    Aquascaping meetup - Norwich 26.01.2020

That's great news, well done to all involved. I was in South Norfolk that Sunday too, but I had a 3hr drive and I would have been getting back in the early hours on a school night! Anyway, hope to be able to make the next one.
  2. The Accidental Aquascaper

    First properly planted tank

I'm stumped then. Here's a photo of what mine looks like, so you can compare. Try to get a photo of yours at a similar angle. Stand back and have the camera the same height as the waterline.
  3. The Accidental Aquascaper

    First properly planted tank

Is the bottom inlet as open as it can be? If the air is still being sucked down, you must have a very powerful filter.
  4. The Accidental Aquascaper

Forest Diorama in a second hand beat up bowfront

The mist (cloudy water) after first filling looks great. I think I can see the headless horseman from sleepy hollow riding towards me! Have you thought about Chilli Rasboras? They seem less timid, even though they're half the size of the Galaxy's.
  5. The Accidental Aquascaper

    First properly planted tank

So are you saying the skimmer gets sucked down? Maybe the water level isn't high enough? If you can't fill anymore, can you position the skimmer suckers lower?
  6. The Accidental Aquascaper

    First properly planted tank

Welcome and good luck! The skimmer part floats. Lift it up and put it back in, it should trap some air in the top section which will keep it afloat. Then you need to adjust the amount the bottom inlet is taking in. The less inflow at the bottom, the more it will skim at the top. I have to pretty...

    Aquascaping meetup - Norwich 26.01.2020

Great stuff Jake. I would like to see more gatherings like this, but unfortunately can't make this one. (unless I can think of a cast iron excuse for wifey). It's a long way for me, but I'm a big fan of Scaped Nature, which I only get to visit when I'm in South Norfolk. On that note, are there...

    Critique my hardscape Forest hardscape

I think that mock tank is at Aquarium Gardens. The moss will look better if you do the DSM. Glueing on big clumps makes it bushy and prone to lifting (as I have recently discovered). Another thing I've realised is you can't have too many supports for keeping the substrate banked up.
  9. The Accidental Aquascaper

    The Crack

I actually quite like it on the rocks. Look at this, I see sheep on a distant Welsh hillside. Hope you get it sorted.

Critique my hardscape Setting up new scape

Better or worse, it's all subjective really. I'll only talk about the LH side to keep things simple. The rock placement in both has it's good and bad points for me. What they both do in a slightly different way is lead you to the focal point. The new version does this buy making a curve/path...

First Aquascape Idea - ID and Direction Please

The design is your classic triangle, which is probably the most tried and tested of all the designs, which is good because you’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. I would start by going to all your LFS and cherry picking the hardscape. Once you’ve got your rock and wood, you can then decide...

    The Accidental Aquascape

Back from Dorset and I'm already seeing some growth in the Wabi Kusa. It's in my Ikea grow light for herbs (thanks father christmas) at the moment, but I'll probably get it a small light of it's own. Anyone have some suggestions for a small clip-on light? Miraculously, there have been no...

    The Accidental Aquascape

Thanks guys. Added a few more plants today. I’ll do my best to keep it going, but it’s my first attempt, so I’ve no idea how to maintain this thing. If all goes well I’ll post it’s progress.

    The Accidental Aquascape

Not quite an update, but I’m away from home and therefore the tank, so I just had to scratch that itch and make this wabi kusa. I anticipated that I might need to take a break from the festive fun, so I brought a few essentials with me. All the flora is from around the property we’re staying...

  23. The Accidental Aquascaper

    New ADA light: Aquasky RGB

That is very nice indeed, but it's way too stylised for my liking. I would have thought the ADA ethos would be along the lines of "the plants/fish are the stars". The light unit should be almost invisible when looking at the tank front on, but the sexy angles and engraved logo do the opposite...

Quick update. Things have been getting better very slowly. Still have some algae issues, but it's not coming back quite as quick. Overall the vast majority of the plants are growing reasonably well, but I'm still struggling with the Hygro Pin. Even the Eriocaulon seems to be happy (3rd time...

    Scape corner

Ok, this might sound silly...but. I’ve read that it’s fine to use an electric toothbrush in an aquarium. I was seriously tempted to do this at the weekend, but didn’t, as I only have one toothbrush and thought better of it. Just throwing it out there bro...;)
  29. The Accidental Aquascaper

    Green thread algae

I can’t really see much, but I guess it’s really fine. Could some of it be growth from the moss? My moss does a similar thing, but I’m fairly certain it’s not algae. I haven’t had any spiderweb type stuff though. Expert please!

Things have been chugging along nicely for the large tank (I can't say that for the cube, but I'll leave that for another day). 100x30x30 tank

I think the 2nd one is the best of the 3. It’s more natural and you’ve got rocks in front and behind, which has made the tank look deeper. really interesting rock/wood. I guess it’s petrified wood right?
  44. The Accidental Aquascaper

    100x30x30 tank

Nice start and materials. Is that rock in the last 2 photos? I think they need to be spread apart a bit more, which would make it look similar to the composition of my large tank :) Or you could turn the rock on the right to point right? Have you got more hardscape? Loving the hardscape breaking...

You can always adjust the flow with a valve, which is what I did when the fish first went in. If you're going to have a lot of plant mass and hardscape, you might need the 200. Ahh, yes, starting the thing. I can't remember how it fills (probably just syphons itself), but it's easier to start...

    Oase filtosmart

I’ve got the filtosmart 100. It’s good, but I do miss the prefilter the biomasters have. Runs nice and quite even though I’ve just got it sitting on the floor. Does a little fizz every now and then. It’s for my 30cm cube and it’s probably too much flow, so might be alright on your 45cm. It...

Thought it might have been a bit tight back there. Have been staring at this for a little while now and there's something about the middle/right side of the tank that is working really well. I don't want to speak too soon, but I'm pretty certain that's what has happened here, which is a relief. Had some tissue round the tank and it's dried. Thanks guys, panic over...for now!

At the moment, I have two 500ml bottles that last around 6 weeks. Read that as iron bum the first time, very confusing. Doing less of something sounds good to me.
