Due to work I am not at home as often so I have invested in a doser, regarding liquid carbon, is it better do dose all in one go or space it out throughout the day, or doesn't it matter?

Hi Ady I already have the tank and discus, I used to have it planted but with work taking more and more time I don't want the extra work of a planted tank so changing to a non planted tank but was just looking at best way to keep algae at bay, Ive got 3 ai prime hd freshwater lights and looking...

no algae in a non planted tank

Thanks Ed I like the idea of floating plants as it would also lower the light for the discus. Any recommendations for low maintenance floating plants, it will be a 6x2x2 tank.

no algae in a non planted tank

I am in the process of setting up a new discus tank but its going to be non planted with just a few bits of bogwood and a few bits of 'litter', my question is how do I keep algae at bay with no plants in tank and I would like to have lights on for at least 8 hrs. 14. leedsrhinojohn

    New Aquael Ultramax

No need for a pre filter, already has one. No need for all that media as its just redundant, the stuff you get is good enough and plenty, plus if you are keeping a planted tank then the plants will do a lot of the filtering. The money you save on not buying extra stuff you don't need can be used...

    New Aquael Ultramax

There are lots of different options depending on your tank, i dont run a planted tank, mines a discus set up so my filter will be set up different to yours, but just make sure you put course, medium and fine sponges at the bottom as water rises from the bottom upwards through the trays. Me...

    New Aquael Ultramax

That guy is only interested in selling his biohome. Filters can be set up in different ways with different media to suit you and your tank, All he ever does is put a sponge in it and fills it up with biohome, as much as possible to maximise the amount people will want to buy. You can fill a...

    New Aquael Ultramax

Hi I'm the guy you've been speaking to on you tube mate. Noise wise, the fx6 has a slight hum but I can only hear it when Im close to the filter but the ultramax you need to have your ear against it to detect any noise.
  19. leedsrhinojohn

    New Aquael Ultramax

The fx6 full of media, I got approx. 3000 lph which is 500 lph less than stated, the aquael ive got 1750 lph which is 250 lph less than stated but it suits my needs just fine. If it wasn't for the easy pre filter of the ultramax then I wouldn't have changed my fx6.
  20. leedsrhinojohn

    New Aquael Ultramax

Hi Kayne The only reason im swapping is the fact it comes with a pre-filter that's so easy to take out and clean, 2 minutes and its done. Its mainly to make things easier for the mrs really, other than that no other reason as ive been more than happy with my fx6 and will recommend it to anybody.
  21. leedsrhinojohn

    New Aquael Ultramax

Ive had one for a few days and even full of media its still throwing out 1750 lph. It is absolutely silent and is easy to control flow. It measures 27x29x45cm Ive swapped it for my fx6 (which is for sale) and im getting 2 more to replace my eheim pro4 600's.

    Heater opinions please

I personally use an aqua medic T-Controller, but mine is for marine so I also run fans from it as well, It is pricey but worth it for marines, not sure about cost effective for freshwater as I use Hydor inline heaters for my tropical tanks. I think a lot of people use elitech controller but I...

    Heater opinions please

Schego titanium heaters are silver and come in 100-600w sizes, but need a temperature controller to regulate temperature as they do not have a thermostat. Best heaters on the market but that is just my opinion.

I use a zip bag and just spray water inside the bag just to keep it moist and put in smallest box possible. Because its light you can post a small parcel maximum size is 35cmx25cmx16cm for £2.95 at post office.

    Decent heater - life expectancy

I have a black back ground and black substrate and the schego stands out rather than a heater in a black cage which blends in nicely. In my opinion schego are the best heaters so for me its purely aesthetics.

    Decent heater - life expectancy

I use a hydor inline on one tank, had it for about 6 years without issue, I use schego titanium on my marine tank in sump without issue, and use newa ecotherm 400w x2 in my discus tank, although still to early to tell about longevity the newa ecotherm hold temperature and are very accurate, they...

    Substrate for 4ft tank

If you want to cap it then you are better off going for Tropica substrate rather than soil
  34. leedsrhinojohn

    Substrate for 4ft tank

Tropica soil doesn't need a cap, its all you need, you only need a top layer with Tropica substrate
  35. leedsrhinojohn

    Substrate for 4ft tank

+1 for Tropica soil, I've used it on all my tanks, big and small, its so easy to use and plants grow excellent in it. And its black. Ive used both soil and powder and much prefer the powder as I find it holds the plants better initially but that might just be me. Or you could use Tropica...

Could you offer me some advice

unless you are a vet and can perform fish autopsies you will probably never know why the fish died, its just one of those things, you only have to look at all forums for 'why did my fish die', if your water is good and no ammonia, nitrites etc it is just one of those things. they come in 50 gallon all the way to 300 gallon per day but this the optimal output, I have a 150 gpd unit and I fill a 300 litre water storage tank in 10 hours, so it depends on how much and how often you change water
  38. leedsrhinojohn

Could you offer me some advice

You need an ro unit if you want to keep softwater fish or use tapwater and keep hardwater fish. I only use ro water on my Discus tank, all my other tanks are hard tapwater which is purely for ease of use really so I only keep hardwater fish in those tanks. So it really depends on what fish you...
  39. leedsrhinojohn

Could you offer me some advice

The best way is an RO unit with a pump if you have low water pressure. I can only recommend what I use and I use Vyair without issue for years. you don't say how hard your water is, it might not need softening, a few more details about your water params would be good and what size tank you have.

What filter would I need for the Aquascaper 900 tank?

The FX4 is a smaller version of the FX6 Never used JBL so cant comment on it but I use the FX6 and its a great filter, I use 3 in total on different tanks and never had an issue at all with any of them.

I used to run the aqua medic twin controller with a schego 600w heater on my marine tank and 6 cooling fans and it stayed constantly at 25c so thumbs up here for the aqua medic controller. Now I use 2 300w heaters just as a failsafe in case one fails I will still have heat.

Filter advice for planted 160 litre tank

You wouldn't go wrong with the 306, its all about opinions but I run Fluval and Eheim filters on my tanks and wouldn't have anything else, its always best to go for more rather than less as the stated flow rates are under optimum conditions without media

What type of aquarist are you?

Livestock needs should always be put first regardless of what you are. I'm a recent convert from the salty side of things and I must admit that I am drawn to having tanks without livestock in them just to relax watching them and potter about with them without having to worry about any livestock.
