Good evening all.
I have been a member of UKAPS for 5 years, but have been away from the forum for a few years. I have huge respect for the folks here and learnt a great deal the forum's pro's, about subjects such as CO2, flow, and fert's.
Today I decided that I needed to completely start again...
Grrrrr
I am now 29 months into my first foray into tropical fishkeeping and still at it. Still watching and still learning and grappling with the planted tank and what is happening.
This weekend I did my usual weekly water change and switched everything back on. Come 2pm my shrimp tank lights...
Hi and thanks for reading this post.
Background
I started this hobby 2 years ago and got my first ever tank and Rio 180l after getting over my desire to have a BiOrb. Since then I have learned a lot from the great people on this forum and 1 year later I added a Nano CRS tank which this too...
It's nearly Christmas time and family are asking the difficult questions of what would I like for a present. Life would be easy if I could just reply, a new house, a couple of new expensive tanks, filters and lights. But I don't have family who are flush and generous.
So I will have to make do...
Hello
I did a spot check on my fish tank today and in particular the internal Juwel filter. The reason I check the filter is because I normally find a cherry shrimp in there.
To my surprise I found 2 quite small Cherry Shrimp in the filter. So I am guess someone has been a bit busy!!! :cigar...
Hi Guys & Gals
I am a couple of months into my new shrimp tank which is populated with plants and CRS and all doing well.
The nano tank I got came with a Dennerle nano filter which has worked well to date. It silently ripples the water surface in my low tech tank. Oxygen is supplied by a...
Hi guys and gals
I have been hovering around the checkout button for some items for my shrimp today. One of the items was some Benibachi Baby food.
I get the impression that powder food is best for the little fellas, but wondered if there was a clear winner in the baby shrimp food market and/or...
I have a small low tech planted tank
No co2
Lights on for 6 hours
Only CRS shrimp
Is there and minimum or optimum time for lights on for the shrimp or do plants take priority?
Cheers in advance
Roly
Now Autumn appears to be upon us. I wondered if there were certain leaves and other tree based seed type things that I could take advantage of in my local surroundings for my shrimp and fish tanks.
BTW I live in England.
I was swear I have several Adler trees nearby me. Or should I say to...
First time shrimp keeper. I have just added my first CRS to my nano tank using RO water for the first time and I have a question.
Optimum Conductivity/TDS for the CRS appears to be 80-180ppm from my research.
If I see my conductivity increasing past those parameters do I just do a water...
Not sure where to post this, so I thought I would post it here.
I have just noticed these critters in the tank. No not the shrimp.
I would post a video but not sure how.
There are very small white things jumping around the tank substrate.
Any idea what they are? Are they harmful? Are...
Hi
I recently bought a second hand tank, filter, heater and light. Which I have been bringing up to speed for a CRS only shrimp tank. All going well but I am wondering if the heater is up to the job.
It is a Fluval nano heater with no control and goes straight into the tank rather than...
I find myself on week 3 of cycling my first nano shrimp tank.
Status so far:-
Planted, cycling using some filter material from my fish tank. Bundled in with some wool and a 60 dennier stocking end containing purigen, all packed into a nano filter.
NO CO2 and lights on for 5-6 hours a day...
Not that I like researching the hell of each item I buy for my tanks, but rather I want to make sure I am getting the right thing for the job and not buying cheap and end up buying twice.
So with my new shrimp tank project just kicked off, a kind member suggested I get a TDS meter off ebay...
When I think back a year ago when I first purchased my first ever tank, a Juwel Rio 180, the assistant in the fish shop said about shrimp and that he bet (cheekily) that I would get into it as it was the new thing. At the time, I thought he was mad and I nodded with a smile and moved back to the...
A bit of scene setting.
New nano tank for CRS (not bought yet) still in planning stage.
About to buy substrate and plants.
For cost saving sake can I cycle the tank with just the plants and substrate with tap water and then once cycled, switch to RO? And can I do a huge massive water...
Hi I can see the other post, but could not see the volume calc.
I have a 36 x 22 x 26 tank which I am going to be setting up for CRS shrimp.
Is a 3 ltr bag of substrate enough or should I get a 9 ltr bag. Or better off can someone show me the calc.
Want to have some landscaping but clearly not...
Hello
I am one year into fishkeeping and in my 180l tank I already have Amano and red cherry's shrimp.
I recently added some low grade CRS to the tank and promptly saw them disappear never to be seen again (i'm sure they are there. Just hiding).
Which got me thinking that I saw in my LFS...
Tricky one working out which discussion to post to. In the M&S I chose this because I guess the leaves affect the water chemistry.
I bought some rather large Catappa leaves that are currently swirling around the tank waiting to be water logged and sink to the bottom. My question is can i tear...
Hello.
I am now officially 1 year into my new hobby of fishkeeping.
You can see what I have on the signature, but in summary its a planted tank, CO2 injected and contains community fish, Amano and Cherry red shrimp.
I am in London on Tuesday and was thinking of popping into the ADC shop where...
Just got a pot of Vesicularia
dubyana 'Christmas' in Tropica grow 1-2 format.
What's is the best way to attach to stone or wood? Literally sewing thread?
Cheers

I have searched a read a few threads on the subject, but this is my first holiday whilst owning a tank.
I am going away for 1 week only.
I plan to do my normal 50% water change before I leave.
I planned to leave the lights on for the normal 6hrs
I plan to some how get someone to come round and...
I am getting low on Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4) so I thought I would investigate a top up. I notice on one site that their were different EI mixs for hard and soft water. I am very much in the hard water side.
My question is there anything else I should be adding to the mix other than:-
MgSO4...
Ok was down the LFS getting a replacement CO2 diffuser(what a pigging nightmare that was) and I spotted the Hydor things and thought that they seemed relatively cheap and splashed the cash and bought one.
I get it home and get it out of the box and was a little dismayed at how big the unit is...
Just curious, as its coming up to 1 year with my first tank.
It has a 1cm layer of Tropica substrate with white/cream colour sand on top. Medium planted.
Does the substrate loose its nutrient qualities? Should I be replacing it ( not that I am in a hurry)?
Thanks in advance.

I believe I have some issues with BGA or Staghorn.
It has been around for a few months now.
Mainly coating 50% of the carpet grass blades, the edges of the Anubias and a few other plants.
I have just put in FE setup with solenoid to ensure a constant CO2 supply.
The dosing is standard EI...
Sounds a weird question, but here we go.
I just got some cherry red shrimp through the post and they came in a bag with duckweed on the surface of the water. I am assuming to help the shrimp hold onto something during transport.
Now having added the shrimp i have the duckweed swirling about...
Hello
I am in the position of moving house. So currently I have viewings which occur and various times during the day. These occur maybe 2 times a week.
For the viewings I set the timer for the lights to come on and ensure co2 is being injected way before. Normally lights are on from 4-10pm...
Sorry if this was the wrong section to post in.
Just noticed that the ipad edition of Practical Fishkeeping magazine is one sale for 69p. Just downloaded the last 2 issues at that price.
Just thought you might want to know as I get the impression there are a few readers on the forum.

I have been reading about the positives of Seachem's Purigen product in polishing the water, which seems to be a really a refinement in adding the finishing touches to your setup to make it look good. Ok actually I read the blog article on TGM website about making your tank look good for...
Hi All
Was looking to get some advice on water temp whilst doing water changes.
I did a water change today where I added water from the outdoor mains water tap via the garden hose.
Admittedly the water temp seemed cold. Normal temp for the tank is approx 23 degrees celcius.
After filling the...
About to set sail to the Isle of Wight to visit family. However I do know that on the south side of the island has a lot of nice rock.
What should I be looking out for? Positive and negative.
Not even sure I am allowed to remove rock from the beach.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Every time I go to my LFS to get my monthly supply of Juwel Compact White Filter pads I see the large sheets or rolls of what looks like the same material albeit you cut it to shape.
My question - Is it the same stuff? does it work? is more cost effective? I have a Juwel Bioflo3 or the one...
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a resource about behaviour of different fish breeds?
Just wanted to know what to expect from my few fish, eg. what do Guppy's tend to do, what do Platty's tend to do in the tank. I am learning by just watching, but I guess it was the abnormal...
New hobby for me. Tank is 49 days in and planted.
Was keen to get snails into the tank to keep algae at bay. And sure enough after a couple weeks my wish came true. I got some snails starting to grow.
Fast forward to 49 days and the snails appear to be procreating at will. Thus expanding the...
First Post..
Bit of background. As a 40th birthday present I have been given an aquarium. Ok more like I chose it with a limit in mind. Was shooting for a biOrb until I compared what I could get if I select a more traditional shaped aquarium
First Night
Managed to un-pack and build the cabinet...
Hi All
Have been been thoroughly enjoying ukaps.org and have found it a goldmine of information.
A bit about me. My parents generously offer to buy me a fish tank for my 40th birthday after watching the delight of my 5 year old daughter watching the fish in a tank whilst she was in hospital 3...
