Advice please - First planted tank very soon

You could get an extra powerhead to help circulate the water. Most filters have much lower flow rate for the recommended tank size than most planted tank people want unfortunately.

    Too much lighting?

Hi, I have a fluval chi (5 gallon) aquarium and i want to have it as a shrimp tank however the lighting isn't very good at all. I want to use an arcadia ark 9W light, but I'm not sure if I would require co2 when using this light. I want to keep this tank low tech though. If i can use it then...

    Java fern

This is about windelov as well, I have a high tech tank now and the java fern windelov is growing much better, but I'm not adding nitrogen or any of that just carbon. So I think they just need a decent amount of light to grow quickly and my main tank is only 0.8 watts per gallon of t8 lighting.

    Amount of light.

Hi I have a super fish 40l cube with eclispe 11 watt compact t5 lighting and I want this tank to be high tech but I'm not sure about the addition of co2 or the plants to use. Currently I have some ludwigia (not sure what kind), crypt parva, crypt tropica and some sort of micro vallis. I'm...

Is there a how to attach another tube into your hood topic, because I'm not too sure how to do it?

    Celestial Pearl Danio tank size

I just thought they'd look great in the cube but obviously the bigger tank is usually better. I'd probably buy 6 or 7 then, I'm hoping for this cube to be high tech, the plants are still settling in though. I'll start a journal for it soon.

    Celestial Pearl Danio tank size

Hey guys, I want to get some celestial pearl danios but i don't know if they would be suitable for my 40l nano cube, I know there care but not what tank size they need. Help would be appreciated :D If they can't go in my 40l cube would they be able to go in my 70l tank?

    Getthejist's 100l Tank

I actually was thinking of upping the light a bit because the aquarium looks quite dark and I have another 2 tubes and a starter, so I can either keep the tank lighting as it is, use a 15w tube or a 20w tube. Any thoughts on this?

    Java fern

I dose micro nutrients but I don't dose much. And with regular java I've had it in a tub with no extra light or ferts and its grown :)
  12. G

    Java fern

This is just regarding windelov, my windelov grows really well in low light with no added co2 or carbon. Obviously not as fast as in a high tech tank but it still has good growth.

    Getthejist's 100l Tank

I just bought 4 ottos from my lfs and these guys were very healthy, they'd been in the shop for 2 weeks and grown quite a bit because between 5 of them and a couple plecs they managed to get rid of ALL of the algae in the tank and there was so much algae the week before the tank looked hideous...

Unfortunately I only have the one bulb so I can't mix and match. And with the runners that sprout several inches away, once they've grown roots can i cut the connecton between that and the orginal (mother?) plant?

    Getthejist's 100l Tank

Oh ok, the orange isn't the nicest colour and will probably look better with a whiter light. Also If my swords were growing any faster I'd almost have a carpet :D Also how do you make pygmy chain swords into to two seperate plants ? Cut straight down the middle?

    Getthejist's 100l Tank

I said that as well but was told that I'd need to use co2 if I did http://ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=20473 and so far I'm getting pretty good growth so I'm not bothered. The only thing is that its a bit dim so I'm going to change the bulb to a 7500k one or higher as the one I have now...

I have 1 T8 fluorescent tube, no co2 or liquid carbon and weekly dosing micro nutrients :) I think I actually have some ludwigia repens in there. I'll look out for all of the plants you guys mentioned

17 US gallon semi low tech (excel supplemented)

I keep a low tech planted tank with Echinodorus tenellus without co2 and its grown loads, it looks more grassy than when I originally bought it so it was probably previously grown emersed and it is growing like wildfire, if I had a high tech tank and the apparent 2500% growth increase I'd have a...

    Java Moss

Does java moss actually look good? I want to attach some to some wood and maybe make a moss carpet but it seems that java moss grows uncontrollably and in a very random way, therefore making it look scruffy. I have a low light tank so I'm not sure whether it'll stay reletively neat or it'll...

    Ottos

Would they eat hair algae? Also I have had an otto before and he/she ate green spot algae, and there were regular algae tabs thrown in because there were shrimp in the tank, also is diatoms the brown algae you get when you first set up a tank? Do you think they'd eat shrimp wafers as they have a...

    HMA filter

I'm still quite confused, should I use an HMA filter? I'd really don't want to mess with RO water and I don't want to have to buy an RO unit and a HMA unit as this would be quite useless as I don't have enough tanks or big enough tanks to make it worth while.

    Community fish

Thanks Darren I took a look at sundadanio axelrodii and it looks like a cool fish but my filtration is quite powerful so it may not like the tank although most areas are quite calm. I don't think the fish is very common though but I'll keep an eye out for it ;)

    Community fish

Hey guys, I was wondering what fish would look good with neon tetras in a planted tank http://ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=20624. I was thinking of going with harlequin rasboras but I'm not sure of their favoured conditions and would like a fish that likes soft acidic...

Re: 100l Tank I'm not sure theres space for them unless they can be planted. Has anyone tried planting the roots of java fern in the substrate but keeping the rhizome above the substrate? Also my shops aren't the greatest for plants so theres no guarantee they'll have the common species let...

    Getthejist's 100l Tank

Re: 100l Tank I am dosing micro nutrients once a week and I now have some fish in there so they should provide some macro nutrients. I'll try and get a better picture but my camera doesn't like my tank so they don't turn out great. My water doesn;t have much in it so I think I need to dose...

    Ottos

Hey guys just wondering if ottos would be good in my tank viewtopic.php?f=35&t=20624 as I want an algae eater but its low tech and I'm going to have shrimp in there so I don't know if enough algae would be produced. I am growing algae on my windowsill in so bottles so I could put those in if I...

Can I have some fish suggestions please?

I thought cpd's still prefer 3 foot tanks? Also with a heater a betta should do fine, except I think no flow is a bad choice as even Walstad uses a good amount of flow, but for a betta I guess lower amount of flow would be acceptable. I would suggest getting a really small filter possibly with a...

    HMA filter

I was actually going to use a HMA filter as someone who breeds quite a lot of shrimp uses HMA because it doesn't take out the minerals. Also I don't really know how to go about remineralising RO water. By RO or rainwater do you mean RO or rainwater or re-mineralising or rainwater? Is there a...

    HMA filter

Well I wanted it for my inverts and possibly for my main tank viewtopic.php?f=35&t=20624. I thought this would be better as it removes the chlorine and chloramines but dechlorinater only binds them (correct me if I'm wrong). Also I wanted some quite sensitive shrimp and I don't want to take any...

    Getthejist's 100l Tank

Hello, this is my 100l tank. This is my first proper planted tank although I have kept plants before with great success It has a hydor prime 30 canister filter which provides good circulation (900lph but probably less) and has a massive 5(although mine appears to be 7) litre capacity...

    Good plants for low/med lighting

Hey guys, I was wondering what plants do well in low/medium lighting without co2 but with ferts? As I want some plants in my 100 litre tank (my tank description is in the new member introduction bit I think or in the lighting section) but I am unsure of what plants would really...

    Upgrading lighting

I'm using dirt but I don't want very slow growth, thats why I want the extra tube, also I know of people who have crypts in tanks with bright light and I was going to get some crypts and put them in a shaded area of my tank. If I got a 10 w tube would that be ok to use and keep down water changes?

    Upgrading lighting

I might forget the carbon then but i still want slightly better lighting at least 1-1.2 watts per gallon, also what is the definition of a high tech tank?
  40. G

    Upgrading lighting

That is my tank, however I have a hydor prime 30(900lph) and I'm usingg it instead of the slim 20. I am also unsure about the use of liquid carbon with moss but I think I may dose the lower amount of carbon or do a test with some moss in glasses and see how they grow with or without carbon. I...
