DIY Stand. What do you think?

 London mate! Can help you out if you live near by! If I had to make another one I used only plywood, no timbers. But I have an even better idea. The other day I was wasting my time in Ikea and had a great idea! For my next stand I'm gonna use kitchen cabinets!!! You can by them in various...

DIY Stand. What do you think?

You're right, there is no cross bracing. I used 9mm thick plywood on the sides, after screwing and glueing them on it feels indestructible!!! :D Thanks very much for all the advice and comments guys, really appreciate it!!!

DIY Stand. What do you think?

Thank you James!! Yes, I'm very pleased! :D :D No, the hood is original (Rio 180 2x45w T5). Was thinking about removing the top frame and make a new hood and frame, but don't want to spend more money on it. Now just can't wait to fill it up and plant it!

DIY Stand. What do you think?

Finally an update!Sorry for being late!! First the pics: At the end I decided to go black. The tank is black so this seemed the best colour for me. I used exterior plywood to cover the sides and the top and pre-made doors from Wickes. Painted all with matt black wood paint. I'm quite...

    Aquarium-safe paint/varnish?

No probs! I'll get some soon as well as I need to paint a few things too. Found some on ebay, as far as I remember the price is/was around £8.

    Aquarium-safe paint/varnish?

Krylon fusion is safe, loads of people using it. Haven't tried though!! You can read about it on monsterfishkeepers.com

DIY Stand. What do you think?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your comments! Willjones - Beautiful stand, well done!! :D I was gonna build mine low but at the end it will be as high as a normal Juwel stand. A bit worried about the width though! I have thick carpet in the room which I'm afraid will make it a bit wobbly...

DIY Stand. What do you think?

Tomorrow morning first thing is Wickes! I'll go for pine panels with dark oak varnish :D Try to finish it by next weekend! Is the varnish itself enough protection against water spillages?

Can the mechanical filter remove nutrients?

 Last time when I emptied the tank I ripped it out and since than only a few suction cups holding it in place. I was planning to replace it just hasn't happened jet. Same time I've replaced half of the sponges to sintered glass too :) Thanks for your answers!!

Can the mechanical filter remove nutrients?

Hi ceg, Thank you for your answer!! I really have to sort out my CO2 injection than. I thought I did it, but obviously it's not good enough. The poly pads don't cost me much, I got them from ebay (100 for £10 I think). Now I know what I want for xmas! A CO2 reactor and a big-big external...

Can the mechanical filter remove nutrients?

Hmm. I have a few question if you don't mind? :D Can this waste deposit on the leafs? That would explain why some older leafs look unhealthy and dark. Is this waste producing traceable to unbalanced nutrient levels or general plant health? Will this level ever drop once everything settled down...

DIY Stand. What do you think?

That's exactly what I was thinking about this morning with a coffee in my hand. :D I'm going to put a leg in in the front and 2 45 degrees at the back so it stays kind of opened. Still dunno about the cladding. I've seen some good ideas on another forum, but haven't got the tools! :x I guess...

Can the mechanical filter remove nutrients?

I like my water superclean so I'm using not 1 but 3 white filter pads in the Juwel filter every week. 3 in the same time  Sometimes I change it after a few days. Don't know why is it so dirty, I have low bio-load. Am I removing only the bad things or some good stuff as well?

DIY Stand. What do you think?

Don't really now yet. I was gonna use 15mm chipboard for the sides and the top, pre-made doors on the front. Found some good ones at Wickes, but they around £10 each. James made me thinking with the plywood. I'll try to go back this week and look around. Chipboard is good, cos they can cut it...

DIY Stand. What do you think?

How does the "structural ply wood" look like? Is it the one with the big chips? :D I want one layer on the top and one on the bottom of the top frame. That should hold it. Should.... :?

DIY Stand. What do you think?

Clad? Do you mean cover it? Or treat it? I'll get some chipboard from homebase, they have more colours than Wickes and it's even closer :D

DIY Stand. What do you think?

It's called CLS Timber and yes Wickes rules!!! The 45 degree is a good idea, but don't really want anything in the front.

DIY Stand. What do you think?

Ok, I've built this one in the afternoon. All my measurements worked out well so I'm quite pleased :D My question is do you think it's strong enough to hold a RIO 180? I still have 2 other legs which supposed to go in the middle, but I rather leave that space opened. Here are the pics...

    Cryptocoryne wendtii

Well I gave it a good trim on the weekend so maybe in a few weeks time! :) Used the calculator on James site to make my E.I. this is how I got the 30.7, not using test kits, realized it's wasted money! I mix this in separate bottles: Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) 30g/250ml...

    Cryptocoryne wendtii

Hi! I’m having some trouble with my crypts. Leafs start growing well but once they reach a good length the colour turns darker green and in a few weeks almost brown. I was suspicious about the CO2 but it seems fine (lime green drop checker). Upped my PO4 to around 9ppm but still no results...

    Fluctating CO2

Yes I have a drop checker which is always green. I have a new plant in the tank, a Hygrophila difformis and the leafs are hardly distorted. Some other plants look a bit weird too. The dosage should be fine that's why I'm suspecting CO2 problems. I guess I'll wait another few days see how it...

    Fluctating CO2

Sometimes when the CO2 turns on the bubbles come around 1 bps and sometimes 2-3 bps. Do you think it's the needle valve or maybe the solenoid? I'm using normal silicone airline, can that be the problem? Don't use diffuser, a pump breaks the bubbles.

    Eheim universal vs Eheim Compact+?

Does anyone have any of these pumps? I'm thinking about to get one but can't decide. The compact+ is cheaper, smaller and more powerful (on paper) but the universal somehow looks more reliable to me. Maybe because of the size. :) I have a Newjet pump which supposed to pump out 1200 lph, the...

    Phosphate again!

Hi, I'm just about to mix my own EI but don’t understand something. Because this will be the first I'm going keep everything in separate bottles in the first few months to see what happens. What I don't understand is the added amount of Phosphate. James and ceg advises the concentration...

    Short roots

Hi I'm trying to grow Eleocharis parvula but they does not seem to develop at all! :? I use tropica substrate and covered it with about 5-7 cm coarse sand, but it looks like the roots don't reach the substrate. Can this be the problem?

    Drop checker PH test confusion

So I'm having trouble understanding my new CO2 system. :? I set it up as the big book says but something just isn't right. I'm using a drop checker with the 4dKH and the Hagen PH test kit, adding about 2 bps of CO2 and the checker seems to be all right. It's green-ish. But when I check the PH...

    Tank temperature

I'm not polish but I use the same system. Except I use some old charger which pumps out 12v and it's just enough for the 12cm fan. I've bought too many for my chase :) I use only one and it has a speed controller and the blue lights just look cool during the night! Had to cut a hole on...

    Water change practice

Hi, The subject tells everything. I'm just curious who does it how! :D Do you guys age your water? If yes for how long? I age 40 litres for a few days in a big plastic bin. JBL SintoMec

Hi all! I have replaced the sponges to JBL SintoMec in my rio 180 filter. My question is can I get rid of the nitrate and/or the carbon sponges? I'm not sure if the rings will completely remove all nitrates and chemicals. Advice please!

New setup doesn't want to bloom!

Hi All, First timer :( I need some advice guys! I have a new setup (about 6 weeks old) and in the first 2 weeks everything was fine. The problem started when I went for holiday for 3 weeks and flatmates forgot to add the TPN!! Now I know who my mates are! :) When I came home I saw that the...
