    Chihros or Twinstar

Thanks for the replies, I can raise the lights if I have to but it’s not my preferred option but it could be an option if it’s the only way. There will be some space at the sides but only a couple of centimetres on each side. It’s the reason why I thought I might need two smaller lights...

    Chihros or Twinstar

Hi Looking at setting up a custom made tank in the near future size L82 X W55 X D55 cm. It’s going to be low tech this time round but may add co2 at some point so looking for a LED light that I will be able to increase the output should I decide to add co2. I have been looking at the Chihros...

    Golden Lazer Cory Price

Hi all, thanks for getting back to me, I live in Warrington Cheshire and have a good relationship with my LFS’s. I just feel £1 for a relative expensive fish is a bit low, as I said I’m not looking at making a large amount of money from this I just want a fair price. As it stands I made a...

    Golden Lazer Cory Price

Hi, About three years ago a bought 6 small Golden Lazer Cory’s I now have around 30 of them in a 180 ltr low tech tank. The reason I have around 30 is they won’t stop breeding. On One occasion I took out the eggs and got them to a good size and I thought I could sell them on but all I was...

    LED for a hooded tank

Thanks for your help everyone, doesn’t seem there’s much choice for hooded tanks. Cats repeatedly jumping into fish tanks, glad I have dogs far more sensible. I’ve seen a few D.I.Y setups on the net might be an option; I will pass on the info Thanks Col

    LED for a hooded tank

Thanks for the replies; I couldn’t see anything for a hooded tank on my search. I will see he if will change his mind over the hood, I never thought of an open hood. Zozo, I had not thought of using a cat to remove Bio film before, thanks for the tip. Cheers

    New Tank New Substrate

I am replacing my 6 foot tank with another one in June and I am considering using Tropica soil for the substrate or mineralised soil which I started to do back in Feb. I am a bit concerned about using Tropica soil or any other clay based substrate as I have haerd that they my not last very long...

    Aquaticlife Halo Led

Okay I think I am sold on the Kessil 160 now, I keep coming back to them. If I end up with five or six of them it will still work out within budget and still be less power consumption than my current T5’s. Not sure how I will mount them yet as I really don’t like their Goosenecks I might make...

    Aquaticlife Halo Led

Yes it’s the height of 24” that is my main concern I was thinking of four Kessil 160 as I think that would give me good coverage. I phoned Charter House and they said it would but also recommended the Radion XR15, they use more power than the Kessil at 60 w but are in the same price range so...

    Aquaticlife Halo Led

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys very much appreciated, Alto I have been reading a lot about the Kessil lights and one common complaint about them is that like other led lights they don’t show reds off as vibrant as say T5’s it’s the only reason I didn’t buy four 160 Tuna Suns and I...

    Aquaticlife Halo Led

I am now in a market for some led lights, I like the look of both TMC and the Kessil lighting but I believe they don’t grow reds very well. I have seen some lights on the web by a company called Aquatic life they do a model called the Freshwater Halo which apparently grows reds very well. They...

TMC Lights for 6 foot tank

Hi jazza Yes that helps I now have more confidence that these lights are what I am after. As a matter of interest what type of carpet plants are you able to grow Thanks Col

TMC Lights for 6 foot tank

Yes I will need some controllers; I like the sunrise and sun set effect on my low tech tank which has two grow beams. Although as the 1500 tiles are going on a well-established tank I may run them at 100% as the tank is 600 mm deep. Col

TMC Lights for 6 foot tank

Trying to find a set of LEDs for my 1800mm x 600mm x 600mm high tech tank, I have spoken to TMC today and they recommended that I get four 1500 tiles. They said they would choose the colour plus but were willing to drop a set of both off at my LFS for me to view them working as some people find...

    t5 and algae

Hi you also say you have BBA, this is a sign of poor flow so you will need to increase this to 10 you tank volume per hour. You can do this by more filtration (the best way) or by using power heads. This will also ensure you’re C02 and ferts are distributed over all your plant surfaces so they...

    Kessil Lighting

Hi All, Has anyone ever used Kessil Lighting before. I have a 6'x2'x2' tank, thinking of changing it over to LED Lighting in the summer I have been told I need 3 Kessil 360 Tuna Suns but at 90w each that would not be saving me much on the electric. Do you think 4 Kessil 160's would be...

Suggest a wavemaker pump for my tank please.

My first choice would be for an External filter I would always choose more filtration over a power head but if budget or space won’t allow this then the Koralia would be a good choice, I have recently bought one and they are gentle but do provide good flow.

    Beast of a filter

I have the Eheim 2080 and I think it’s the best filter I have ever owned very quiet and easy to prime it’s not easy to lift out of the cabinet when full but no large filter is, It’s not cheap but then again my older Eheim must be ten years old and still going strong so I do consider it...

Koralia Magnum 5 For Extra Flow

Hi all, I have a small problem with BBA and occasionally with BGA, My tank is 6 foot so I currently have two external filters, I don’t have any more room for another external filter so was going to use a Koralia Magnum 5 to increase the flow around the tank. Has anyone had any issues using...

Disaster with my Giesemann Infinity lights

Thanks all, ATI seems to suit the bill, my lights are 18" above the tank, I was thinking of turning off my MH & lowering the unit down as many seem to get good results without MH and just using the T5's Victor your right, I didnt know you could get relacements. As luck would have it they are...

Disaster with my Giesemann Infinity lights

Hi all, I’ve had a bit of a disaster with my Giesemann Infinity lights, ordered some replacement T5 Tubes but they won’t fit properly they just turn in their housing without locking into position. I’ve tried to put the old tubes back in but they are doing the same. Never had this problem...

    Large tank lights and filter

Hi Sanj, Thanks for the reply, the CO2 will need to be sorted out I was thinking of putting in a Aquamax 5oo diffuser on the return so it would be well diffused although I would expect to use a lot more with this size of tank. I had a look at your journal that’s a good scape I don’t mind the...

    Large tank lights and filter

Hi Guys, Went to my LFS last week end and there was an 8’ x 2.6’ x 2.6’ tank in there complete with a solid oak cabinet, well I just have to have one of those, it looked great, even better my wife thought so as well so no difficult sell on that score either. Only two factors to resolve...

    advice on aquaEL external unimax500

Hi This by far is the worst filter I have ever owned, I was so fed up with mine that it went in the bin. Buy an Eheim 2080 far better, just my opinion but try cleaning one out and explaining to the wife why the carpets soaking wet again, not easy. Cleaned my Eheim out today for the first...

    L128 Blue Phantom Plec

Hi all, I have just seen two very nice plec’s in my LFS but don’t know much about them L128 Blue Phantom Plec, there are different opinions on the net about them. I have been told they are active during the day which is what I want and that the eat algae as well as other types of food but...

    Hydrogen Peroxide???

Hi, Not been on for a long while so just noticed this post, I have used Hydrogen Peroxide; I have found it works very well on most forms of algae. I get mine from the local chemist, its cheap and effective I use the 3% Vol and always do a 50% water change half an hour after a treatment. I...

    Light Levels

That’s a very informative response thank you very much, as soon as my current mix has ran out I will change over to EI I only have about a weeks left of my current batch and I will have to get some more pipe work for the filter before I can install the second one anyway. I have an external...

    Light Levels

I do use the drop checker method with 4dh solution, and my diffuser is the ceramic plat type which replaced the JBL one that came with the C02 set. I clean it about every two weeks to keep the bubbles as fine as possible, I actually have two of these one at each end of the tank one works fine...

    Light Levels

Hi all, Thanks for the replies more food for thought, just to answer some of the points raised. I do use a pressurised C02 system, it’s from JBL. It’s at the opposite end of the tank to the reactor and in the opposite corner so I should have good water flow but will probably put in...

    Cyanobacteria (BGA)

I have just joined but thought I would chip in here as I had a bad case with BGA; I got rid of mine in the end by using Erythomycin. It worked very well but required a lot of water changes to clean the tank afterwards and mine is a 180 gallon tank, my fish did not suffer at all in fact they...
