    Another tank cycling question . . . kind of . . .

Depends on how strong the current is.The lily pipe's job is to reduce current while also looking good. Beware as buceps, some other more sensitive plants can melt from ammonia.Of course best thing when starting out is to have more easy stem plants then slowly replace with other types of plants.
  15. M

I think I figured out the imbalance in my tank

Sufficient amounts of micro nutrients will lead to faster and more healthy growth whereas severe deficiencies will show itself in plant leaves. So in this case, my best guess is that theres excess macro nutrients where the uptake is limited by micro nutrients. The reason algae can grow better is...

Tank is 32 litre.Currently five otos five green tetra plus a few shrimps that survived the micrococci purge. The shop is a reputable one theyre healthy have not lost any of the fish i bought which includes the otos and tetras.I didnt buy any gouramis yet just thinking.

You need a ridiculous amount of substrate and usually people will use cheaper but less reliable soil eg loam. Also it could release dangerous ammonia if the environment is too anaerobic, hence the need for a substrate that does not contain too much organic material...

  41. M

    Frogbit taken a turn

Yea you shouldnt especially if they have similar parameters.Generally switching between submerged and emersed will cause it to melt.Your ammonia reading is zero too right.

  54. M

Do water changes cause co2 fluctuation?

Tropica plants are one of the best. However if they are kept too long they can turn unhealthy(yellow).Tap water does contain algae spores.Ideal conditions will make them flourish.Your tank looks clean and nice again though.
  55. M

    HC Cuba Seeds DSM

For melt the leaves will turn yellowish almost transparent then just "melt".For maturation the leaves will turn a darker green or such.U cant really take the trimmings out with net.Siphoning as u thought is ideal as it also keeps the substrate clean.Trim perpendicular to the glass not along and...
  56. M

    Floating plants

Not a bad idea.If I had a pond I would go with azolla to use as fertiliser for my plants.I only have phyllanthus mirabilis which is a land plant hmm.Leaves close at night hehe.
  57. M

    Root growth fertiliser

I thought the pores in carbon will also trap the nutrients?I could be wrong though because I dont use it.Also I was assuming it was a mature tank as he stated cloudy water occurred after adding the root tablets.
  58. M

Carpet plants in non co2 aquarium?

Does your monte carlo melt when switching from emersed to submersed? My MC looks rather sad haha.
  59. M

    Frogbit taken a turn

Nope. What you have should be melting as they are adjusting to the different tank conditions.Do u have different water params besides temperature?

Mine is ADP-300C.I have realised that after using for a few hours it would get quite hot(50-60 degrees).Does anyone know about its efficiency and lifespan compared to chihiros?I bought it from an aquarium shop sometime last year.
  63. M

    100+ppm calcium and nutrient uptake

Full EI is good enough.Iron would be less available if ph is above 7.5 but since ure doing EI no need to worry.Just rmb alternate day dosing cos no matter what the pH is the micronutrients will still react with Phosphorus.Pretty much the same as for soil...
  64. M

    Chihiros help please

I never buy stuff from china.Too cheap is bad. They sell a lot of bad stuff.
  65. M

    Water evaporation

Because Im from singapore the temperature here is about 29 degrees celsius for indoor tanks.Relative humidity plays a part too!
  66. M

Do water changes cause co2 fluctuation?

Agreed only farms and high intensity breeders would bother that much in freshwater systems. But then again when the water is too cold the respiration rate of fish drops hence the excess oxygen is useless and too hot the increased respiration worsens the low oxygen situation.
  67. M

    90x45x45 medium tech :)

Peat moss is not the same as sphagnum moss, its harvested from bogs.It replenishes extremely slowly and I think we are using it way faster than we should. https://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1150845/#b
  68. M

    90x45x45 medium tech :)

Yes at least for approx 1-2 years.Moss peat is a non renewable resource though.
  69. M

    90x45x45 medium tech :)

Alright so the co2 is working hmm
  70. M

    A few shrimp questions . . .

Amanos are bigger. They wont eat adults but the adults may hide especially if there are less than ten cherries.A planted tank will let them hide and breed though but u may see them less than u would like to.
  71. M

    90x45x45 medium tech :)

When u turn off co2 it doesnt change to a lighter colour?
  72. M

    100+ppm calcium and nutrient uptake

Tap water commonly contains nutrients.Curling is due to stress, perhaps changes in TDS when changing water.Perhaps the plants werent too happy to begin with.Distorted leaves is generally too much nutrients or too little. Are u putting root tabs directly below the plants?
  73. M

Fish die, videos attached HELP please!

Bacterial infections generally turns the body of guppies white which isnt the case in the videos.Visible darting, something like trying to rub against the rocks are sure signs of parasite.Cant see at least from the video so can guess its internal?
  74. M

    The Island - ADA 75P - It's been a while....

Nice tap water maybe i should move over.Mine has TDS 150-200 from the tap which is still ok.Brighter light will also turn them redder but be careful about algae.
  75. M

    Flea Farm

Nice.Spirulina is expensive though haha.U mean treat not supplement.U can add more to get more growth though.
  76. M

    Aquagredients: First Time

Yep do a 50% water change will help with the visibility. :)
  77. M

Recommendations for a shrimp safe adhesive that cures wet . . .

Just a suggestion but u can also use fishing line especially for plants that dont attach and normal sewing thread for other plants.Marks shrimp tanks uses it on youtube for the latter so it should be alright.
  78. M

Do water changes cause co2 fluctuation?

Fish are more tolerant of high co2 than shrimps but TDS will affect dissolved oxygen and hence gasping?Higher tds means less dissolved oxygen and i think co2 too.As a general guide harder to keep fish will be more sensitive due to the ph drop caused by co2 and perhaps other factors.
  79. M

    Floating plants

I dont use floaters as they grow like mad and significantly decrease light to the other plants at the bottom.Just my preference though.Getting them in is easy but getting them out isnt.A heavily planted bottom also wards off algae too but may need some time to acquire. :)
  80. M

    Root growth fertiliser

Also if u are not running co2 the root tabs should be used around once every 3 months even in a heavily planted tank.
  81. M

    Root growth fertiliser

Do u have an ammonia test kit?Cloudy water seems like bacteria bloom caused by ammonia spike. Are u using root tabs meant for aquarium plants?Aquarium ferts are supposed to supply nitrogen in form of nitrates and not ammonia. Also yes the carbon in the filter is considered chemical filtration as...
  82. M

    A few shrimp questions . . .

21 times is quite overkill.I had sulawesi snail shells dissolving in my tank.If ph is lower than 6.5 its gonna be a real prob.If between 6.5 and 7 can try one nerite.Hmm the fish u like would only go well with amanos.
  83. M

Carpet plants in non co2 aquarium?

Thanks for finalising my shopping list haha.I lost about 40-50% of monte carlo that i bought one week and two days ago grr.I have pretty high lighting but my mum limits my lighting because she says its bad for the electricity bill.
  84. M

    90x45x45 medium tech :)

Co2 always lime green?hmm maybe too much ferts
  85. M

    3rd Time Lucky 45p

Shrimp generally only eat green algae unless theyre really hungry.Heard nerite snails at a rate of 1 per 10 gallon works too!Otherwise could consider otos they are small and peaceful.
  86. M

    Flea Farm

Well you need green water and yeast and preferably airstone to get enough to feed your fish. Keep a few cultures as well in case one crashes.I had gammarus come in with my aquatic plants.
  87. M

    Water evaporation

Same here, smaller tanks or tanks with more surface area lose water to evaporation more quickly.I lose abt 1-2 litres per week from my 32 litre tank but luckily my tap water TDS ia about 150-200.Watch yr TDS though :)
  88. M

    A few shrimp questions . . .

In that case your son probably wouldnt like shrimp they are not that active and just graze around with an occasional shrimp swimming around.Maybe just keep guppies? And choose healthy ones.No clamped fins hovering near water surface no sign of disease. And dont buy if the tank has unhealthy fish...
  89. M

    A few shrimp questions . . .

Y Yep guppies are large.Either amanos or neos.U can also keep otos safely with shrimp. If u want snails ph should be at least 7 or u might have dissolving shells.
  90. M

Do water changes cause co2 fluctuation?

Do u have a drop checker to calculate how much co2 u have?If yr plant mass has increased it would be sensible to inject more co2 as well as dose more ferts?
  91. M

Carpet plants in non co2 aquarium?

Yep thanks guessed patience is a def must with plant growth rates being slower.Anyone tried DHG or MC or marsilea?
  92. M

    90x45x45 medium tech :)

Hmm co2 or nutrients too low?Maintenance wise seems ok.Plants are healthy right?
  93. M

Taking a sump. Back in five minutes...

    Nice contrast
  94. M

    Do Healthy Plants Release Organics?

Apparently so at least for oil spills in the ocean I think.Activated carbon would probably be more effective due to more pores that can trap oils. And since the research papers say absorb well I would think it is.Just do yr maintenance from time to time to prevent oils clogging everything up.
  95. M

    Do Healthy Plants Release Organics?

I believe if its more alkaline then the bases would react with acids which are commonly released by organic substances hence they would turn into other substances. Its the same for land decomposition too ideal ratio C:N is about 20:1.Extreme acidity will make it hard for even bacteria to thrive...
  96. M

Carpet plants in non co2 aquarium?

Does anyone have any experience with carpet plants in non co2 aquarium?
  97. M

    Do Healthy Plants Release Organics?

I have a suspicion that plants are able to absorb these substances that cause black water in aquarium because the colour disappears after time without any water change.Otherwise degradation by light.
  98. M

Do water changes cause co2 fluctuation?

Agreed some salts are better in terms of solubility etc.Might wanna make yr own one but since the algae issue only popped up a week ago while you went away it appears the plants may have depleted the ferts and the leftover ferts would have contributed to algae.
  99. M

    Do Healthy Plants Release Organics?

Humic substances contain many different substances some of which is DOC/DOM eg humic acid. The ones that contribute to the colour are tanninc acids humic acids and other such HS.Yes there are too many such compounds haha. DOC(dissolved organic compounds) are interchangeable with DOM(dissolved...
