If you like algae there are great ones to buy - Never had decent plants.
P@H in Arbroath get a delivery on Thursday they can be good quality. We're on Tuesday anyway :)
Hello All,
My local Dobbies Garden Centre (Monifieth - Near Dundee) had a good selection of items including the following TMC items half price:
Microhabitat 30L - £112
Microhabitat 15L - £50
TMC Aquagro Expert C02 Set - £32
I waas tempted by the Microhabitat - Light & Fitting would cost...
Thank you for your assistance pepedopolous!
I think I shall order a tile mid week.
Hard to justify buying 4 bulbs over two tanks - for nigh on £72 every year.
Not sure I can afford the controller but will see how it goes and adapt accordingly.
Thanks again,
Murray
Hello All,
Just a quick query that didn't seem to warrant its own thread.
I have a Dennerle 60l cube that is 43cm tall. Low tech - Anubias / Java Fern mainly - Nothing "fancy" :)
We have two of these tanks and are finding the bulbs expensive (£16) and awkward to source in the UK
The current...
Yup it's just the wood getting used to its new underwater life :)
It takes time but it won't be slimey for long and will become water logged enough to remove the rock.
All the best with the new tank! It's an exciting time.
I had the same thing happened to my Eheim Pro - I sent it back to Amazon.de
It was originally cheaper importing it from Germany and they were happy to repay the £70 postage cost!
Now I just stick to a mini Bio Power filter from Eheim - Wouldn't buy a Pro ever again.
Know your pain - Glad it's...
Hi there,
I was looking at the Dennerle Scapers Tank 50L.
http://dennerle.com/en/products/aquaristic/aquascaping/tanks/scapers-tank-complete-plus
Whether or not it's a contender I don't know. Just putting it out there.
:)
Murray
Good Morning all,
Life has been a tad hectic to say the least thus a lack of posting for which I apologise.
Tank is going through a period of highs and lows.
I am currently away from home so can't provide any photos at the moment but should be able to do so closer to the weekend.
Here is...
I finally have shrimps!!!
20 RCS - They are on the small side but seem happy in there new home. Due to the layout of the tank its hard to sport many but so far no issues.
Planaria is back will dose Panacur.
Here are some pics:
Tank needs a clean up by myself and the little...
Hi Roly and everyone.
I haven't had much news to report plus real life is a tad crazy at the moment.
I have been away from home for most of the week.
The tank seems to be fine - Minor issues of note:
A decent sized amount of "mould" coming out the wood. Stones turning a slight off brown due...
Hello Everyone,
Thought I would bring you the latest update about the tank.
I purchased some Weeping Moss on 5x5cm mesh from ebay (Fresh Water Shrimp eBay store) They are for perches in the Redmoor Branches.
Also a few hours ago received a delivery of Christmas Moss from George Farmer...
Mini update:
Filter is still anything but quiet. It's a loud constant hum that doesn't change that much only slightly when running full / half or no flow.
It's a vibrating hum is what I would class it as - A bit like an air pump.
I plan on taking another look at it. Was purchased brand new...
Oh no its Murray again........
Hi Roly :)
Just chiming in:
1. Entirely up to you - I personally being a Scot wouldnt spend £30 on a shrimp (but thats just me) - Depends how serious you get into it. Personally I am still wanting to cut my teeth at the lower levels then when the real world...
Dennerle do a shrimp gravel called Sulawesi Black. The inert gravel has grains around 0.7 to 1mm in size from memory .
It's a natural looking black gravel they also do a grey one from memory.
Brief Update:
No sign of Planaria or Nematodes in the tank this morning. There was one floating on the surface so initial impressions are that Planaria and worms are no longer an issue.
Will do a water change Thursday night to keep amonia down from the dead worms (can't see much but better...
Thanks again Paulo! - Appreciated as always.
Panacur purchased - Member of staff was puzzled when asking what animal it was for. "Planaria" :D She was nice about it probably thought another weirdo...
I have dosed 0.6ml into my 60L tank as instructed.
Plan is to order some more weeping moss...
Good Morning all,
Just a wee update for today.
Have had a small outbreak of Planaria / Nematode worms so took about 30L of water out and replaced with fresh. Siphoned up as many of them as I can.
Its very hard to reach to substrate in a lot of places due to the heavy planted and scaped...
Thanks for sharing these journals LDC - Both tanks are very nice indeed. I particularly like the scaping of the new nano.
Lovely looking study :)
Thanks again.
Thanks again everyone will have a look at it tomorrow.
I think it's probably entirely my fault - When priming it I had the outlet pipe in the water so I think it's just full of air bubbles etc.
Will drain it and try again with the outlet out the water see how it goes.
Best wishes,
Murray
Thanks Ady your CRS tank is inspirational. I would love to go for some CRS for this tank just unsure it would work out.
There is a small to medium amount of Seiryu stone in there (say 5KG) so that's not ideal
I think the PH is 7.4 but the test kit is a test kit thus not reliable.
Will...
Morning Folks,
Thanks very much indeed for the replies!
I am sure it's something I am doing wrong - Probably making mistakes with the priming letting far to much air in!
Will empty the canister tomorrow and start again - It's a nice filter just hope it will be quiet.
Had to use ear plugs...
Hello All,
I am in a bit of a pickle - Purchased this filter to hopefully sort out flow rates on my 60L shrimp tank.
It arrived on Saturday - The flow is good the adjustable nozzle is fine but the noise is very Dissapointing.
I didn't expect a machine to be 100% silent but all the user...
I myself and under the impression that say you are fine to buy those initial 10-20 shrimp from the one source.
After time you can source more shrimp to add to the gene pool from different sources thus keeping the stock fresh but the initial batch can be bought entirely from one source...
I am under the impression and hope that the noise settles down a bit as the filter becomes established and run in - 1-2 weeks apparently.
It is a bit loud as it stands at the moment - I have wobbled it gently and there is no more air inside. Its more a vibration / hum noise.
Would probably...
I have uploaded a video
(The noise is probably that of the stabilisation motor on my DSLR)
Will clean the "white mould" from the wood and ive the tank a once over - Suspect another Crypt is on the way out.
Going to investigate some Dwarf Riccia to give the shrimps something to go over...
Good afternoon all.
The external filter arrived today and I have just finished setting it up.
It certainly is well built and the flow rate is very nice - it adds alot of movement to the plans so thats nice to see them swirling around in the current. Wheter or not the shrimp will also be as...
So did I with my brother - It was always very humid - That whole shopping mall area has now been demolished and a big pile of rubble. Used to be a good shop with a nice range but I personally wouldn't bother going back.
Will stick to Discovery Aquatics :)
Hi Derek and welcome to the forum.
Its amazing how helpful and knowledgable the people here are - So don't be afraid to ask any questions.
Journals are a great way to begin your journey - Lots of pics :)
Look forward to seeing you around.
Thanks,
Murray
I have ordered the Eheim 2073 from Amazon.de.
Total cost was £116 which compared to the UK cheapest which is £175 is nice.
Hope it will keep the little guys and girls happy lol :)
Will be a new experience.
Tank is doing fine no melting or algae issues - Have done a 50% WC and dosed the...
Roly,
Apologies for the delay - Yesterday was a tad hectic to say the least.
Here are 4 pics of the filter foam with dimensions in cm.
If you need any help just shout.
Murray
Hi Lindy,
Thats great thanks so much for your help :)
They look really good and should be very handy to have.
Had a look at the filter it seems good but was curious about how I was going to handle the inlet / outlet pipes this glassware seems to be the best way.
Will probably buy the...
Thanks for the info abou the glass lid! :)
This forum never ceases to impress with knowledge and friendly attitudes.
I think I will order the Eheim 2073 for the tank tonight. It seems to cross all the dots etc and is a decent price with enough future proofing to last me for a while hopefully...
Roly the black foam seems to be just standard filter foam from memory.
Just slots into the bottom would be easy to cut a new one from another source and put it in.
If you need measurements just give me a shout :)
Hello Everyone,
I woul very much appreciate some advice on a new external filter for my Dennerle 60L Cube.
Will be use solely go shrimps and is heavily planted (See Journal)
It's dimensions are 43cm tall - 38cm width and depth.
I was informed an my flow rate 150lph was inadequate which I...
I used it in the past and it made a big difference with GH & TDS :)
Have done a bit of research on external filters - Nobody is sure what the future will bring but I enjoy the hobby and given more space and funds it would be nice to get another larger tank.
So being a person that aims to buy...
I will be using Mosura Mineral Plus solution to raise the TDS to around 150-200?
The rock raises the TDS to some extent but will use the solution and measure it with a meter.
Thanks,
Murray
Thanks again for the help with the external filters its all very new to me.
I can see the need for them as when I look at the tank the leaves are basically not moving in the bottom and mid section.
I have has a look around provisionally and like the look of the Eheim 2215 or the JBL...
Hi Squid,
Thanks for the input I did wonder about upgrading to say an Eheim 2213 external filter or similar.
Will need to do my homework I feel - Flow rate is good around the tank but naturally the plants reduce the flow.
Thanks,
Murray
I have just been using one light for 5 hours from 11am to 1pm then 2pm til 5pm.
Have now updated to 10am - 1pm then 2pm til 6pm.
Am not sure if that is better or not :)
Thanks,
Murray
Small update.
Smashed one of the spare Seiryu stones (Beach rock did a perfect job cracking it in 3 just as hoped)
Used the 3 pieces to attach 2 Anubias & 1 Java Fern to using some clear elastic hair bands I got from Morrisons for £2 which made the job very easy.
Had received some Weeping...
Looks good Roly :)
About time you and me both got our tanks set up lol
Redmoor leaches a harmful white mould/tannis as it soaks its fine and nowt to worry about.
I hope the filter wool on the filter works out - We may try that for our two filters instead of Amazon.de :)
Best of luck!
Murray
My plants arrived today from Aqua Essentials :)
I had ordered to much and didnt know what size they would arrive in so it made for some adjustments but overall I am very happy.
Received an Echinodorus Compacta that is about 50cm tall - Alot of plant for £2.99. Need a bigger tank lol
Will...
Thanks for taking the time to chip in everyone - I like the look of CRS but tbh I need a more robust shrimp due to "me" :)
Due to having a Seiryu stone 'overdose' in my new tank I will stick with Sakuras and maybe one day get CRS.
Thanks again for the insight :)
Murray
Hi Clone,
Many thanks for taking the time to chime in with such an in depth reply. Most appreciated!
I have changed the rock layout in the back left corner that gives more space and looks better at the same time.
Am heading to work at the moment so can't upload a pic at the moment.
As for...
Afternoon Everyone,
Hope you are enjoying your weekend so far :)
I have been working on the tank today and have done the following:
Moved the brown gravel away from the front and sides (Was a bit messy on stop of the surface but the sides are neat)
Here is the latest shots - I think it...
Hello Folks,
Just a quick and simple query to ask - Google isn't helping.
If I buy say 10 Sakuras and they breed will the offspring look like Sakura shrimp or Cherry shrimp?
I quite like the intense colour of Sakura but if the offspring tend to look like RCS then I may aswell just buy RCS...
Morning Folks,
Again thanks for the input :) Wish I was at home so I could be making a start on it!
Should be back tomorrow.
Will be nice to see what I can come up with - As im sure your all well aware by now I love Seiryu & Redmoor lol :)
The prices were good - They had normal bogwood...
There was a seller on ebay who was selling Riccia and mesh ( Cant send the link as ebay.co.uk is down)
He took normal flat mesh and a pair of pliers and turned it into what looked like an upside down shopping basket. Then bunged the Riccia in there turned it upside down and placed it in the...
Hi everyone,
Just back from the LFS (Discovery Aquatics in Dundee) with a haul im happy with.
Plan is for when I return on Saturday to move the bulk of th gravel to the middle to try and hide the brown soil then rescape it diagonally as suggested (thanks on both counts!) :)
Then I will add...
Evening Peeps,
Apologies for taking up your time - Your input is certainly appreciated! :)
I am currently away from home for a few days so cant do much to the tank but I will pop along to the LFS and see whats cooking. Will probably sort out the substrate layers and have a look to see what...
Hi Folks,
Thanks as always for the input! :)
I have done alot of "jiggery pokery" around the tank today and have moved the stones around to accommodate moving the wood forward. The wood & rocks take up a lot of space and trying to find the optimum between them and the plants is tough but...
Good Morning Peeps,
Thanks for the input as always :)
I have amended the stones to the following:
(Apologies for the poor pics - Its just provisional work will use the DSLR for proper shots)
I quite like the rocks - The left one is a nice shape but slightly whiter than the rest...
Thanks for the input as always :)
I have removed one of the small stones and flipped the big one on its side creating a taller more striking stone and freeing up more space for plants :)
I wasn't sure about the gravel cap - Tropica bag suggested a minimum of 3-4cm?
Need to keep my...
Hello All,

My previous exploits failed so I emptied the tank and gave it a good preparation clean in preparation for trying again - And here I am.
This is my first ever "fish" tank - I look...
Hello folks,
Firstly many thanks indeed for taking the time out of your day to offer advice - Very much appreciated! :)
I have had a look around and taken the advice onboard coming up with a revised but still not final list. The tank does not have alot of floor space as such with the rocks...
Hi guys thanks for the input.
II did wonder about the HC - falling under the advanced category should have rung alarm bells. I do have a bottle of liquid carbon but tbh would rather just keep it simple (Bought it in my war against algae) Will need to research carpet / non carpet options :)...
Hello,
I would like o ask for some advise regarding planting up my 60L shrimp tank.
I am doing a complete rescape due to failed attempts.
Am trying to get the tank to be as simple and balanced as possible in the past I had problems with algae and dosed liquid carbon and things didn't end...

You can use all the details from your Amazon.co.uk account - No need to create a new one.

Its exactly like using Amazon UK - You can try and use this live translator...
Nice haul you got there :)
I have used the EBI Gold substrate for when I attempted CRS. Quite a ncie substrate I am ripping it out and replacing it with Dennerle Sulawesi black gravel I have coming from Amazon.de (9 Euro Postage)
I also ordered some of the filters pads for you corner filter...
Hi Peeps,
Hope you are all well and had a nice weekend.
In the past 2 hours I have removed 3 more dead shrimp from the tank with a cracked rear shell (down to at most 5 shrimp) I have decided to completely redo the tank from the ground up to try and get back to sustainable habitat.
I do...
Thank you for the pointers Lindy - Will look into them :)
Performed some maintenance on the tank tonight - So far no more deaths to note. Shrimp dont seem to be zooming about so much just standing on a rock etc.
TDS is 157 - I keep the air stone on until I get ready for bed then it comes on...

Hello Roly,
Hope you are well and thanks for the comment!
Germany seems to be much more shrimp orientated than in the UK.
Another good source for ordering bits is (Cant work out how to link properly) :)

Wow that certainly shows what you can do with a bit of imagination.
Hope the little ones approve :D
Well done on the result :)
Thank you for sharing this - Impressive!
Hi Trio,
The tank is looking very nice - Thats some really good looking slate you have there! I really like the layout of it!
Will be nice to se how it spreads out :)
Thanks for sharing.
I like taking photographs - Helps clear the mind I feel :)
Normally anything with swirly water is my true calling :D
Just use long exposure of around 30" using a dark filter.
Murray
Hi Roly,
A few minor pointers for you if you are interested:
Dennerle Spares and pads for the filter can be expensive in the UK - An option is to import them and other fish bits from Amazon.de the shipping is £5 for the entire order regardless of size.
Mosura Products are very good for CRS...
:)
Yeah its confusing me also - I do a 10L water change once a week. I am due a water change but thought it might be worth waiting and seeing what happens with the new parameters.
Tank TDS as of this afternoon is 163 & GH is now 10 after dosing the Mosura Mineral Plus so that seems to be more...

Hi justisaayman & tim.
Substrate is just short of 2 inches deep all over - I do not use spray aerosols in the house as I am scared from what I have read about the damage it may cause the shrimps :)
I have received some Mosura BT-9 / Old Sea Mud Powder & Mineral Plus Ultra and have dosed them...
Hi Everyone,
Came home from work to find a shrimp dying - Clearly in alot of trouble swimming backwards upside down.
This is the 3rd death in a row where the shrimp has looked like it has broken its shell behind its head as it has a white line where a gap between the front and rear of the...
Hi Folks - Hope your all well!
Again thanks for taking the time to chime in to the journal. Your comments are most welcomed!

I am daily dosing 1ml of Flourish Excel & 1 Pump...
Hi there,
My girlfriend bought some of this Java Wood for her pet lizards - We soaked it to clean it up and it did leak some tannis - The smell it gave off was bad (Seems to be a trait with this wood?)
I did investigate it for my shrimp tank but decided against and would try and opt for some...
