    Don't have plants near sump drain. But have made a diy cover after finding 15 ember tetras in the sump. I'll try and get a picture but essentially I cut up an old sieve and wrapped the mesh over the drain. Works a treat. :)

    Had some time to google last night general opinion is that cherry, alder and in fact any uk hardwood is likely to be ok. Just need to let it dry out to ensure sap has dried. Lots of advice in this forum and other well respected websites.

    Cheers Darrel, the cat litter is for the baskets . The guttering will be square down pipe so the baskets will suspend in holes the the pipe. Loads of us videos and guides using 4inch pipe but that's expensive here.

    Not sure the mushing should happen, but others with experience might explain why. I think I have the same as the guys above, no mush in any of the tanks I have. Tescos cat litter another great very cheap source for it. Again , give it a good rinse to get rid of perfume and most of the dust.

    Cool thanks, anyone any idea what the logic is behind making the hole, I assume it reduces pressure and allows air to flow into pipe further down the stack and therefore removes sucking air from top of tank. I assume water won't flow out of the hole?

    Yep good point, where the water comes out of the tank and back into the sump there is a pipe that takes the overflow out. The noise is from there. If I pull the return pipe out the sump it goes quiet ( except for the noise of the water hitting the sump surface) I am assuming it's air sucking in...

    Seal with couple of coats of pva glue (mixed with a bit of water to thin) then couple of thin coats of emulsion then final coats of whatever paint you want and water won't get to it. My cabinets are home built and have survived spillages and leaks.

    I've used water warmed and much lower temp than the tank water and never seen an issue. Yes declorinate if using tap but 10-20% water changes with cold water have triggered breeding in my tanks before now....

    Lindy, is the ph holding out? What's it levelled at? I'd argue that the tetratec should be fine long term, so long as you constrain the outflow not the inflow. If you want to maintain turnover but reduce the turbulence then consider a lilly pipe or if really concerned a poppy pipe.

And looking at other people's pics I think a lot of us use them. There are slight differences in the spaces between plugs on some extensions, these work...

    Lift, so sorry to hear, does sound like the corydoras brought something in though, steady changes in ph over time are normally ok, crashes in ph not normally good. Choccos are known to survive in ph 7 aren't they just not breed or be at their best.....

    Cheers darrell I don't do powders (not enough experience or time yet) :) , I have tropica specialised at the moment, have been keeping dosing right down as recovering from bad algae outbreak, now that's recovering I'll up the tropica closer to the recommended dosage. Thanks for the guidance.
