    Hygrophila difformis palm trees...

Anyone know whats happened to my Hygrophila difformis?! They've all turned into palm trees 😂 The tank is a lido 120 so its 60cm deep so wondered if it was a light issue due to the t5s not penetrating to the bottom of the tank?

    Frogbit deficiency

Hi Darrel I was hoping you'd be along with your frogbit expertise! 😄 Thanks for the reply. Wondered if you might say something like that. Reducing T5 lighting

Thanks for the replies. Cant raise it unfortunately as its built into the hood. Floating plants does seem like an obvious option but they seem to struggle in that tank for some reason. May be due to too much surface movement but I'm not sure

    Reducing T5 lighting

Hi all, I recently replaced the two T5 bulbs in my tank for new ones as they were so old. However, since then I'm getting getting quite a bit of algea growth (its low tech so no co2). Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas how to reduce the brightness of these new bulbs? I don't have the...

    Is this BBA?

I'll try and get rid of all the melted leaves. Filters and sponges cleaned with the weekly water change along with vacuuming the gravel. Substrate is ada amazonia topped with gravel, it is very old now though. Prob 8 years ish! Flow still seems good and power head cleaned also. I'm in the...

    Is this BBA?

Not the best image but gives you an idea of tank. Lots of floaters also which aren't visible.

    Is this BBA?

Unfortunately no liquid carbon available. Its a juwel lido 120 (depth 55cm) Built in filter and media (4x sponges 1x bio) 2x T5 24w (no reflectors) 8hrs daily Low tech (no co2) EI dosing, 10ml macro, 10ml trace per week 50% weekly water change the last 4 week, prior to that hit and miss...

OK thanks, going to start with a blackout then drop the lightning down to 5 hours and see if that helps.

Don't know if it helps but these are the floodlights that mark uses at MD fishtanks https://www.amazon.co.uk/V-TAC-Waterproof-Outdoor-Security-Floodlight/dp/B079LLRQ2Q Video of one of his tanks using them here

    Seachem Flourish

Well there's no harm in trying the seachem stuff if it's not going to cost you. It's expensive for what it is though so if you are planning on continuing to dose fertilisers look at buying a starter kit from one of the sponsors. It's really easy to make up and dose and costs a fraction of the...

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking along the right lines then due to creating excess pollution. I wasn't sure if there was something more to it that I hadn't thought of.

    Dosing and fish health

I've not tried upping my dosing yet as I wanted to make sure it was safe to do so first It's a low tech tank, currently just dosing 5ml of npk and 5ml trace weekly using the apf starter kit dosing.

    Dosing and fish health

Hi all, I've been trying to see if there are any threads regarding dosing nutrients and fish health but with no luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Bit of a noob question but I'm trying to find out if overdosing of npk or trace will affect fish? Many thanks

    Is my lighting to much?

I agree, my main effort is too fix the root of the problem anyway. I'll hold off adding anything until I have sorted the algae issues.

    Is my lighting to much?

    Is my lighting to much?

Right, I've had a really good clean of the tank and filter. I have also added an extra power head, covered one of my T5 tubes and removed the affected leaves. Below are some pictures of the leaves before I removed them. Do these look like the types of algae that I mentioned? Many thanks.

    Is my lighting to much?

Oh dear! Well thanks for all the info. For starters I think a good clean, removal of the reflectors and lighting reduction are in order then. I'll definitely look at adding some more plants too before increasing the lighting period.

    Is my lighting to much?

It looks to me like there could be a few varieties of algae unfortunately. GDA, GSA and some sort of hair algae. Does this help at all?

    Is my lighting to much?

Sorry having a dumb moment, why would increasing plant mass help? Thanks

    Is my lighting to much?

Thanks all! Lee, that's a helpful post. I think it could be a case of having a play with some of the variables to see what results I get. I may start with removing the reflectors and see if that helps. I'm not too sure how long I should leave it to see if things improve, a few weeks maybe?
  31. Mikeyd

    Is my lighting to much?

Sorry I should have mentioned its not a new set up. The reason I was asking is that I am having some algea issues so am trying to think about possible causes. I'm noticing that there tends to be less gda and gsa on the glass of the higher flow areas of the tank.

    Is my lighting to much?

Hi, I have a Juwel lido 120 which is almost 2ft deep with 2x24w t5 bulbs and reflectors. What are people's opinions in my lighting levels, too much for low tech? They are on for 6 hours per day at the minute. Thanks Mike

    Opinions on yeast

Looks like you've manged to get a decent DIY set up there. Can I ask, what recipe/measurements do you use for the mix if you're changing the bottles every three days? Thanks

Second the eBay route. Obviously the more expensive ones in the shops are going to better quality but the ones I got off eBay are good value. Tenner for curved scissors and tweasers delivered. Seller I got mine from is 6direct.

    Rotala Wallichii?

    Java fern disintegrating

Hi all, I recently split my java fern plantlets and repositioned them in the tank. I read that it was ok to trim the roots as they had got a bit unsightly. However, the ones I did not trim are looking fine but the ones that I trimmed are disintegrating and the planlets are pretty much gone...

    best non co food suppliment

Hi, just a quick question. I was looking at this kit and your motioned only using a 10th of the quantity the manufacturer recommends. Is that because its a non co2 tank? I have a 110l low tech non co2. Regards mike

    Plants improved, but how?

The lights were left as normal, 8 hours a day, 2x24w t5's. The only other thing I thought of was that I added reflectors about 5 days before I went away. Maybe less frequent water changes are the answer then? Reference gassing of co2 my filter outlet points at the surface, should I lower it a...

    Plants improved, but how?

Well I did wonder that so checked them, normal readings are 5ppm but after 3 weeks away 0ppm!! Guess that's because the food block didn't work so very little waste was created.

    Plants improved, but how?

Hi, I am a bit puzzled and wondered if anyone can help. I left my tank for 3 weeks over Christmas as I was away and couldn't get anyone to feed the fish for me. I used a tetra holiday block but it hardly disintegrated at all. Obviously I didn't do any water changes in the 3 weeks. I have...
