Just chopped up the sponge in the filter and replanted! Nutrients are passed from the water column through the roots.

Awful, unoriginal, annoying. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen but it's close.

    30cm Cube

Sorry about the dark pictures had to use my phone. It's obviously not finished yet. Need the stems to grow and add some more moss to the front. Will be planting some form of low growing plant in front of the stone on the right. As for the HOB the peace lilly only went in 2 days ago as did the...

    Round cobbles / pebbles

I'm in London but have friends in Brighton so I'm down there quite a bit. Sometimes head to the Witterings to go camping. They weren't especially colourful so I'd imagine it's pretty much the same as Eastbourne!

    Round cobbles / pebbles

Where do you live? I've picked up a few from Brighton and West Wittering is great for larger pebbles.

    30cm Cube

Yes there is that but tbh I didn't really want the hassle of re-ordering and so on. I have ordered from them before and the plants have been fine. They send everything out on the monday and mine were received the next day, the state of the plants couldn't have been from just spending a night in...

    Rocky meadow

Looks great! I echo the comments about keeping it overgrown but I suppose that's the look I prefer.
  11. M

    30cm Cube

Fair enough. It was Plants Alive. The plants were not alive, they were brown and largely leafless. The envelope had flattened the plants and a brown goo leaked out when I opened it, no doubt dead plant matter.

    how many rasboras?

Doh! I should have noticed too
  13. M

    30cm Cube

As far as I'm aware it's not allowed. Suffice to say all the plants melted and died within a few days, other plants are doing fine. No pics as I'm still really unhappy with how things look!

Fluval Studio 900. 'Coastal Erosion' Journal Finished.

Re: Fluval Studio 900. 'Coastal Erosion' Journal. Now that it's been mentioned I think I agree, it just slightly blocks the view of the arch. Other than that it's a really great scape!

It's not as steep now so hopefully it will hold! :o Had a complete disaster with the shrimp, they were sucked into the filter, not the inlet but at the very top where the wire enters there's some suction. Didn't realise until it was too late. Absolutely gutted. Have now replaced the filter...

How much has your equipment setup cost?

My last tank was around £150 all in. My current tank would probably be a little less, maybe £120. Excluding fish and ferts.

  30. M

    Filterless room temp tanks

I'd strongly advise going with a pump for water circulation. Other than that it's fairly simple. Massive amounts of planting and minimal livestock. Stick with stems and root feeders with a fertile substrate, that way you won't need to dose the water column. White Cloud Mountain Minnows seem...

    Seiru Stone and hardness increases

Thanks you two. I'm guessing it should be ok then! Aqua Soil supposedly softens the water so maybe?
  35. M

    Cat litter

I rinsed mine constantly for a few days. Making sure I got my hands well in there to turn over all the cat litter and get it all thoroughly rinsed. When I added it to the tank there was still a fair bit of colour but it cleared up within 3/4 days. It's a bit monotonous but keep at it
  36. M

  37. M

    Seiru Stone and hardness increases

Just read in the journal section it will raise hardness. I never thought they'd have that much of an effect! How much will they typically raise hardness levels? I'm using rainwater so it's fairly soft to begin with. I was looking at keeping RCS and was hoping they'd be ok. It's around 2kg of...

    Cat litter and Bog wood

I'd just throw them both in and accept you'll have a brown fragrant tank for a while. There'll be no fish so what's the difference between using your tank and the bath? The smell might go after a week but you'll still be left with a bit of colour from the cat litter, it will be gone soon enough...

Does high tech necessitate regular water changes?

Yeah I just misunderstood what EI actually was. I usually think of EI as the maximum you need and anything below just becomes......something else.
  49. M

Does high tech necessitate regular water changes?

I stand corrected. I was under the assumption Mark's dosing was fairly low or at least at a much lower level than regular EI calculations.

Fantastic use of lava rock! So refreshing to see such a different choice of rock.
  52. M

Does high tech necessitate regular water changes?

You don't need to use EI it just makes dosing a lot easier. Mark Evans doesn't use EI. You don't have to do large water changes with CO2 per se. Large water changes are needed because of fast plant growth. Yes, injection of CO2 will usually lead to a much faster growth rate but it's the waste...
  53. M

Is there any need for a rest day in EI dosing?

My understanding was that it removes the waste produced by the plant growth. Why would you need to remove excess minerals? What does reset the tank parameters even mean?

    C02 Reg not working?

It's been sitting in the shed for a year, just a basic regulator, no dials. I've removed it just to check the FE is full and it lets out a nice healthy blast. What could be wrong with it?

Pump height on the EX400 only seems to be 60cm!? Think I might go for the 600 at £60. That gives me 20x turnover but more is always best as I can just turn it down if needed.
  71. M

Rain Water - Who uses it in their tanks

I was going to but worried about pollution. I'd use the prefilter above and possibly run a UV filter for a bit before adding to the tank. I have a water butt and it's absolutely full of bloodworms (or similar) so unsure how clean it is. Because my tank is only 30L I'm just running tap water...

    Discussion: High end 'v' affordability

It can be done cheaply if you have the knowledge. Unfortunately if you've just entered the hobby the first place you'll look is at your LFS or some of the big online retailers and these aren't the best places if you want to cut costs. Wood or rocks? Collect your own. Tanks? Ebay or find a...
