thanks alexander. I have eco complete substrate so that shouldnt be to much of a problem.
thanks for the encouragement. I think I will buy some new plants and rocks and see how that goes!
will post some photos when its done...
Hi all
was posting on here a while ago and was more active in the hobby.
due to family illnesses and the like I have been away from my house for a good while and neglected my tank.
my dear wife has done her best with water changes etc but things are bad...
while some of the plants are still...
too true, I was suckered in by a cheap price and getting some limophilia aromatica which is a stunning plant but seems difficult to come by.
hey ho I wont go off reservation again :)
not been on here for a while but new babies and work have got in the way of my hobbies
so with a spring in my step I fancied getting my tank back into some kind of shape as it had been neglected bar water changes since the birth of the little one.
so pre xmas I ordered some limophilia...
amazing
there is no way in a million billion years I could ever get something like this past the wife
we need more pictures of it in situ!!
i would much rather have this in my wall than a TV
cheers gary. I do think the shape of the trigon makes a jungle type scape easier. a more minimal scape like yours is much harder to achieve successfully. That is my next goal with this tank, but I am enjoying the scape at the moment and am a bit too busy for a complete strip down.
how much is more than enough light?
and how big is your tank?
Like foxfish says "more than enough" is too much
free your mind from the wpg mantra trotted out by manufacturers of expensive lighting systems.
you need to concentrate on providing enough carbon and nutrients to grow a carpet...
I dispensed with test kits, planted heavy and did regular water changes and waited for 8 weeks before stocking.
No fish losses
no obsessing over test results and a happy healthy tank.
EI DOSING USING DRY SALTS | UK Aquatic Plant Society
have a read of this thread which explains EI dosing with dry salts there is a little bit of a learning curve getting the head around the concepts but it is cheap and easy once you understand
TNC EI Kits : FluidsensorOnline.com, The...
when you talk about temperature I am assuming you are referring to colour temperature.
there are several good posts on here discussing this
the short answer is that broadly speaking colour temperature makes little difference other than how the plants look
Spectrum...doesn't matter...does...
I would respectfully suggest that you shouldn't waste money on new lighting till you have the Co2 and fertilizer situation under control.
A good analogy would be that lighting acts as the accelerator in a car. the CO2 and ferts act as chassis and fuel of the car
the more light you add into a...
I second what Ceg has said.
I didn't realise that many of my fish were supposed soft water fish
I just use local tap water which is very very hard
my fish are fine with weekly 50% water changes
this is a bit of a how long is a piece of string question...
are you going to have pressurised CO2?
the TMC grobeams and grotiles are good as they can be controlled with the aquaray controller
Control
I would prefer a yearly donation
but in principle yes I get a lot out of this forum and would gladly give something back.
but would prefer if it was anonymous as not to have a divide between donators and none
I plan to pummel the plants with as much Co2 as I can get in there for about 5-6 weeks while the tank cycles before adding livestock then a gradual dial back on the co2 levels till it is hospitable for the critters
but all suggestions are gratefully received...
have a look at the TMC grotiles with a aquaray controller.
the controller allows good management of the intensity which is the cause of much woe in high tech tanks...
The MMC mounting system means that you can screw into the hood or suspend over the top as you prefer.
measured the output from the peristaltic pumps bang on 30ml per pump! its dosing this once a day at 4 o clock
there is an electronic timer and clock which allows a variable dose once a day
the dual pump was a bargain from ebay £40 I am well pleased
now for some auto water changer action...
I would appreciate some advice:
the Amazon swords on the right are starting to take over this tank... Can someone suggest a replacement plant that has a similar leaf shape that is not quite as virulent.
I am also not happy with the Pogostemon stellatus on the rear left. A suggestion for...
having started from scratch recently here are a few considerations from a noob perspective
read all of Cegs posts about CO2/EI dosing as this really is the key to success
EI DOSING USING DRY SALTS | UK Aquatic Plant Society
CO2 MEASUREMENT USING A DROP CHECKER | UK Aquatic Plant Society...
is there an obvious disadvantage to using an all in one mix vs macro/micro mixes?
I have built a dual peristaltic pump and would like to automate dosing, but would have to shift from using macro and micro mixes and liquid carbon, to all in one and liquid carbon.
using EI principles is it...
in my limited experience it does depend on the plant.
I have 2 corys and they made merry mischief with the HC when I attempted to plant that.
the dwarf hairgrass seems to have been abit more resilient to their rooting.
something like blyxa japonica could work and makes a nice carpet if...
thanks mate
I am hacking my way through the jungle this afternoon so hopefully things will look a little neater soon
I am getting the impression that planted tanks reflect a lot of the owners (hence why mine is such a mess!)
I am going to attempt a go at one of these.
I was wondering if it would be possible to inject ferts into this via peristaltic pumps thus getting all pipes other than inflow and outflow out of the tank?
sorry for the poor quality
any thoughts on best way to deal with this? I have turned up the co2 as far as I can. I have cleaned filter and done a 50% water change
I am double dosing liquid carbon
anything else?
urgh really struggling with a white fluffy algae on the moss and the wood around the moss.
I have cleaned filter done a partial water change turned up the co2 to maximum
good work fella
it takes a bit of time to get used to the pace of growth in a new tank (well it does for impatient buggers like me)
but once you become accustomed to it I found myself surprised by how quickly things can grow
this is what I used
Buy Solenoid Valves 2/2 way solenoid valve,1/8in port 230Vac Burkert 134094 online from RS for next day delivery.
excellent service from RS I damaged one wiring it up wrong and they sent one out to me foc for next day delivery.
a minor alteration after some sage words on here
Jack sent me some lovely plants which are very happy at the front left and the blyxa is starting to recover
I have it propped on a shelf up at the moment so it shouldnt fall over.
I am getting a monster 10kg cylinder that will fit in a cupboard which will not fall over
i have recently added lots of blyxa to my tank
I have already grown some successfully its nice and green and happy.
this batch has been put in next to it but is massively melting...
is it likely to recover once its adapted to the new tank?
added lots of blyxa today which is looking a bit scruffy as you would expect there is a marked contrast in green between the new bits and the stuff that has been there a while.
starting to feel a little bit more settled with this tank.
I feel that perhaps some wood on the right might balance...
plants
Tropica Hemianthus 'Cuba' 1-2-GROW!
Pogostemon helferi
Tropica Staurogyne repens 1-2-GROW!
once submersed I will add some blyxa
Hardscape
some mini landscape rocks
Filtration (to be added)
fluval 305 (turned right down)
Lighting
Ikea 3 w clipon led.
CO2
disposable Co2 setup
