yeah I considered a pi but in the end I went for an arduino as i wanted to do it more of an embedded solution rather than computer based solution. if i'd gone for the pi I may as well have just chucked an old £5 android smartphone in as the processor+interface with a usb breakout cable on it.

thats a good question I can't find enough information but as far as I can tell live sand just means it contains natural sea bacteria instead of being dead sand not that it contains critters for turnover/movement.

tetras will fin nip guppies so guppies probably hiding for safety could also be low oxygenation

consdering how often floss needs changing tbh i'd not put it in the bottom as every week you'll be dismantling the filter it'll drive you nuts. personally i'd put it on the top so i only had to open the filter to replace it rather than lift it all out and what not (the fx5 weighs a tonne when full)

if you're 3 weeks into a fishless cycle and the tank is full of plants already then i'd say it is probably 99% cycled already. add your fish fry or adults either works. start doing your weekly water changes and you're good to go.

add a stabaliser in and you don't have a mould problem i mix up 1 litre at a time which lasts for about 3 months before i need to mix up more.
