I regret to inform any readers of my journal that this scape has effectively come to an end...
As of this weekend my girlfriend and I have parted ways and as I was living with her and effectively have no wear to go, I am unable to take this tank with me. Hopefully this will not be the end of my...
Re: 120 x 55 x 55 Some new fish. extra pics added.
Beautiful fish there Mark! I would imagine in a tank of this size the shark will have plenty of space to stake it's claim, and with it as a threat should keep the shoal nice and tight. ;)
When dosing EI it is usual to change 50% of your water on a water change day. I'm not sure how the all-in-one type of ferts work tho... So it may not need to be as much. That being said I have always changed at least 50% when I have done any of my water changes.
Lol, yus I remembered that there was a thread about it a while back. Best not to clutter your Journal with talk of LED. I like the institute shot, it's always nice to see ppls tanks in their proper context.
Do you have a fan in the luminaire too? or do you just have some form of heat sink? or both? Also do you have the LEDs open or do you have something that screens/protects from moister/splashing?
Yep, that's the way I understand it too. Also bearing in mind that any "inline" applicants will affect the overall flow of your filters too.
Is everyone that's commented working with the 10x flow guideline?
I didn't really find the "healing issue" that interesting... I won't be subscribing, but like I said in the previous post I don't really get on with magazines...
As Alastair said earliest Seachem's Excel is only a liquid form of carbon and doesn't contain any ferts like N, P or K which you will find in things like TPN or some other plant food. So I would carry on with whichever liquid carbon you are using but also pick up an all-in-one fertiliser, like...
I agree, your listed plants have low demands and are the ones that are recommended for low light/low tech tanks. Follow Darrell's advice, he wont steer you wrong.
I still think the deficiency is due to to much light. Mainly cos they need more ferts due to the amount of light and...
Yep, I can see your picture.
I think the root (no pun intended) of your problem is the duration of your light. I would recommend turning your lights down to between 5-7 hrs.
The more light you have the greater the plants will demand Co2 and nutrients. So if you reduce the amount of time your...
Such a good post it was worth posting twice!
11 hours of light is a lot by any standard...Using 2xT5 for that length of time you should defo be pumping Co2 in pressurised and EI dosing.
To post pictures u need to upload them to a hosting site eg Photobucket and use the [IMG] tags around the URL.
I agree with Westyggx and Tom, as you don't have a nutrient rich substrate you'll need to dose the water column with fertilisers so that plants can get what they need from there. Also as suggested root tabs will help and they wont be as much hassle as a substrate exchange.
I would have thought...
I think now is a "funny" time for most businesses, let alone the fish one. Money is tight all over...
I only ever buy my plants from TGM or online as my LFS are not plant focused.
Re: 120 x 55 x 55 'Ruby' Gravel vacs and all things nice
Looking really really nice.
I personally prefer Red Phantoms to Serpaes. They look very similar just not as... bitie!
Could we see a vid of the filters in full flow and plant movement?
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - More pictures and fish
Still battling with some pesky algae, but its not too unsightly.
More fishies added, I now have a total of 20 Rummy Nose Tetras, 2 SAEs and so far... 1 Otocinclus! Last one in the shop.
I'm thinking that I could do with...
I have been trimming mine in the "regular" way and the plants are still sending out lots of runners. I will try and get a shot of it currently (tho... I've been trying to get that shot all week! but I keep forgetting...) to show the differences in growth whilst trimming.
Re: fx5 outlets
Humm... I don't really have any other outlets to try... I'd have to make my own lilly pipe. How have you get your outlets configured now? Will their alignment conflict with each other?
I read that Pogo Erectus has some... special demands, namely increased iron requirements. Could a deficiency in that area make the plant more susceptible to this?
Re: fx5 outlets
I'll be interested to see what happens with your change Alistair. I'm finding the flow from the 405's spray bar very powerful and I'm not sure that the fish are feeling it. The shrimp I had in were getting blown all over the shop... Possibly why they didn't survive...
I was told that there is no problem having Amano's with those breeds of shimp. I would have thought your existing shrimp would be able to help with any algae problems tho?
I believe that you are able to use it instead, but you need to work out the exact molecular weight so you know how much more/less you need to add. I think there is a different amount of the required for MgSO4.7H20. Clive will be able to explain it all better.
I think there are, but I must admit I'm not sure what they are. Melting leaves and legginess is related to Co2 difficiencies? Yellowing of the leaves is another sign, but cant remember is it's potasium or nitrogeon... Clive will be able to tell you tho.
The EI guide as I understand it is just that a guide. As you've found with u're Co2 you have to be willing to alter it as is needed. As Clive himself advises light drives plant growth, so the more light you have the faster the plants will grow and the more Co2 and ferts they will need to meet...
I remember seeing them in "Bones of the Earth" at TGM and they did look quite large. Do they need to be kept in specific numbers? eg 6+ or are they only riding solo?
Bat'leth to the neck!!!
Don't forget that if you increase your light levels (which I read earlier on that you intend to do) you will also need to increase you Co2 level and also your concentration of your added ferts.
Thanks Westyggx! Took an age of tweeking to get it to how I liked it, as you will see if you read from the start! ;)
I've now added a total of 12 Rummy Nosed Tetras and they seem to be very happy. They seem to be running sentry across the front of pane of glass whilst the lights are on and they...
I have a Eheim 2078 Pro3e and I initially had it setup the why you have it, but probably not as full. I wasn't happy with the flow so decided to empty 2 of the trays, leaving the Mech at the bottom, then an empty basket, then a basket of Substrat pro, and then the final empty basket. I must say...
After reading one of George F's PFK articles (10 planted tank myths) myth #6, I've twisted one of my spray bars so that it causes ripples on the surface so that it drives off excess gas once the Co2 goes off. I previously had very little surface movement and the DC hardly changed colour after...
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had any experience in altering the working pressure on AquaMedic regulators (namely the ones that TGM sells)? I have one of these and understand that their working pressure is 1.5bar and I'm looking to use it on a UP Atomiser, which I believe need a pressure...
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
Yeah, the Rummys were schoaling near the bottom. The flow from the spray bars seems to be quite fast around the tank and they don't seem to be much chance to rests...
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
After a successful introduction of a "test platy" I decided to take a trip down to my LFS! and came home the proud own of 5 Rummy Nosed Tetras and 5 "algae shrimp". The shrimp looked a bit like Pinocchio shrimp, but I don't think their...
Found the picture of the twin needle valve that Viktor sells at his shop!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/viktorlantos/5550299201
I sent him a PM about it, but don't think I ever got a reply. Not sure if they are available in the UK, or if Viktor is willing to ship them here (for a reasonable price).
I saw a picture of one on Viktor's flickr page and sent him a PM but didn't get a reply... I must admit I don't know where they are available from...
EDIT - The only thing I can fine quickly is a single needle valve @ Aqua Essentials. You could use a Y piece and then two needle valves to...
Yours is a glowing advertisement for DSM! and it looks really nice.
I would suggest moving your drop check so that it's not directly above the Co2 diffuser.
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
I have a drop check, but again they are not the most actuate way of finding out the amount of dissolved Co2...
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
I'm not sure how you can guarantee that you are at 30ppm... I have lowered my bubble rate but not sure that it's low enough to have happy, non-dead fish.
I'm familiar with the acclimation process, just not with a Co2 equipped tank.
I...
Re: How can i plit co2 for 2 tanks??
You'll need a splitter with two needle valves on so that you can control the two independent flows of gas. You may also need to alter the pressure out of the reg so that you have enough pressure at the difusser.
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
Ok. Need some advise on "best practise" when introducing fauna to Co2 enriched tank that has been running with a fish free start (i.e. extremely high Co2).
Is it best to turn the Co2 right down and also low the light time, ruffle the...
As I understand the "best practise" for water changes, you should change the water b4 or after your photoperiod (and b4 or after your Co2 comes on or goes off). This way you don't impact the usual timings of gas on, lights on, plant growth. In this instance I dose my macro ferts straight after...
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
It'll be fine for the fauna, and awesome for all the algae I'll get too. ;)
But I guess I'd need something for the Otto and shrimp to eat.
I'll check out Abyss, but been to any of the Stockport fish shops yet!
Man up ya tart! ;) :P
Jame's Algae Guide is good to pinpoint the exact algae, but must admit the advice seems more for high tech setups... I am assuming it's GSA. And it's rude to kick a man in the Otto's whilest he's suffering from the algaes!
Apparently Ottos do not eat GSA but...
Without seeing you current configuration I can only guess that you have the spray bar coming into the tank from the left and the pump in that same corner? I believe that you get slightly better flow from the start of the spray bar than the far end. So I would assume that it would be best to put...
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
Kewl, I think I'll throw in another couple of test fish at the weekend, not Ottos tho. If they fair ok I will see if I can find somewhere that's selling Amanos!
Yeah my Assassin Snail did more ambushing than chasing across tanks. They would move out and attack any passing morsel tho. Pretty horrific way to go too!
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
Are Amano and Red Cherry shrimp ok to keep in the same tank? There wont be any unsightly inter-breeding or Spock vs Kirk style duels will there?
A little big if GSA will probably lend to a more natural looking tank so I don't think it's anything to worry about. Just keep an eye on it.
Your tank is looking nicer and nice with each update. All you need to do is finish that damn spray bar! It'll be interesting to see the effect the change...
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
So while I'm dialling down the gas thoughts are turning to fauna.
Initial choices are :-
Otto's
Rummy Nose Tetra
Amano shrimp
Red Cherry shrimp
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
Lol, it's no trouble Darrel. Otto's are my favourite fishies too, and if I'd known they were so sensitive to Co2 and react so badly I wouldn't have used them... It was mainly cos they were in there originally (pre-re-scape) and that they...
Re: 120 x 55 x 55 'Ruby' Tank and cabinet arrive!
Yeee gods man! What a monster! It's f'ing mahoooosive!
What filtration will you be running on it and how will you ensure they Co2 gets all the way to the bottom of the beast? :jawdrop
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
Lol, obviously! The gas was only that high because I had no fauna, but as I have already had some algae creeping in with the Co2 almost on full blast... I'm a little concerned about what will happen when I start to turn it down...
I...
A Ha'tak mothership then? I'm growing Tennellus atm and it is always sending out runners. I am trimming it at every water change (weekly) to keep it to the length that I want.
I'm sure that The CEG will come over and recommend a Negh'Var-class cruiser reactor powered luminaire that you can nuke your tank with. ;)
I have no experience with LB, so can't really comment. I can say that I have been lead to believe from our peers that we should be able to grow...
The main problem that you face with corner tanks is getting the flow right, so that it carries your Co2 and fert (if used) all around the tank. I know that it can be achieved as I've seen some lovely scapes in these type of tank but it is more challenging than the standard shape. High tech tanks...
Re: Bobtastic's Iwagumi Scape - Finally planted page 10
So I tried three Ottos from my other tank in here and they last no more than 5 mins b4 one was floating around the top and the other two were motionless on the bottom... They made no attempt to evade the net when I went in for the rescue...
Have you thought about using some acrylic tubes bent into which ever shape you like (spray bar or inlet) so that you can make the hosing as inconspicuous as possible?
