyone tried taking fish to MA? (Endler Boom)

MA Wembley said they take them but give you no money. Pets at Home Camden said they won't because they have no quarantine tank. LFS in Bethnal Green (stay away from Lee. Talk to Chris) buys pairs at 40% but you need to call ahead and then they will haggle you down hard, usually with "bad math"...

How do you choice your plant balance?

What I decided to do to keep things simple, knowing that I have certain tap water parameters, certain livestock, certain lights, time and money, was to put in ALL the plants I like in one tank in a spot that would suit them (shade or direct light). Some grew, some died, some were shredded by...

    Help - plants melting noob

Well something has actually changed hasn't it? You have more plants. Therefore more "mouths" to feed. Try an extra squirt of ferts every other day for a week or two. Careful not to change many things at once. If you do, you won't know what works. Since it's your first planted tank, it may be...

    Cleaning tank with frogbit.

I ran into this issue. Sometimes for a proper trim, i need to remove all my floaters. This will break roots and leaves off in the tank and they're a pain to collect. So I get a bowl and use an oversized comb, like a massive afro pick, to scoop out all the frogbit into said bowl. After I'm done I...

Health of my plants. Problematic alternathera reinekii

Diatoms are the first algae 99% of us see. I personally cut some straight patterns into a diatom stain to see if it spreads or if it's dead, cos dead and living diatom colonies look alike. After diatoms green algae comes and goes when plants take over. CO2 is usually the bottleneck in any tank...

Health of my plants. Problematic alternathera reinekii

A huge problem I see is people thinking that if a plant has long roots, then the plant can be moved and the roots still work. Well not really. The thick roots that we can easily see are conduits. They don't do much nutrient absorption. Nutrient uptake happens through almost invisible capillary...

Health of my plants. Problematic alternathera reinekii

Ok OP please listen. Alternanthera is a fickle one. Alto gave you solid advice. STOP MOVING THE PLANT. Stick to a low photoperiod at first and only dose CO2 1 hour before lights on and stop 1 hr before lights off. Alternanthera will have a long period where it adjusts. It will look dead, all...

    Java moss turning white

I did a rescape recently and some of my plants were outside water for about half a day. I tried my best to spritz them with tank water periodically to keep them moist, but some dried. dosing a low tech tank on a 'Thames Water' supply with an allinone solution

Oh look at all the Thames Water people here! We should seriously grab a pint and discuss this. I have so many questions that might not benefit the community. But still: 1. Dosed potassium and all my amanos stopped eating. Why? 2. Can't get rid of GSA? 3. Nitrates out of the tap are around 50...

Tropica soil low PH during cycling? Feedback please

Most substrate systems trap nutrients and have a softening effect on the water. The ability to soften water goes away with time, usually a few months.

    New tank advice

All setups are different. I recommend patience and logging activities. If you're using soil capped with gravel, you have a good candidate for a dry start, but you seem to have plants available to you. Thing is, you have amix of low/high light plants. Make sure low light plants like anubias stay...

    Mistake

If your sump, which I assume holds a lot of filtration media, had an oversaturation of CO2, I'd assume a lot of your aerobic bacterial colonies were killed. This would result in an ammonia spike AND hight TDS AND pH change AND toxins AND low oxygen water being pumped into your tank at once. This...

9 neons dead, 3 to go.

I floated the bag for about an hour or more while pouring in some tank water in 10ml increments. I then scooped them all out with my own net and threw away the LFS water. Also, one of the 4 guppies I got that day has recently passed away as well. 2 neons are still alive.

    Little Bedroom Aquarium Recommendation

It's marginally better for the plants and it makes colors pop when used in conjunction with a white strip. If used on its own, it makes the tank look pink and purple. Amanos don't come out anymore

Update: Amanos still hiding. They used to forage and pick at things non stop. They used to shred blanched spinnach super quick. I got a dozen neon tetras the other day from lfs. As i was there, a young member of staff was doing maintenance on all tanks at once, including a 20% water change. Pest snails - best bait for traps?

There is a maximum nr of snails that will live in your tank if you feed your fish properly .When they cap off they will stop breeding. Hello. A few days ago, to fix some plant problems, I've started dosing EasyLife Kalium and Fosfo. I had almost zero phosphates and tons of nitrates. I also got a new batch of plants from an online supplier. The plants had mould on the rockwool, but I washed them well. I put a really large...
