Not been able to maintain tank for about 5 weeks due to taking kids to Uni and holiday, so tank left in holiday mode (reduced light, CO2, ferts etc) but came back to this.... This was a free arrival with some fish I got....
Many people ask "What test kit should I use to test my tank water ?" or "My test kit says my nitrate is high ?", so before posting a question on test kits and hobby test kit results, please read the quoted text below from ceg4048's excellent article on "The Estimative Index (EI) Dosing with Dry...
All this talk about CO2 concentration and why CO2 turn on two hours before lights on got me thinking about how does the CO2 concentration vary with time for our CO2 injected high tech tanks.
Well here is my stab at the maths, remembered from A level maths 35 years ago (oh and my maths books)...
Almost every couple of days there is someone on this forum who reports they cannot get their drop checker to change colour despite everything they try.
In almost 100% percent of the cases it because of poor CO2 injection and distribution in the tank.
However, despite many members repeating the...

Once again I due to Johnny McFumbleFingers and Mr FailureTo RTFM, after replacing a timer I ended up putting 240ml liquid carbon into my 180litre tank. Whoops. 50x times overdose.
Sat down at 8pm'ish and could hear whirring...quick investigation revealed my liquid carbon dosing pump was...

Two of my Clown Loaches (out of 3) have recently just died, about a week apart. One was found dead Fri 17th Jan and other Mon 20th Jan. Both were 10-15cm long. On water change day Sunday 19th Jan the two remaining loaches appeared to be OK.
No sign of white spot on them or other fish. No sign...
I have run for two years an algae free (apart from odd BBA) high tetch CO2 added Juwel Vision 180 tank fitted with Arcadia T8 tubes (2 x 25W).
Looking to add more light as definitely having difficulties growing some "higher tech" plants at substrate level. Its not CO2 or ferts or flow issue as...
Just bought 6 long handled tea spoons (latte spoons) for bargain price of £1.49 in Robert Dyas. Perfect for measuring ferts and to be left in the dry salts bag.
Replaces my previous normal length tea spoons, £1.99+p&p ebay, which are not now such a bargain.
If you read various other forums, there are people out there making some quite massive aquariums in their houses (and sheds).
For example:
This 20 foot marine aquarium, 5,500 litre
UltimateReef.com - View Single Post - OMC: 20ft long x 2ft wide x 4ft high And 7ft x 7ft x 4ft Triton
or this...
Just been given a Baby BiOrb (30litre) tank & setup from some ones son who found maintenance too hard and just killed fishes.
Anyone got any killer planted thoughts ?
I was thinking, adding bit more ceramic filter bits, as don't appear to be that many in the filter, and using sand as...
Had a timer failure last week and ended up empting 1litre of 1.5 strength EI Macro mix (from Aquarium Plant Food) into my 180litre tank. Not 100% sure what happened, but left the remote control for my timers away from the tank which managed to turned air on, lights off, ferts pump on but not...
Just about to buy a Aquanano 40 (and stand), to aquascape and keep shrimp.

Anyone got any comments and/or advice. I understand the light is described as "adequate"
Reason for choosing this tank are.
- Has to high WAF (wife acceptance factor) as likely to be in lounge.
- Has...
One issue I have my high tech tank is the length of time required for me to do a 50% water change (90litres in my case). This is made worse in, my house, due to use of a water softener (incoming water is 22° Clark) meaning I can't use hot house water in water changes. I have been mixing tap...
I am starting on my next DIY project and want/need to start creating a posting with what I have now, but have not yet finished (or even started) the project.
Is there a way to save a message to "draft" section, where I can access it to add/edit as I go along in next week or two ? When...
Needed a solution to fert dosing whilst I am away for 3 weeks shortly (and as I keep forgetting). Time to make a gadget....
Here is the finished item, awaiting to be fitted.
And two one litre containers for the mixes.
And inside.
I got two peristaltic pumps from...

Just a report on my algae issues and successful cure.
A newly planted Juwel Vision 180, IE dosing and CO2 but mature filters and substrate.
After a week or two started suffering minor algae issue, brown powder type algae on leaves, BBA on wood and thread algae starting to appear on the plants...
Been niggling in my mind for ages about CO2 and rubber and silicone as a general no no in aquatic world, but not seen any real evidence of why not. (OK someone in US tried 25m of silicone tubing as tank CO2 diffuser and got nothing and others report issues with clear vinyl tubing cracking)...
Saw something somewhere, where the CO2 was turned of an hour or so before lights off, but air via air stone turned on an hour after lights off (and off an hour before lights on) so as to re-oxygenate the water during the night for both fish and plants.
Anyone got any comments on this regime ...
