    Swell Limpopo Black Sand

I have used it (a large bag purchased from local Maidenhead Aquatics). It's pretty nice, more of a grey than black, sort of salt and peppery appearance. The grain size is quite fine (~0.5mm), so compaction might become an issue, I'm not sure much water transferral is getting through to the soil...

    Growing Lilaeopsis NZ (HELP needed)

Hello. I run a RIO 180 with T5 lighting and am growing Lileaopsis NZ. 180L Jungle Thingymajig? - First Attempt

One year update. The tank has a shoal of 11 celestial pearl danio and now also 2 sunset honey gourami. The Amazon swords died, the new leaves were pale and translucent so I suspect that there wasn't enough co2 considering the light levels. The dwarf sag is basically in stasis, perhaps my water...

    Should I start again?

The Rio 180 with T5 lighting is a bloody nightmare, far too much light. I have the same tank and an upturned reflector blocking the light from one of the bulbs is the main thing that helped to get the tank into balance.

Calcium Deficiency? White snail shells & shrimp

Ah ha a vital clue! I hadn't thought about it this way in that the tank water must be acidic (at times) in order to dissolve existing shell that has built up. I wonder what is causing that temporary drop, possibly the leaf litter I threw in recently. I was hoping you would jump into this...

Calcium Deficiency? White snail shells & shrimp

I use an API Master Test Kit so no calibration involved. 17. AshRolls

Calcium Deficiency? White snail shells & shrimp

I also wondered if the tank was acidic eating at the shells because I have driftwood, leaf litter etc in there which could drop it from the tannins, but I tested the tank to check for a ph drop and it is still sitting at 7.6 (give or take a bit for test kit inaccuracy).
  18. AshRolls

Calcium Deficiency? White snail shells & shrimp

Both, the buffers don't wear off so the tap water remains at 7.6 even when left to stand (or in tank). Water quality report from SWW states Min 7.30, Mean 7.71, Max 7.90. So it doesn't actually state what method they use to increase alkalinity, assuming they even do and the reservoir that...
  19. AshRolls

Calcium Deficiency? White snail shells & shrimp

Wouldn't this raise the alkalinity as well? Is it even possible to raise the KH without raising the alkalinity? Considering I'm already at 7.6 this is a concern unless I have misunderstood the chemistry here.

Calcium Deficiency? White snail shells & shrimp

I live in a very soft water area here in Cornwall so I use Seachem Equiliberium to remineralise the GH of tap water. I wonder if large water changes and shrimp sensitivity are down to the natural tap water of an area.
