    My journey so far :)

Tank is broken down at the min. Lack of time with having a 6 month old baby boy :). Hoping to set up again in summer. Already missing it :(

Just how much C02 do you use!

I'll have a measure up for you tomorrow pal and I'll send you a message. Size your after is VB. Sure my cabinet is 80cm and it gets in there but I'll double check tomorrow for ya ;)

    Need some plant advice.

Hi guys, came home today to find a few bits of dead leaves knocking about. So had a look and a hell of a lot of the crypts at the back of the tank had melted. Probably due to the bigger ones overshadowing them. Anyway, my tank is minging now. Crap floating about all over the place. So...

What type of fish is this?

I've had a look at the Ricefish pics on net. Mine looks a bit darker. But I do know that the LFS where I got it from stocked Ricefish, so I must have got a free stowaway lol. It's lasted at least 10 months on its own now lol.

What type of fish is this?

Hi guys, I bought some fish a while ago and this little fella was among them. Only have this one and seems to be doing great. Just don't know what it is. Also for some reason I cannot post a new topic in the fish section.

    Big clean day tomorrow :(

Haha. No all done by then. Nice and clean and good flow now :). Decided wanted to change some plants and wood now though lol

    Now red plant wanted.

Hi guys, long time no see. Tank is doing great at min. No problems, everything settled and growing nicely :). At the min I think it looks a bit green. I would like to replace the plant in the rear left corner. Mainly because my Gourami is eating it and killing the stems. Also thinking of...

Just how much C02 do you use!

Bloody hell. I'm using a BOC 5kg cylinder with gas on for 6 hours a day at a bubble rate faster than I can count. This going into a reactor chamber. I started using this very beginning of January. It's still going strong! Drop checker is always lime green :) Forgot to say, it's a 180L tank.
  12. Martin cape

    Big clean day tomorrow :(

It normally would be. 11 week old baby has changed that lol. Plus the mrs nagging ha
  13. Martin cape

    Big clean day tomorrow :(

Big clean day tomorrow. Cleaning all the external tubing, reactor, heater and filter. All powerheads and external filter. Attaching some Eheim taps to the tubing. Then cleaning the glass, changing 50% water and having a trim. Anyone else have plans? That's my Saturday :(

    Skin on the surface

Is it not light that is the main driving force behind nutrient and co2 demand? Surely just because there is more food and co2 about doesn't mean it would try to use any more? Assuming light intensity and photoperiod remains the same? Im probably wrong lol.
  15. Martin cape

    Skin on the surface

Reason I don't want to fire loads of nitrates in is that over a certain level they can affect the fish can't they?
  16. Martin cape

    Skin on the surface

Thanks Clive, I can increase surface agitation by aiming spray bar and powerheads slightly higher up. But interesting about the expulsion of lipids. Should I try increasing EI dosing by 10%? CO2 is at its higher limit now really.
  17. Martin cape

    Skin on the surface

Never seen it as thick is today but could be just I'm a day overdue on water change. All the co2 bubbles or glute bubbles were trapped in it. I just broke it up with my fingers and its free flowing again now :)
  18. Martin cape

    Skin on the surface

Yep. It's the second one not the first. It does easily break. It's due a water change today but I've been badly so have to change tomorra. That always clears it.
  19. Martin cape

    Skin on the surface

Hi guys, Came home today to find a skin on the surface of the water. I get that cloudy haze on the surface but its solidified today. I had to break it up to get rid. Was like a thin rice pudding skin. Never seen anything like it. Is it just a protein film?

    Does glute react with EI?

I've seen it once a while ago but thought it was a reaction between calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate making virtually insoluble calcium carbonate. I changed all the water that day lol.
  26. Martin cape

    Does glute react with EI?

    It's gone now :)
  27. Martin cape

    Does glute react with EI?

Yea I used tap water pal. Thing is I always use tap water, always do 50%. It's strange.
  28. Martin cape

    Does glute react with EI?

Hi guys, Changed water today and added macro straight after. Then I added glute fairly close to adding the macro. Can these 2 react if they are not properly dispersed? My water has gone cloudy.
  29. Martin cape

    New lights!!

Haha. Yea it was closed. But I tell you something. I've just topped the water back up to the max line. I've lost 4 litres in 4 days with it being open topped!!

    Glutaraldehyde!

Looks like just have to dose more eh. Does excel or any glute kill the BBA on the leaf edges? Or do they need cut off?
  31. Martin cape

    Glutaraldehyde!

There is definitely something else in Excel other than glute. I made up some 3% glute solution and dosed to double a normal Excel dose. I have a couple of little tufts of BBA. Nothing happened to them. Waited a couple days for glute to decompose. Bought some Excel, double dosed that...
  32. Martin cape

    New lights!!

They are good for the price. I thought build quality would be a bit better. The Perspex bulb cover is just a thin flimsy with of acrylic. Reflector is just held in behind bulbs by the bulbs. I took that out to have less light. Overall I'd recommend. It now stands about 6 inch higher than...
  33. Martin cape

    New lights!!

I started off with about 15 plantlets from a guy on here. I've since separated a couple to get the look I have. Maybe about 20 in there now. They have grown a look bigger since I put them in mind you. Really I could do with up rooting and separating some. I don't like interfering though lol.
  34. Martin cape

    New lights!!

Cheers pal :). Just dosed some Excel today too the clear things up a bit. Had to turn co2 down a little before. Drop checker was yellow! Maybe take plants a while to adjust to new lights. Sod's law though. Got light delivered. Got 2 left hand brackets! Not a right and left. Had to contact...
  35. Martin cape

    New lights!!

Just fit these today. What ya think? Nowhere near as bright as my Juwel T5's. I have taken the reflectors off too so as light isn't as intense. This was it with Juwel:
  36. Martin cape

    Is this BBA?

Hi guys, I hate this bloody BBA. Is this it on my Staurogyne? This is a video of the flow and co2 level
  37. Martin cape

    What power head to get?

There are some that use magnets and the wire is outside the tank. Can't remember off top of my head the brand. But they cost about £200 each. I use Koralia Nano's and Newave. Both are excellent. If I had to choose a preference. The Newave ones are better.
  38. Martin cape

    Glutaraldehyde!

Not yet pal. Need to make up a new stock this weekend so going to make it up to 3%. I've noticed though, dosing this DIY flute up to round about 8ppm has no effect on BBA. Whereas excel kills it at just a double dose. There's definitely something else in there other than glute.
  39. Martin cape

    Which this light unit help?

I've just had a larl clear out of the leaves with black edges. I had covered one bulb to see if that helped. But, fish were gasping. Plants weren't producing enough oxygen for them. CO2 level was too high I think. Not enough being used I would say.
  40. Martin cape

    Which this light unit help?

It's getting annoying now. I keep getting BBA on the edges of my crypts, Anubis leaves and HC stems. Everything is moving in the flow, drop checker is a nice lime green colour and the light is only on for 5 hours a day. EI dosing is takin place as well. I don't know what I can do. I'm spoiling...
  41. Martin cape

    Which this light unit help?

Yea it's 4dKH in there pal. I don't think it can be raised and lowered. I think it's in a fixed position but 4-5 inches higher than my current bulbs. I like the idea of open top as I've just got some lily bulbs growing :)
  42. Martin cape

    Which this light unit help?

My co2 level is fine. Drop checker is like green all the time when lights are on and I have 3 power heads spreading the flow. I can't do anything else regards flow and co2 :(. Only leaves light really.
  43. Martin cape

    Which this light unit help?

It would give me more versatility with the tubes I could use would it not? Normal 39w tubes can be bought for as little as a fiver lol
  44. Martin cape

    Which this light unit help?

Light is only on for 5 hours now. Only thing I was thinking was new one will be 12w overall less. Plus it will be about 4 inches higher than at min.
  45. Martin cape

    Which this light unit help?

Hi guys, I want to replace my standard Juwel T5 light unit (2x 45w bulbs) with this one, an All Pond Solutions light unit with 2x 39w bulbs which will be raised above the tank. T5 Fish Tank Lights Two Bulbs - All Pond Solutions Both units are same length but the All Pond one has built in...

    Algae and light?

Thanks Clive. It's just annoying when "you think" everything is right, as in doing what everyone else seems to do, and you still fail :(. I'll double my phosphate dose and see what happens. I've more than doubled my flow today so that can only help too. In the process of replacing my light...

    Algae and light?

Cheers Clive. I do know there is 6 ppm in there. I use Ion Chromatography to test. It's maybe just that its not getting down to substrate level? I watched the flow from the side yesterday when loads of bubbles were moving about, it came horizontally out the spray bar, along the surface, then...
  53. Martin cape

    Algae and light?

Hi guys, Can you get algae from not enough lighting time? I keep getting green spot algae which is apparently due to low phosphates but I know for a fact I have enough phosphate. 6ppm. Flow seems fine too across the glass I'm getting it. It's all at substrate level. Lights are only on for...
  54. Martin cape

    Is my understanding wrong?

Had me confused for a while too lol. Diffuser I used to run about 3bps and got the nice green colour. Now with the reactor I cannot count the bubbles, must be 6 plus. And it's on 4 hours before lights on lol.
  55. Martin cape

    Is my understanding wrong?

I had this too when I moved to a reactor from diffuser. But, I think with the diffusers there are loads of little bubbles floating about which will directly go into the drop checker and pop. Resulting in a false reading as there is more going in there than actually in the water. Your...

    Lighting

I have the same size tank roughly. My lights are on for 5 hours a day and I only have 90w of light compared with your 144w!!! Think you should start with 5 hours max and look to half the light.
  57. Martin cape

    Black HC stems and leaves

I'll try. I'll just have to watch the fish response. Thanks :)
  58. Martin cape

    Black HC stems and leaves

Yea I can't measure potassium unfortunately but I do dose the same amount as nitrate. It seems weird. Flow seems to be fine also as the water flows right over that area from the spray bar :(
  59. Martin cape

    Black HC stems and leaves

Last time I checked iron it was above 1ppm. That's enough isn't it pal? I know phosphate is around 5ppm too. I do get a lot of green spot algae along the glass just above the substrate level. That's down to low phosphate too but EI aim is 2-3ppm. I'm confused.
  60. Martin cape

    Black HC stems and leaves

Just sand substrate. This is one stem but its dotted about everywhere I dose EI and this is where HC is
  61. Martin cape

    Black HC stems and leaves

Anyone have any idea why some of the stems and leaves on my HC are going black? Looks kinda like algae but surely it can't be.

    Staurogyne Repens

Should I cut just below the roots that seem to be sprouting?
  63. Martin cape

    Staurogyne Repens

Hi guys, got some of this growing fairly well now. I know it propagates by runners (least I think it does). Is it ok to give it a trim and re plant the tops? It's quite tall now but wanted to leave it till the roots bedded in.

    Crypt question

They are under the spray bar yea but they are swaying nicely.
  73. Martin cape

    Crypt question

Cheers guys. I have to disagree with changes in co2 etc, as only thing that's changed is plant has been uprooted and replanted. Nothing else has been touched, co2, ferts and lights.

    Crypt question

Cheers pal. Just depressing seeing the really nice big coloured leave slowly dropping off :(
  75. Martin cape

    Crypt question

Hi guys, I had a rescape a coupe weeks ago so I uprooted all my crypts, and replanted. Now I think they are melting. The leaves are curling up and dropping off. I've heard they can do that when they are moved. Will they recover? Plenty ferts in there same as before and they were thriving so...

    Water barrel idea over!!

Funny you should mention conductivity. I analyse that at work. Deionised water has a conduct of 0.5 microSiemens. Never tested the tap water in the lab though. Only thing that concerns me with the rain water, is the ammonia in there. Thought that was really strange. Don't fancy adding it to...

    Water barrel idea over!!

    Glutaraldehyde!

    I think with shrimp your only safe to go to 1ppm. So rearranging formula for 2% Glute and 35 L aiming for 1 ppm is: ((1 x 35) / 20000) x 1000 = 1.75ml
  84. Martin cape

    Glutaraldehyde!

I use far worse chemicals at work lol. I know I've washed my hands in worse over the years lol :)

    Phosphate level.

Only reason I ask is I check it at work using a bit of kit so I know its very accurate. No colour scales lol. I'm going to be using rain water soon anyway so ill have to add it then. Was just curious as to whether, as you say, "phosphate is phosphate" and all forms are adequate for plants :)
  86. Martin cape

    Phosphate level.

Hi guys, My tap water had a phosphate level of 3ppm. This is ideal as far as dosing is concerned. But is it the same type of phosphate as what we add as ferts? At 3ppm I shouldn't need to dose anymore should I?

Can't believe how they multiply. They do keep sand clean etc, but there's just so many lol. Do assassin snails eat plants though? I could easy get hold of 1 or 2. Don't want to eradicate them, just reduce numbers a bit lol.

Yea. I seen they sell the suspended ones. But looked like they only supported the 4,6 or 8 tubes.

Can by normal T5 bulbs too. Instead of bloody Juwel ones!!
  95. Martin cape

    Anyone used this?

Haha. Well it can only help me. It will be combined 12W lower and lights would be about 6cm higher.

  97. Martin cape
