Did anyone get any good fish/plant related presents?

Got one of those brine shrimp hatcheries you screw a pop bottle into. Has already been named the shrimp lava lamp There is no spoon.

I spotted that and found this: Trophies | UK Aquatic Plant Society Still none the wiser, of course. There is no spoon.

Welcome! I'm sure the good people on this forum will soon have you swapping those plastic plants for real ones.

    Our School's Walstad Bowls.

Truly inspirational teaching there. The journal entry also shows just how much they understand already. Well done kids and well done teacher(s). Only trouble is my (year 4) 8 year old daughter wants one, too. She's already surveying the house for a likely spot and it's all your fault!

    R.O Filtration

My reply was to the post suggesting that you use the waste water for other purposes. 700l is how much waste water you would need to find a use for each week. You'd either need to store it or use it as it was generated, which is a big ask if you're going to "save" water by using RO.

    R.O Filtration

If you have a decent sized tank you'd need truly epic amounts of storage. Considering the size of the OP's tank and assuming "standard" 50% weekly changes and an optimistic 5:1 rejection rate he'd need to find storage for over 700l a week. If you had that much storage you'd be better off...

    Guppies strange behaviour

Guppies are farmed on a vast scale and as a result of much inbreeding many of the guppies available in shops seem susceptible to just about every ailment there is. Most guppies are nowhere near hardy! In common with most of the poeciliidae family they "naturally" hail from hard water areas.

    Working guage for UP A-165

It also looks like the rear of the needle is catching on the face of the gauge, which is why it won't go back to zero. I'd ask for a replacement.

NO3, PO4 and the case of the Reef Tank fiction as fact.

I'm sure quite a lot of "reefers" use planted, lit, sumps for removal of excess nutrients. I considered a reef tank a few years ago and there was much talk of mangrove roots, miracle mud and macro algae (caulerpa prolifera) at the time.

Water flow in the planted aquarium?

I'm reluctant to appear as a pedant, but what actually happens is an increase in fluid velocity as the cross sectional area of the orifice decreases. There may be some reduction in flow and pressure, but these will be due to losses from friction e.t.c. Water is largely incompressible so as the...

    Blacklisted from tapatalk

A lot of providers IP's are dynamic, so unblocking will only work for a while. The IP you appear to be posting from may well change, getting you blacklisted again. I know little about forum management but I suspect it's possible to tell tapatalk to ignore the blacklisting database. No idea...

Me too - can read forum posts, but I can't post from tapatalk due to being blacklisted. Who knows? I'm assuming there's a database somewhere that my IP's on for reasons unfathomable.

    Help with LED lighting/Engineering problem?

You mentioned it was for a class - are you at a school? If so is there a d&t/resistant materials department that could bend a bit of acrylic into a sloping z shape for you? You'd need to play around with the angles but you should be able to hook the z over the edge of the bowl and have a bit...

My first ever aquarium. Juwel Rio 180l

How odd. I'd be tempted to let it be at present. Any attempt at treatment might stress the fish and cause more problems.

My first ever aquarium. Juwel Rio 180l

A few questions about the spot: Has it changed size or appearance? Have more appeared? Does the fish appear stressed or is it rubbing against plants or hard scape?

Thanks Clive, A truly fascinating and informative reply. I'm always amazed at the diversity and adaptability of both the flora and fauna that we keep.

    Any advice welcome

Now that's interesting. I had been told by a chap that had kept aquariums for a very long time that vallis "used" the KH to grow, but he was never able to explain to me why or how. Is this a "default" behaviour for plants such Vallis - i.e. will it use this process to convert bicarbonate to...

    Any advice welcome

Most of the Tanganyikan cichlids available couldn't care less about the plants in the tank, and any plants tend to be for the pleasure of the fishkeeper. Of the most commonly kept only the Tropheus are particularly herbivorous. The rest are pretty much carnivorous, and only damage plants if they...

Easy carbo, generic or cheaper equivalent?

If you don't want to knit your own, and given the chemical involved I can see why, a number of our sponsors offer generic versions. I'm using the TNC stuff and it works fine.

    FE CO2

I'm sold on the "concealed remote cylinder" option. Might even install while she's out and see how long it takes for it to be noticed.

If you do find a "stubby" solution please share - I have the same problem and the suggestion of an FE outside of the cabinet is falling on stony ground with the domestic authorities.

You could just keep it in it's standard bottle and dose with a syringe. If appearance is a real issue I'm sure you could find an aesthetically pleasing syringe - there must be some old fashioned glass ones available?

    Self build acryllic tank

The trick with butt joining laser cut acrylic is to use the right adhesive. The "pecking" action that most lasers use introduces lots of fine imperfections. Cyanoacrylate tends to work into the imperfections, where it expands as it cures. The cracks form almost explosively. There are resin...

Iwagumi to Natural Tank + Video (First Journal)

From a purely aesthetic viewpoint I'd be cautious of producing a neatly manicured lawn in front of that rather splendid "chaos" in the background. Perhaps you could trim it in a suitably natural manner?

Iwagumi to Natural Tank + Video (First Journal)

I honestly couldn't say if it improves growth rates. I'm sure someone who knows more than I will answer that one for you. I'd guess it wouldn't hurt, though. I do know that trimming hair grass in the tank does create a lot of mess - I was chasing 1/2 inch long bits of grass around the tank for...

Iwagumi to Natural Tank + Video (First Journal)

That's really growing in, isn't it? The difference between the photos of the initial planting and the tank in it's current form make a very nice contrast. I'm a fan of the natural look to a planted tank. I bet the livestock love it, too.

    Winter Water Change Acceptable temp

And a quick search of this forum reveals all manner of cunning solutions involving pumps and hosepipes that mean you don't end up carrying those Jerry cans around the house. I've used those big brewing buckets in the past and dropping 25l of water on the floor when the handle breaks does not...

    Winter Water Change Acceptable temp

Of course, if you don't want to use the hot tap you can use a kettle to boil some water before mixing in a bucket. Don't go near your tank with a kettle of boiling water! The water temp is so much higher than your mains water you don't need much to increase the temperature of your tap water...

    Feeding fish

I feed my fish when I remember! I reckon that 99.9% of freshwater fish keepers over feed their fish. Precious few "standard" fish starve to death. They would certainly be lucky to find a meal twice a day, every day in the wild. I'd suggest you feed them to a routine that suits you and...

Hi Topkat, I'm new here but the inner maths teacher couldn't resist  . Your tank is 190 litres. Assuming you want to work in good 'ole imperial gallons your tank is around 41 gallons. If your American it's 50. WPG seems to be a "rule of thumb" rather than an exact science so I wouldn't...

Power head with cables outside of tank?

Ah ha! It's the Vortech I'd seen before. And definitely has a price tag that suggests that 1 more wire in the tank is not THAT much of an issue. Anyone have a link for the Hydor version? Only ones I can find are the Koralias which look to have the wires inside the tank?

Power head with cables outside of tank?

Thanks -at least I know I haven't lost my marbles. I honestly can't remember where I saw them - wouldn't have been the last PFK 'cos I haven't read an issue for about 9 months. It would have been a shiny add somewhere designed to attract the inner magpie, though.

Power head with cables outside of tank?

Hello good people, Around 18 months ago I seem to remember seeing an advert for a circulation pump that had all of the cables and motor outside of the tank. I'm assuming that it had a magnetic coupling that then turned the impeller inside the tank. I also remember them being rather expensive...
