    South America Riparium

I think the difference is that a Riparium just has plants above the waterline, whereas a Paludarium has a bit of land, for amphibious creatures... I might be wrong though! Great tank hydrophyte!

    Rotala Rotundifolia not growing

Hi Ed, Thanks for the advice. I should have mentioned that I also have a drop-checker (with 4dKH) which shows lime-green during the photo period pretty much all the time. I have a Tetratec EX700 on the left hand side, the original Juwel filter on the right hand side, and a Hydor Koralia 1...

    Supperglue plants to wood.

I stapled mine in my last tank as well - that seemed to work well too!

    Rotala Rotundifolia not growing

Hi Everyone, I recently had a complete re-scape of what was going on in my Rio 180. Basically, I had no luck whatsoever with glosso/HC, and the tank itself was looking quite sparse with no enough hardscape for my tastes. So I bought a lot of plants, slightly more tolerant species than I had...

    Fire Ex help.

Yeah, take it to the tip - I live in Barnet and they said the tip in North Finchley should be OK. I would imagine that most Local Authorities have similar facilities.

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

Also, bad form to double-post I know! But I was also wondering - I am currently in remission after a bad case of spend-itis, and as such I can't really afford the 60-odd quid for an extra T5 starter unit to add more light. However, I am still running the Juwel stock tubes, would it be worth it...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

Hi Steve, Yes - I am using Juwel reflectors (have been since the tank was setup) - they certainly seem to increase the amount of light, and I have the front one pointed towards the majority of the Glosso. If this was the case though, I'd expect to see some of the glosso doing OK, wouldn't I...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

OK - after trimming and re-planting numerous times, I am getting frustrated with my Glosso! It refuses to carpet, it's like it has noticed the rotala next to it and has got a height complex! No matter how many times I trim and re-plant the cuttings, it refuses to spread sideways - it always...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

Hi everyone. I have fish in the tank now, and everything is going OK, but I am having some issues with the glosso. Basically, it grows up - the longest shoot up is about 7cm or so! I am still using the stock lighting (90w over 40 gallons, so roughly just over 2wpg with reflectors), and can't...

Show me your tidy cabinet! (Now piccies of my tidy cabinet!

Wow, some of you have really tidy cabinets! My new Rio 180 cabinet is a mess... Even the plugs are outside the cabinet right now. I do keep meaning to sort it out, but life keeps getting in my way! Once I manage it, I'll post a pic...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

I've bought some more plants to try and make the planting a bit more dense now. Just waiting for them to be delivered to work, so hopefully it won't happen on Saturday. Blyxa is still melting, sigh. Bits of it all over the place!

How long does it take for...

I attached an anubia plant (which one, embarassingly, I don't know...) to a porous rock and then dismantled the tank about 2 months later. When I took the anubia out it had secured itself pretty well to the rock, and I had to pull at it quite a lot to get it to let go. From my experience, (and...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

Ok! That's a little encouraging, I guess ill just leave it. I have been really pumping the co2 in (may as well with no fish) so I can't see it being a carbon deficiency, unless easycarbo adds something more than co2 injection?

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

So this is what it looks like a few days in: But the Blyxa really is melting horribly: The glosso is growing, without doubt, but some is growing up and some is growing across. Any suggestions for the Blyxa? Is there any chance it will grow back or is it a goner?

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

Awesome, thanks. I had read elsewhere that it doesn't like being fiddled with, so I had decided to leave it be.

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

The Blyxa appears to be melting quite a lot now as well, the Zenkeri has stopped for the moment, touch wood. I read elsewhere that Blyxa often melts following introduction to a new environment - so I will wait for a few weeks to see whether it eventually stops. I have re-adjusted the Koralia so...

Thanks for the explanation, ceg! I have a solenoid attached to my reg, and I was keen to use it due to it making a 2kg FE last longer than it would otherwise. So once the fish go in (they're being transplanted from my other tanks so it won't bee too long) I'll try and keep the solenoid on a...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

OK, thanks ceg. I will up the CO2 during daylight hours. Am I right in saying that it is unecessary to inject CO2 whilst the lights are off, because the plants won't use it? I know most seem to turn theirs on a couple of hours before lights on, presumably to make sure that when the lights do...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

My zenkeri is melting! Meeeeelting! No, seriously, the stems of the zenkeri seem to be kind of disintegrating? It's only been in there 48 hours, but I'm dosing 8ml off TPN+ every morning, and the co2 is going in at 3bps, for 8 hours, lights on 5 hours per day in the evening. Is it just...

    First Ever New Tank

Not everyone agrees with it's recommendations, but when I was researching the same question (although with a Rekord 70), I found the ThinkFish community creator good: http://www.thinkfish.co.uk/community.html It gives you a guide on how much you can stock, and how big fish will become, as well...

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

Thanks TDI. I have managed to get the Blyxa to stay put for the moment, but I didn't cut it down - should I uproot some of it and cut it down or would it be best to leave it as it is now? It's the height it was when it came from the shop, about 5-10cm.

    Matt's Rio 180 Journal

OK - finally got over my fear of becoming a gas-fuelled missile, and fired my FE. What a lot of fuss about nothing eh! Short pfft, then that was it! Now the FE is sitting there happily, churning CO2 into the aquarium. The blyxa seems pretty unwilling to stay in the ground though. It just keeps...

Thanks Dave. My flickr account has been cruelly neglected over the last couple of years - I just haven't done much photography to be honest. I'm keen to start taking more photos though - hopefully I'll have a lot more to upload over the course of the summer. Got some fun trips coming up too, so...

Thanks Joe! And..er...yeah, in all the excitement forgot to take the sticker off! Had previously left it on because didn't want to remove it until it had water in it and I was sure there were no leaks! Thanks Dave, yeah the glosso took a long time to sort out, and it was a bit soul-destroying...

Hi All, So finally I have all the bits for my tank, and it actually has water in it! Apologies for the poor pictures, turns out the camera on the G1 is as bad as that on the iPhone! Equipment: Tank: Juwel Rio 180 Filtration: Juwel Internal + Tetratec EX700 Substrate: Caribsea Eco-Complete...

    Advice on a camera...

I have a 350D and it's great. Unfortunately over the last year or so I haven't had the time to do as much photography as I'd like to. I only have the kit lens as well, keep meaning to save some cash for another lens but haven't managed it really (certainly won't now I have just bought a new...

    CO2 for Rio 180

Well, finally took the plunge and ordered all the bits over the last few days. 2 2kg FE's (Thanks Dan!) Regulator in my first post. CO2 Airline, Rhinox 2000 diffuser, bubble counter from Aqua Essentials. Also have got a non-return valve. All exciting, but will be even more exciting when the...

    CO2 for Rio 180

OK, added a reply there as well. Just a bit wary of getting pressurized gas delivered to my workplace... I'm planning to be home on the day the tank itself gets delivered though... That will probably be next week... We'll see if I can't get something sorted out. With regards to the...

    CO2 for Rio 180

Well, the FE solution will roughly work out at 90 quid, all in, whereas the LunaPet one will be about 140 quid. This is, of course, assuming that the FE on eBay goes for 15 quid with no bidding war. Plus, for the FE solution I get 2kg of CO2 and in the Lunapet one I get 500g. So it looks like...

    CO2 for Rio 180

Hi All, I am new here, so forgive me if these are silly questions! We currently have a Rekord 70, and a BiOrb 60, both community aquariums. We have decided to combine the two lots of fish into one tank, and have decided on the Juwel Rio 180, which will have plenty of volume for our existing...
