My new CO2 system - what a bargain.

At the weekend I won an ebay bargain and it was delivered today. It's a JBL Proflora u403. http://www.hobbyfish.net/index.php?prod ... 4162018038 It cost me all of £62 as it was listed as a faulty return but as new, however, I can find nothing wrong with it. :shh: :D :thumbup...

Bottles for Hydor NRG system - any cheap option?

I was given it for nothing so no loss. I'll use yeast until the new year when I can afford to get a welding CO2 system sorted.

    Dying Vallisneria Spiralis

Easylife website - "EasyCarbo is a very powerful and effective source for aquarium plants. A strong grwoth [sic] improvement is noticable after 1 to 2 weeks. Usable with or without CO2 addition." Nowhere does it say that it may be harmful to some species of plant. It only tells you not to...

Bottles for Hydor NRG system - any cheap option?

I have the Hydor NRG CO2 system (the one without the gauges) and was wondering whether there was a cheap option or an adapter for the CO2 bottles. I'll be using it in a 320l tank so the small bottles aren't financially viable.

Well,I've been doing some searching on here. What a waste of £15 of plants and about a £5 worth of Easycarbo! Email going to them today.

    Dying Vallisneria Spiralis

I planted 25 plants each about 10" long into Caribsea Planted Aquarium. Dosing with TPN+ ans Easycarbo. Planted them on last Wednesday and they have collapsed and are starting to turn to mush. Any ideas?

Best moss for a moss wall?

I was searching but there were loads of mixed opinions. :? Just had a look at those you recommend, nice. :P Wow, that would be brilliant, thanks very much. I've PM'd you.

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

Egmel, sounds like you and I have the same way of thinking. It's also good to see someone else has been through it so I don't have to. Looks like a combination of (maybe) sand (for non planted parts) and some clay baseed substrate for planted parts. Cheers

Can you dose CO2 into a filter for ultimate absorbtion?

Thanks for the heads up. Seeing as CO2 has no detrimental effect on bacterial colonies, shall I dose BOTH external filters then so that I get CO2 rich water flowing over both sides of the tank?
  13. A

Can you dose CO2 into a filter for ultimate absorbtion?

I'll be running two external filters in my new setup, a Fluval 405 and a 205. I was wondering wether it would be good to diffuse CO2 into the inlet of the 205 (my secondary filter) to try and get 100% absorbtion of the CO2. The affect on the cultures in the filter doesn't bother me as I'll...

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

Thanks all for your advice, there's loads for me to think about now. I'd rather use a clay based substrate as it'll give me more margin for error as you say, I would consider topping with a more innert substrate though for cosmetic reasons, although I'd rather not have a substrate...

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

Cheers for the informed reply George, it is very helpful. Please bear with me. What is EI? What is CEC? The cheapest I've found Tropica AquaCare Plant Substrate in 5kg is around £20 (inc. p&P), how would this compare to using something like Eco Complete at £20 for 9kg? Is one better than...

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

Thanks. I did, look at my first post. I'll be feed nutrients (TPN+) to supplement this. My current tank is a basic planted affair just into gravel but with CO2. Some plants do well, others not too well. I wanted to move away from basic substrates because (I thought)...

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

Please bear with me as I am new to this, hence why I'm asking. I'd like something a bit better than sand, so somewhere between sand and AS in effectiveness and price will suit me. Are any of these suitable? http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/catalogue/freshwater-planted-substrate.asp
  19. A

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

I'm sure it's very cheap. I thought that for a successful planted aquarium you require a substrate with some sort of nutrients for plants.

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

Surely that isn't a suitable planted tank substrate? I was thinking more along the lines of a cheaper AS equivalent.

What is the best substrate when on a budget?

I need some suitable substrate for my 4' Osaka 320. I want a planted biotope tank so I need a decent substrate but can't afford AS or anything else in that price range. Are there any other options which are more affordable and will still be good for a planted setup? The tank will have CO2 and...

Advice wanted for an Australian biotope (on a budget) please

Advice wanted for an Australian biotope (on a budget) please

Looks like we posted together, woops. I'd love to use Aquasoil as I've found it easy to use so far. The trouble is that I will be covering an area of 4ftx2ft with the substrate and it should be about 4 inches deep I think. That would probably be about £120 of aqua soil.

I'm picking up my Osaka 320 tomorrow and I'm looking to set it up over the next couple of weeks. I want a planted biotope (Australian biotope) but don't know how best to go about it. For those who've never seen one, this is an Osaka 320. Spec on the system will be: 320l fluval 405 fluval 205...

    Fishless cycle question

It wouldn't do any harm in fishlessly cycling the tank before you put the substrate in. The majority of nitrifying bacteria live in the filter media so if the tank (and filter) are fully cycled you won't have any issues. Well done for going down the fishless cycle route. :clap...

Ok, day 2. Just added some taller plants, I think they are Eleocharis acicularis, can anyone be more accurate? Shrimp went in too, not sure on species but not Amano as they have been breeding readily.

Forgot to mention, I need to buy another Eleocharis parvula to fill the upper right area. I see what you mean by broken bridge, nice idea. It actually looks a little different with real perspective and the rocks look loads better in real life. I'm going to go with the grass and see how that...

Advice on plants for non CO2 invert tank

Ok, so no to HC. It will be low tech (compared to my biotopes). Trickle filter, low light, no CO2 and some Aqua Soil. WIth 1 type of plant and one type of mass/wort and 1 rock. Very infrequent water changes. So, does anyone have a suggestion for a carpet plant then?

Advice on plants for non CO2 invert tank

No CO2 injection at all, but will use easy carbo. I'd be happy using Aqua Soil Malaya and it , as you should, give a bigger margin for error. Does anyone have any suggestions for a carpet plant? What moss/wort will do well on slate?
