Shot of the algae I am suffering from at the moment.
I thought it was green spot algae, but all the descriptionsI have read about that says it grows on plant leaves and glass. This is 99% on the sand and a tiny amount on the glass right at the bottom. Any ideas?
Also I got home from work...
Well tank has been running a fair few weeks now. TPN+ seems to have helped the plants a bit the swords are doing much better now.
I have had two Odessa barbs jump from the tank, One on day two and one this morning. No idea why they do like to chase each other a lot so I guess that's why. Water...
Added 12 Lemon Tetras the other day they are pretty little fish, water quality still seems fine too! :)
Adding the Lemon Tetras seems to have pulled the Odessa Barbs out of there shell more, which is great! Feeding time is now a total frenzy! The tank overall looks more alive now! :D
I have...
They are lovely you won't regret it, they need a lot of room though cause they are one active fish!
They are only meant to get to 10cm max size and apparently that is rare in home aquaria where usually they only reach a max size of 7.5 cms , of course this is the first time I have kept these...
At one of the local MA stores they have full grown Odessas in a display tank they are fully black with the red stripe along side, totally amazing looking.
Tank has been running quite a few weeks now, Looking at a picture then and looking at the tank now things are growing nicely, the Hygrophila polysperma grows so fast! I cut it and in 3 days it is almost touching the top of the water again!
A couple of weeks ago I upped the photo-period to eight...
My Wife will kill me if I order it this month!
I have a bit of time before I need it to be honest. The Fluval 205 will survive 2/3rds max stocking so no rush as the first fish have only been in there a month! :)
How do you rate your Ecco Pro Tom?
I am looking to get a new filter in the next couple of months and am tempted by the Ecco Pro 300 for my 30Gal tank. it will be running along side a Koralia NANO 900 so flow isn't the concern I have, BUt i see on this forum you have been having some issues.
Re: 80cmx45cmx45cm Low-Tech Opti White
Odessa Barb Pics. ( Thanks to my lovely wife for the pics )
Chasing my Wifes Finger
The Odessa Barbs like to chase each other a lot!
The first couple of days saw the two largest males assert themselves for dominance!
They seem to...
Re: 80cmx45cmx45cm Low-Tech Opti White
So the Odessa Barbs have been in for a few days and they seem to be settling in good. So I am thinking of what other livestock I can get in the tank. I thought the Odessa Barbs would be mid water swimmers which they are sometimes, but seem to spend most of...
Re: 80cmx45cmx45cm Low-Tech Opti White
The substrate Aquatic potting soil capped with sand. I was using just TPN under advisment from you Tom! :p

Obviously I don't have a heavy fish stocking yet so prahaps I should change to TPN+ until I...
Re: 80cmx45cmx45cm Low-Tech Opti White
I am currently dosing TPN, I thought that had Iron in it. Prahaps I should up the amount I am dosing as I am only doing 5ml a week atm.
Re: 80cmx45cmx45cm Low-Tech Opti White
The Amazon swords don't seem to be doing well. SOme of the leaves on multiple plants have started to show veins as brown.
Any idea what is wrong? All the other plants in the tank are doing well and growing.
I thought Amazon swords were undemanding plants.
Any one have a Koralia Nano 900?
I am trying to find out how long the power cable is on the thing but the internet is being rubbish and not tellimg me.
Tank is ~140 Litres. but space is the main issue, there is no way for me to collect rain water as I don't have any outisde space. Buying RO water means storing it and extra cost.
My tank is Low Tech so no CO2 either.
I was seriously considering an RO unit, I live in a one bedroom flat which is tight on space already.
After reading up and seeing that RO units actually waste quite a lot of water it is really impractical for me.
Hellow there,
My tap water has a PH of 8.0, I am thinking of running peat moss in my filter to help with this.
My concern is after I do a water change won't the PH rise again due to the fresh water then lower over time?
Isn't this a worse situation than having a stable PH of 8?
Re: 80cmx45cmx45cm Low-Tech Opti White
Thanks for the positive feed back everyone! :)
I had a bit of a prune yesterday getting rid of mainly amazon sword leaves that had brown bits on them. The crypts are growing and don't appear to be meltin away. The hygrophila is clearly the fastest growing...
Hello all!
This is my first ever journal to go with my first attempt at a proper planted tank! So I am a little nervous about offering this up!
The tank is an Aquariums LTD tank and looks stunning! I took delivery quite a few months ago now but it has taken me a while to get round to sorting...
Hello been away for a while,
I have a ~30Gallon aquarium I am setting up low tech. Would this pond soil be ok to use as a base substrate and then cap with sand?

Thanks.
It's on Magdelen Road. Between Iffley and Cowley Road.

It's a very impressive looking shop. If you are into marine they probably have the biggest species selection in Oxfordshire. They do have an amazing selection of fish though even for...
Is there any hardscape on the left of the tank? I can't really see from the image.
If not, maybe add some Java fern onto your wood, that would look quite nice, some stem plants to go in the back?
Just thought I'd add as I am in the Oxford area. The Gold Fish Bowl is a nice looking shop but it is very expensive, I have found in my experiance their plants aren't good quality. They do have a nice selection of ferts and equipment though.
I'd suggest ordering your ferts online.
There is a...
OK Thanks, sorry for all the questions I am quite new to this! :)
I will read that site now.
I see seachem do flourite gravel would this be good as a substrate and cap that with black sand?
I will be getting a new tank in a few weeks. It will be 80cm x 45cm x 45 cm. Lighting will be 2 x 18W T8. So not heavy on the light pretty much 1WPG. I am also in the process of trying to source the parts for FE Co2 but this could take some time because I have to work to a budget.
The big issue...
Hello all,
I am getting a new aquarium soon and am keen to get a pair rams once the new tank gets established. I currently have a small group of Harlequin Rasboras. Now when I look at info pages on harlequins I see varying information on their temprature tollerance. Some pages list the max...
Well I don't have the regulator yet either, I currently use a DIY CO2 system. Am getting a new tank soon and haven't bought anyhting yet so am trying to get the best system I can without sacrificing a limb to the money god. :/
Hey I have been searching for a while for a decently priced CO2 Cylinder and found this:
http://www.pvrdirect.co.uk/productinfo. ... /1KG/REFIL
Do you think this would be suitable?
For 2 cylinders it would be £19 -some small change delivered. not bad?
I can't see your images it just takes me to an empty google search page.
But I know you can get this:

I run a fluval 205 using the standard ribbed hoses on my 60L currently. I am upgrading soon to a tank ~150L, I want to change the hoses to non ribbed hoses, as I find the ribbed hoses really limiting with what I can do with them.
I find the Ribbed hose is a really strange size and am finding...
I was doing some google searches on something specific to do with aquariums and it led me here. I coudln't read the forum until I registered. Once I had registered I have been reading all day! hope my boss doesn't see! :D
Hello all. o/
I have just recently stumbled on this forum. I see many familiar names from another fish forum which shall remain nameless!
I have been an avid aquarist for over a year now. before that the last time I kept an aquarium was when I was a child. Now at the age of 32 I have a little...
