    Switching to Low-tech

I never knew measuring spoons would bring UKAPS to life. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will hit the high street and see what I can bag for a few quid. I will report back with photos ;-)

    Switching to Low-tech

My plants from java arrived yesterday and after a quick rinse I've added them to the tank. I expect the Crypt will melt back as per usual, but at least they look like strong plants. The pots of Java Fern sit nicely on the substrate, but the Cera will need some Slate tying to it to keep it...

    Switching to Low-tech

What do I do about the 'gunk' that gathers at the bottom of the tank? It would normally get hoovered away during a water change. Do I leave it, or is there a way to remove it without disrupting the balance of a low tech tank.

    Switching to Low-tech

My dry ferts and seachem Eq. arrived today. Just got some small pots to start off with (100g i think) Plus i've put in an order for more plants from Java-plants. I should be getting 5 Potted Ceratopteris, 3 Potted Java Ferns and 5 Crypt. Balansae. I'll keep my eye out for some pygmy chain...

    Switching to Low-tech

This is where the Latin plant names come back to haunt me, because i had an Indian Fern as part of my initial plant bundle about a year ago. My care (as i remember) was not in keeping with its requrements! As you said i need to increase my plant mass so if you have some spare that would be...

    Switching to Low-tech

Hi Darrel, Firstly thanks for the interesting reading. I completely take on board what you've said about plant mass, its clearly the element of the low-tech sceme that i have overlooked. In its current state i suppose i am on countdown to some aglae problems. The Ceratopteris has (until now)...

    Switching to Low-tech

I'll keep an eye out for one at a good price. Right here is a photo of the current scape. I am hoping the Anubias Barteri at the back will grow tall again and create the background with the Amazon Swords and Vallis (small at the mo) on the right. Front left-to-right is Java Fern, Anubias nana...

    Switching to Low-tech

Hmm, yeah i can see why there aren't many low-tech journals now! I have placed my order for Seachem Equillibrium (from ebay) and KNO3, KH2PO4 from FluidSensorOnline Because my tank will rely on constant and regular fish feeding, i think i am going to buy an auto-feeder. 15 minutes research...

    Switching to Low-tech

Thanks everyone for letting me know their experience/suggestions. I am hoping to re-scape tonight and then I'll share a photo of how it looks. I am going to split quite a few of my anubias so they cover a larger area. Reposition all of the wood and move the vallis to the back of the tank. I...

    Switching to Low-tech

I've just dived back on here before heading off to bed. (Politics has kept me busy tonight) I'll read the article on the way to work tomorrow (thanks for posting some specific help) and i'll keep the extra points you have made in mind. I will also try and get a picture of the setup on here (i...

    Switching to Low-tech

I am trying to move my tank onto a lower tech setup (not that it's high tech now) I have been dosing EasyCarbo until now and i just don't get the chance to keep up the routine, so i am trying to switch to a no CO2 setup. Rio 180 1.2 wpg TetraTec Ex700 Pool filter sand substrate (with...

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

A couple of pictures of how it looks after all the plants arrived. Plus a random one of a Cherry Shrimp!

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

lol  does that mean i missed out on a discount. I got a very good price for the plants and its great to know you've had a good experience with exactly the same variety. I can't wait to see them thrive. In my fairly low tech tank, how long before they reach the surface? 3/4 months about right?

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

Thanks, Jungle-style is what i am after. But i intially bought a "plant bundle" which included plants i didn't like or didn't fit well with the rest of the tank. So i am aiming for a predominantly crypt based jungle style (if there is such a thing!) as it seems to suit my slightly lower-tech...

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

Thanks, i wanted to make sure they went in the right spot straight away as i've read about the problems with moving crypts. I have a location in mind at the background/left-hand side of my tank (in front of the out pipe). But what do you think about spacing, i've had to replant Vallis and Ech...

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

Thats who i have bought from too (wasn't sure if i could mention it  - so many sites, so many rules) If they are rhizomes, what sort of spacing would you give them? about 2-3cm or more? Also will these produce runners (like my ech does) or do they produce shoots from the rhizome (more...

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

I have bought 15 Crypt Balansae from Malaysia Company and i just wanted to know if anyone has any advice for any care before i add them to the tank? I am expecting the usual "melt" and re-growth but just wanted to know any hints/tips for a sucessful transfer. Thanks.

    "Serenity Peak" Mark's 60cm Iwagumi

Re: "Serenity Peak" Mark's 60cm Iwagumi (Fish pics 22/10/09) I was expecting Green Neon to be ... well green i guess. Is this just not showing up on the pictures or are my expectation of lime coloured fish a few yards wide of the mark?

    tpn+

I'm pretty sure it was London Dragon who recommended my EC dose when my plants were suffering a few months back. so i knew the numbers would be 100% bonafide! TBH it was more the Profito and TPN+ dosing i was unsure about. But having done some intensive research on EI Fert dosing (thanks to...

    tpn+

http://www.easylife.nl/english/index.html?id=43 I'm sure my dosing is fine. Especially as some members around here recommended the dosage  I've re-read about my ferts here and on TFF and i'm happy with what i am dosing. When my stock is cleared i think i'll head down the EI route.

    tpn+

I dose TPN+ in my Rio 180, @ 17.5ml per week. I also add 5.4ml Easy Carbo and 2.5ml Profito. I'm by no means heavily planted. Am i adding too much fert? I don't see unwanted algae growth, but that may be because of my Oto/Shrimp clean up crew.

    substrat and corydoras

I've got pool filter sand in my tank and the colour and texture are great visually. I also have 2 corys who seem to enjoy it. If you're going planted you could put the sand over a more fertilie substrate to get the best of both for your Corys. But then you get the debate of will it mix up... i...

    plastic mesh for moss wall??

My advice from experience is, because i wanted something that looked like a moss wall right from the start, not to use the sandwich method. Instead i used a very firm and rigid plastic base (i got white and regretted it straight away - if you can find brown or green then all the better) I...

    No Mans land

Which MA did you get the rams from? and were they Czech bred? I was chatting to one of the staff @ Syon Park MA about rams a few weeks ago. Do they "need" a cave/nesting area? (lol i think i'll leave all the Questions there! ) Looking forward to the pics.

Re: Let the journal begin! I think you've got the hardscape well laid out, it'll be interest to see how the lights+plants enhance the look. I've had this style of tank on my "wish list" for a while. Maybe the boss will let me have more space so i can get another tank! You can add me...

Re: Jewel Rio 180 Maiden Planted tank I am happy that the growth is steady, but nothing more than that. It is a great place for the baby shrimps to hide in, but i want to move it under the spray bar on the back wall, we sit directly in front of the tank and the wall looks naff form the side...

    how to tie moss...

I will keep my eyes peeled for some Taiwan moss in the future. I have just bought a bulk load of Xmas and should have the backing mesh this weekend. how to tie moss...

I have just bought THIS MESH from eBay and i am hoping to grow a moss wall. I want to plant it for one side of the tank to begin with, so i am going to cut it to a smidge under the height of the tank, but double the length (so it will fold over on itself). Then i am going to silicon suction...

What is the difference between these ferts?

    1. Is there any manjor difference between these ferts? TPN+ Sera Florena Easy-Life Profito 2. Would you ever use all 3? a combo? or just one? 3. Do you over-dose your ferts? If people wouldn't mind throwing down some quick answers/opinions it would be really helpful for me. :)
