If seems like if I were to go down this route of live food, it would be daft not to cultivate the water fleas myself. I'd better do some reading.
Out of interest what do you use for worming and do you treat your main tank or remove the fish and treat?
I had a good look at the pencilfish in quarantine to see whether there was any sign of her losing weight after 24h without food. I noticed she had a tiny white thread training from her. I’ve never seen these fish poop but it looked suspiciously like some of the photos I’ve seen of worms.
Did...
Due to the different types of fish in the tank I feed a variety of different foods, twice per day. I mix and match the different foods rather than use them all at once each time I feed.
Frozen BS (defrosted/diluted)
Frozen Daphnia (defrosted/diluted)
TetraMin Baby
TetraMin Flakes
Tetra Micro...
My current thinking was to test whatever treatment I'm going to administer on one as I hear they can be quite sensitive to medications. If there are positive results then treat the others, or potentially the entire main tank.
That's a shame, it sounds like this is a pencilfish specific condition then. As you say I couldn't find anything useful online and asking in a tropical fish forum also did not gain any useful help or guidance.
I have one female guppy in my tank and she seems bloated too, she looks pregnant...
Quick overview. Planted 125L tank with a good sized external filter (Fluval 307). Injected CO2. Reasonably lean dosing. Water params ~ 50/50 RO/Tapwater (hardwater); GH 12, KH 6,NH3 0, NO2 0, NO3 ~20ppm, PO4 ~0.5ppm. PH between 6.8-7.8 depending on time of day (changes with CO2 levels)...
Gosh that's unlucky. Mine seem to have stayed in the tank although I have put the lid back on. The wider dispersal of light from having the lid off and lights higher was nice, but the rate of evaporation and need to top up several times per week was annoying.
I haven't replaced mine yet but it's really annoying me. I can't believe CO2Art get away with charging so much for such junk - the cheap regulator I had on my small tank from AliExpress was all round better.. I don't care about warranty, thinking of just buying and fitting this...
That's good to know, thanks. I'll continue researching. It sounds like they behave similarly to my dwarf pencilfish. Another possible option is the lambchop rasbora.
Ok so it sounds like Tropco may be my best option. I have brought several fish from them in the past and they have mostly been of good quality. I'm not 100% set on the chilli rasbora yet but I do like their tiny size. I want something small that I can have a decent size school of. These tick...
Just wondering whether anyone in the South East (ideally Kent) is breeding these - or suggestions on how/where to find local breeders?
Tropco is quite local to me but to buy 20 is over £44 (and that's collecting in person) which seems way overpriced based on what I've seen others say they have...
Yes I absolutely agree, and, if you have exposed substrate in one part of the tank and sand in another, you will end up with substrate moving around and spoiling the look of the sand. I'm just about to plant a field of Eleocharis on my sand beach so I don't have to worry/think about it again.
Hmm that would be a shame. The YouTube video I watched suggested trimming all but one of the shoots; perhaps that helps avoid this?
I have some nice little Anubias tucked away in the back left corner as it's quite shaded and I'd read they are good in low light. They seem quite happy - not...
Yes I quite like the hornwart. It came with some shrimp and I just threw it in the tank - it grew from there. I love that it doesn’t put out roots. Earlier this week I did cut/arrange it into some bunches and anchor them into the substrate just to keep it approximately in the area that I want...
I've recently been replanting my tank to try and create something that provides a good natural habitat for the fish, but is lower maintenance on the plant front that it was previously. I've removed all of my Monte Carlo carpeting at it was getting very thick/deep and pruning was a messy...
I don't know whether it's just my imagination but the fish seem a lot happier and more active. Perhaps they're getting more oxygen with the improved airflow.
Thanks, I'll give it a go for a few days. I'd read that black phantoms can be prone to jumping and I have around 6 of them, however they rarely go near the top levels of the tank and I have a reasonably good covering of floating plants.
When you top off the water is it important to use RO...
I have a Roma 125, it has 2x 32W Fluval Plant 3.0 LED lights. While doing water changes, pruning etc, I noticed that with the lid off and lights sitting astride the top rim I get significantly better light coverage inside the tank. I'm thinking of leaving the lid off and lights up there for a...
How did this go? I did a similar thing and it's impossible to avoid having bits of the substrate scattered around on top of the sand. I ended up trying to cover all of the substrate with a layer of sand to stop it being disturbed and moving around. That helps but there's always some dotted...
Well it seems to have settled down a bit now. The output pressure still builds to slightly less, around 60 PSI when the valve is closed but it is managing to open now and settles back down to ~40 PSI. The needle valve is rubbish, need to work out how to replace it.
I've started having an issue with my CO2ART Pro SE after switching out the empty bottle and wonder whether this is a common issue and whether there's something I can do to resolve it? However I adjust the output pressure, when the solenoid is closed the output pressure gauge gradually creeps up...
Bit of an update for anyone who has a similar issue.
I put my single bolivian ram in the main tank for a few days to see whether he would go for the fry. He wasn't that interested and started bullying the coreys so I took him back out.
After looking at different options I removed all but one...
Well that's where I have been smart; I have the campoma in my 40L tank with some Ottos and a RAM - no other guppies or endlers as I agree they are beautiful and I wanted them to remain pure :) I did have 9 fry, but that's dropped to 7 so suspect the Ram had a snack. Never-mind she'll pop out...
I'd have thought some of the more attractive discus must be at the higher end of what most 'average' hobbyists would consider purchasing in terms of tropical fish?
I noticed the same issue and also thought that it was columnaris based on the symptoms. They lived too long for that to be correct, based on what I read about columnaris, but it was definitely something. The problem didn't spread to other fish in the tank (just slowly amongst the neons) but I...
Thanks for the comments everyone.
Once the fry came along I started feeding a small amount three times a day as I'd read guppies (particularly fry) preferred small feeds several times a day rather than one larger session. I've changed my feeding habit now back to once per day and quite...
That’s a lot of guppies to stockpile before offloading, what size tank do you keep them in?
Doesn’t seem viable to sell the snails for £1 each when you consider the time it’ll take to print labels, go to the post office everyday etc. Nice little business project for kids if you have them.
There was some excess algae but that seems to have cleared up as the tank is settling and the plants are establishing themselves. Will the population level off and reduce based on the environment or will they just start eating the plants? Assassin snails not a good idea?
Hi all,
I'm very happy to have my 125L planted tank running for a few months. I have a few concerns regarding my Snail and Guppy populations which are growing rapidly and wondered what peoples advice would be regards controlling them.
First the snails, they are spotted ramshorn snails, I...
Rather than starting a different topic I think my question is close enough to this one.
I am just at the point of planting/flooding my new 125L tank (ADA substrates too). I have received most of my plants now. Looking at the size of the 1-2-grow packs I might need to top up but I'll see how...
So I have reduced the lights on time by 30 mins and reduced the max intensity for the day to 70% - has been like that for a week. Seems stable. Still a very fine misting of GSA showing up on top leaves but nothing like before. I wonder whether I should now increase my dosing a little to see...
Plants are all growing well, no real signs of deficiencies but the GSA persists.
Just gave everything a heavy pruning and switched my Bicarb/Acid CO2 maker for a sodastream bottle and regulator in an effort to make the CO2 delivery more stable and reliable.
I have also just switched from the...
Usual 15L water change on Saturday for 1/3 Tapwater 2/3 RO - GH~6, KH~4. Hygrophila is still looking pale, a few of the top leaves seemed to have new algae growth. I trimmed a fair amount off the top again (it grows quickly).
I noticed some of the top growth on the lobelia seems a bit...
That looks great, but won't a lot of the plants growth die back as they transition to their aquatic state? Also I'd like to have some livestock within a month. I can see the appeal for the full aquascape but I'm going more for the fully planted jungle style fish-tank.
I'm double dosing iron at 0.2ppm, hope that's ok? I'm giving 0.1ppm via Flourish Comprehensive and 0.1ppm via Flourish Iron.
My dry salts came through today. Perhaps I should mix up some of the trace and start using that instead.
I found this webpage a while ago:
https://www.theshrimpfarm.com/articles/cycling-aquasoil-amazonia.php
When setting up a new aquarium with Aquasoil Amazonia you should follow these steps:
Add Substrate to the aquarium.
Fill the aquarium with water.
Activate filter.
Perform a 95-100% water...
Thanks, hunting down some old food packaging to cut up as a barrier. Then I suppose I should post a question about cycling the Amazonia substrate as I've read a few different things about it.
I see. So it won't be a problem having 3cm of sand? I only considered having the lava rock under there because I'd read that a thick layer of sand can become anaerobic.
Perhaps I should just edge off that layer at the back with some plastic sheet and fill with sand?]
[EDIT] Answered my own...
So I've been using my new regime since Saturday. Green spot algae hasn't disappeared but it no worse either which I guess is good. Certainly seeing some growth but things still looking a bit yellow. I suppose it's going to take more time to tell whether or not the new dosing scheme is working.
I intend to have the sand come just above the lava rock base layer you can see under the log at the back. It will be around 3cm deep which will come to about 1cm above the black surround at the bottom of the tank. IU expect the soil substrate to come to around the same level in the rest of the...
Hi all,
I'm just starting to lay the substrate in my new 125L tank. I am using JBL Volcano Mineral as a base layer to both build some height and I believe it also allows water movement under the main substrate to prevent the it from becoming anaerobic. I have some ADA Amazonia substrate which...
Ok, so my reading on that is so long as I keep my iron nute and others in a separate solution then I'll be ok? That's why I planned to dose Flourish Comprehensive and Macro mix on alternate days, which I believe is the EI way of doing things? So I'm kind of looking at a dosage level a little...
Interesting, I also came to the same conclusion regards Phosphate deficiency and the purple hue, I suppose Nitrogen deficiency could be an uptake issue due to low iron, potassium or magnesium levels. That or the plants have use all available nitrogen from the tap water. I will do a drop test...
Ah, so I don't believe it's new leaves that were losing their colour but old leaves on a 'new' plant. By new I meant that I added it within the past 2-3 weeks whereas most of the others have been in the tank since I brought it back at the beginning of November. I also added a small 'Rotala...
Ok so iron and phosphate separate, noted.
No real change so far. I could have said that perhaps there was a slight visible improvement today but I think that would be wishful thinking, I suppose it may take a while to see any difference. I measured the TDS around midday to see whether it had...
Clearly I am lacking in nutrients, it seems that even using conservative target ppm figures, the bi-weekly doses I have been using are very low. The green patching has also started to appear on another plant in the tank - showing on the very top leaves. Also some yellowing/loss of colour...
Thanks, I have a small amount in the bathroom cupboard, will mix a solution and start dosing a little as well as upping all my other dosing. Nobody has actually confirmed that the numbers I posted before look sensible and that I am under dosing currently, but that seems logical to me...
The tap water I'm now cutting my RO with (after being advised to stop using Equilibrium and associated buffers) has around 20ppm of Nitrates. So using a 50/50 cut with RO that's giving me around 10ppm plus whatever is generated in the tank from fish waste etc, so I figure I don't need to add...
Based on previous advice earlier in this thread I switched from RO with Seachem Equilibrium and buffers to a 50/50 mix of RO and tap water. The only photos I've found elsewhere so far which look a lot like mine are here...
No ideas at all? Another water change on Saturday so I again had a go at rubbing this off of a leaf. It really doesn't seem like any type of algae based on the fact that I can't shift it at all. Surely it must be a lack of or excess of some nutrient? Could it be related to light spectrum or...
Still have this discolouration on the leaves (has spread a bit on the same plant). I don't think it's algae, when I did a water change over the weekend I tried to rub it off one of the leaves and it wouldn't budge, seems more like a problem within the leaf itself, more like it's decaying.
So, I changed out 10L for the 50:50 mix earlier. Also dosed ferts as usual; I don't want to change lots of things at once or I won't know what's having an effect.
Checked a few hours later, TDS down to around 700, PH was at 7.1 (this was an hour after CO2 shuts off). Pretty good so I'll stick...
Right so I just tested the 50:50 mix.
GH 9
KH 6.5-7
PH 7.8
Nitrate 10-20ppm
The colours on the test chart for nitrate for 10 and 20ppm look exactly the same to me, have attached a photo, what do you think?
If this nitrate level is truly not bad for the fish then I'm reasonably happy with the...
Hmm, so initially I'd read that the nitrate readings could be used to evaluate when a water change is required, and so long as nitrate levels are not rising and stay below 20ppm no significant water change is required. Of course other sources say do at least a 50% water change every week...
Hey Conor,
That's interesting I was expecting similarly lower figures for TDS once I started using RO water. I was shocked by the high readings once I dosed with the remineralising products. Would a target of 140 be a baseline to aim for before adding ferts? I'd like to get the 40L tank to a...
Wow so much more to learn and gain experience with. It's difficult because every source of information seems to advise differently - all I want is to have a pretty aquarium with some healthy plants and fish, not to become a chemist :arghh:
I will read the threads you linked to in detail; I did...
Thanks for your info Darrel.
My tap water (based on API GH/KH drop tests) is GH 18 and KH 12. I'd understood that if I wanted to get to my desired figures of around 6 dKH and 6-8dGH then I'd be looking at roughly a 50/50 RO water and tap water mix. These targets are the figures many places...
A bit of searching around and looking at various pictures makes me think this could be spot algae, possibly caused by a lack of phosphorus? I'm not sure why the algae eaters and amano shrimp wouldn't be eating it unless this is a type of algae they don't like.
Have ordered some Seachem...
Hi all,
I'm wondering whether anyone can advise what's up with one of my plants, I believe it's 'Lobelia Cardinalis'. Seems to be growing 'ok' but I'm seeing this dark patching/mottling on lower leaves. I don't think it's algae as I have two siamese algae eaters in the tank who are very...
Just thought I would say hello. I've been reading these forums for around a month and recently signed up so I can interact a bit and seek out advice specific to my goals.
A complete newbie, I brought our first Aquarium (40L Panorama) a couple of months ago, mainly as entertainment for one of...
