    Help! Brown Algae Returns?

Are you using the bucket method to do water changes? Once I moved over to using a pump and hosepipe with a 218L tank it was much easier to do much larger water changes, this has really sorted the algae out. I may be totally wrong, but I'd take a guess at 30% water change not being enough for a...

    Improving this old filter?

I don't have any ceramic rings at the moment, just grog in the bottom and foam in the top. So if I buy some Ehfisubstrat and some ceramic rings, I'll fill the bottom tray with ceramic rings to the point where I can still fit the foam in on top of it, then fill the top tray with Ehfisubstrat...

    Improving this old filter?

Thanks chaps. Lol Clive, alpha grog for alpha male - "a man's drink". Here's what the alpha grog looks like. Ed, point taken on the empty space, I'll leave as is. As I'm unlikely to use peat or any chemical filter media, would it be a good move to put some Ehfisubstrat under the foam in the...

    Improving this old filter?

Just wondering what I can do to this external filter in the way of improving biological filtration. Not sure this filter is really big enough for the 218L tank it's used on, but it's all I've got at the moment. Think it's rated at 1000 lph, also have a koralia 2 running when co2 comes on. In...

    Ebay Regulators

Yeah 3 is just a lump of plastic lol, so just leave it alone like I mentioned earlier. :) It certainly does look like the insulation on the mains wire isn't quite right where it inserts into the solenoid. Lee, if the insulation doesn't go right into the solenoid housing I'd send it back.
  6. T

    Ebay Regulators

Egmel, the outlet for the co2 is just above the needle valve adjustment, so there's nowhere to fasten the tubing onto number 3.

    Ebay Regulators

I don't see the point of getting that reg, it's gonna cost £67 with postage. The Wave ones in the link above are only £53.76 inc. delivery and several members here are using them including myself. As far as I know, no one's said a bad word about them yet.

    Ebay Regulators

Lee, number 2 is the needle valve adjustment, they are very sensative. The solenoid will be in the off position when there's no power going to it, so get a timer to plug it into and set the hours to send power to the solenoid when you want the co2 running. I'm not 100% sure what numbers 1 and 2...

    Ebay Regulators

I don't hear any noise from the solenoid. Not sure about the 1 bubble every 5 secs, I use way more than that.

    Ebay Regulators

Same shop and same reg as mine, no problems so far. A bonus is not losing £20 + in postage costs from far east if it goes wrong.

    Ebay Regulators

The wave regulators from firststop aquatics are excellent, I've had no problem with mine. Look back in this thread for a link.

    Ebay Regulators

If fitted as it comes, the wave regulator only adds approx 4cm to the total height on the FE that I use, because the output from FE is well below the height of the handles. In case you didn't know, the regulator nut that fastens to the FE is on the back of the dials and not the bottom. Don't...

    Dosing intervals?

Cheers LD. I dosed trace today, so it will be easy to slip straight into that regime. So going from Friday to Monday with a 50% water change in between isn't anything to concern me then? Also, is the rest day only to keep the dosing days the same, or is there a scientific reason behind it? If...

    Dosing intervals?

Was wondering what the thinking is behind the rest period in the various dosing intervals. Not suggesting the info I've already read isn't spot on or anything, just looking to understand it or learn more. :) In the past I've done this: Mon - dose Tue - rest Wed - dose Thurs - rest Fri - dose...

    Drop checker mod

$36.99! for a drop checker, crikey. My ebay one was £1.99 + £2.60 postage from Hong Kong.

    Drop checker mod

Sounds good. Just checked my tipex and it's gone all thick and horrible. Have to stick with the spoon for now, even if it isn't as neat. :P
  19. T

    Drop checker mod

Yep, had thought of that too, just wasn't sure that stuff was safe or not. How long does the tipex last before going mushy and degrading? Cheers

    Drop checker mod

Being a tight wad I didn't want to splash out on a JBL drop checker, when I'd already got a cheapo one, so thought there must be a way of putting a white background on one of these cheaper ebay drop checkers. I cut the end of a white plastic 5ml medicine spoon and wedged it at 45° behind the...

    Koralia 3, in a 4' tank?

    Koralia 3, in a 4' tank?

Thanks John - - - Aaron, In the above ferts dosing. "7.5g KH2PO4 in 250ml DI water, dosing 11ml 3 times a week" That equates to 1ppm I think? Shall I up that to 22ml for a while and see what happens?

    Koralia 3, in a 4' tank?

Cheers Aaron, It's the only thing left I can think of to try and knock the GDA on the head. CO2 is right, ferts are right (I think). Only got 2wpg lights when on full, but have turned that down from 3 tubes to 2 (now 1.4 wpg) because of GDA. Would a koralia 3 give me more chance of defeating...

    Koralia 3, in a 4' tank?

Hi Just wondering if a koralia 3 would be too much for a 4' (218l) planted tank. I recently bought a 1600l/h powerhead to use with water changing. I tried it out as a powerhead without the emptying hose attached and omg, it created an unbelievable disturbance in the tank. The koralia 3 is...

    Headache with water change system

Paul Sorry chap, thought I was going mad there for a minute after reading your last post. Entirely my fault, I made a boo-boo, should have typed 'external' instead of 'internal' in above post. The home made beer kicked in quite some time ago. :) Did a water change tonight with the new duel...

    Headache with water change system

Paul Sorry chap, I didn't understand that first sentence, I'm a simple soul. If you're using the external filter/pump to remove water from the tank, how is that gravity fed. :? I get confused easily. :)
  29. T

    Headache with water change system

Paul No probs, just jesting. I have an internal filter. Never occurred to me to use that for pumping the water out. I've got a 1600LH powerhead/pump I'm going to use for pumping water out of the tank. Nice looking set-up there. How come the filter has 3 pipes coming from it? And how rude of...

    Headache with water change system

Flyfisherman Thanks for showing concern over the amount of time I've wasted talking about this. :D No  I've been doing bucket method water changes on this 4' tank for over ten years, do you think I deserve a break from it yet? I had. I was just replying in a polite manner to...

    Headache with water change system

I'll be wanting to pump the old water out of the tank, so instead of a separate pipe for emptying, I should be able to attach one of the two filler hoses to the pump, cold would be safest if it's going through the pump. Then put a T piece on the cold pipe near the sink for an outlet. Practically...

    Headache with water change system

Yum, boiled fish! :) These Fortic cylinders really suck. There's probably a limescale issue restricting the flow even more.
  34. T

    Headache with water change system

I'm glad you said that, it's something I'd thought of, but was a bit unsure of. The reason I think the cold is causing the problem is because of the close proximity of the Y piece to the source of hot and cold taps. Cheers
  35. T

    Headache with water change system

Thanks LD,I'm sure that would work, just more expense and fiddling about. Also not sure I'd fit it in before the Y connector and still keep the rest of the connections inside the sink. The two hose option is looking more attractive by the minute, especially as I've got loads of hose lying...
  36. T

    Headache with water change system

Cheers LD. Do you know how they work? I'm sure that would stop the cold going up the hot pipe, but would the pressure of the mains cold water simply block the flow of the hot as it backs-up to the outlet of the non return valve?
  37. T

    Headache with water change system

Hi Paul The first link is a T piece. The second link is for a Stop End connector. I've taken these apart in the past, so I know how they work. I don't think that will solve the problem. Yes they work as a one way flow device for hoses, but for it to close the rubber seal to stop the cold going...

    Headache with water change system

Bought a Y connector and a couple of square tap connectors to fit the kitchen sink taps, hoping to save on carting buckets of water around. After connecting it all up, I've found that the gravity/pressure from the hot water isn't sufficient and the cold water goes up the hot water pipe into the...

Looking for neutral colour T8 tubes

Cheers for all the info. So if our brains can filter out all the blue from high noon so the grass still looks perfectly green, then why can't it filter out the pink from my tubes so I can see the greens.:) Don't feel like you have to answer that. ;) I went and bought an Aquawhite tube today. So...

Looking for neutral colour T8 tubes

I hadn't spotted the 840 tube was the same as in the cheap tubes thread. They don't look hideous on their own and they look fine mixed with the 880 Skywhite, but they'll make my situation worse, so I don't think I want to go there. ;) So is the stated colour rendition index of a tube just an...

Looking for neutral colour T8 tubes

Looking for neutral colour T8 tubes

Gosh, all that for little old me! Much appreciated and very interesting reading, cheers. That's the problem, I can't find daylight bulbs in the size I need. Also, as far as high K rating, the ones I've got are rated at 10,000K and they're pink. I'm afraid I don't really understand the K bit in...

Looking for neutral colour T8 tubes

Ok then, if neutral is too vague, how about natural light? I'm sure you must know what I'm getting at. Light that make the plants look the same colour as they do during daylight. Not flushed artificially pink, red, yellow, orange, blue, or any other colour that they don't exhibit under normal...

Looking for neutral colour T8 tubes

Cheers GF, read that several times before. Problem is I can't find any of the neutral coloured tubes suitable for planted tank in the size I'm after (3.5 foot T8). So if anyone knows of any that aren't pink, yellow or red, feel free to recommend them.
  45. T

Looking for neutral colour T8 tubes

Looking for a bit of advice on T8 tubes. Ideally tubes that don't look pink, red or yellow. I was going to buy some uber-cheap standard 3.5 foot tubes from lampspecs, but during a discussion on TFF I was advised against it, I think the reasoning was that they'd be pink or something to do with...

Fire extinguisher setup, is this lot ok?

My fault for not properly explaining what I was thinking, too much beer last night. I was just thinking about if the solenoid developed a fault. Then it could be removed and the reg still usable. I definitely intend to use though, it as it saves on gas and it's supposedly better for fish not...

Fire extinguisher setup, is this lot ok?

That's good to know. I haven't seen any of these regulators in the flesh as it were, but all the ebay regs look like the solenoid is attached and part of the main on/off tap, or whatever it's called. With the wave reg it looks like the solenoid is inline and could easily be removed, then just...

Fire extinguisher setup, is this lot ok?

And just for good measure. Clicky There's quite a few threads with links to ebay regs, but when the sellers update the links, the original links posted on here become invalid. Thought I'd edit above posts with photos, then if anyone makes comments on individual regs in the future, we'll know...

Fire extinguisher setup, is this lot ok?

So is it easy to remove the bubble counter from those aquaticmagic regs and attach a pipe straight to the needle valve? Not sure I'm that bothered about a bubble counter, particularly if they leak. Another thing I was wondering is if the aquarianerversand regs and solenoid are simple to connect...
