    The "Upflow" Scape (Beginner's Journal)

No I feel you the thought crossed my mind on day of flood.. poor sods, maybe next time I make a raft for them and transfer them back to the colony 💡 😂 Lovely choice on the plant. Never grown the mini version but the one I had was a brut and required frequent trimmings. Still it's good to have...

    The "Upflow" Scape (Beginner's Journal)

Good looking layout. Try and get to 12 hours of light a day. If you can get a springtail culture I would highly recommend adding them to help with any mold and fungus. I got my Springtails from ebay. Some plants will adapt easily to underwater. I have never had any problems with hc. I've had...

Update pic. Tank going good. Added 6 very small cpd's.. very shy at the moment still settling so didn't manage to coax them out for pic but they look gorgeous. Added some more small pieces of dragon stone as pic 1 (before) looked like it was missing something at the base of the rocks. I'm...

Thanks! Yes the dry start went great but I put some spring tails in so no mold issues. It's the first time using spring tails for dry start-great little critters. Hi everyone, here's update on the tank. Added some red cherry shrimp from another tank. H. Tenellum is getting going nicely now. Added some riccardia, so stopped adding excel. Dosing brighty k, mineral and started adding iron daily. Forgot to mention at the beginning of the journal but the...

    Shallow Iwagumi

Trimmed up the hc and glosso today. Ferts I'm using 1ml of each. 0.5ml excel all dosed daily. Plus adding calcium chloride and MgSO4.7H2O as my tap water is so soft at water changes. Cheers.

Hi guys Haven't posted in a while but got the aquascaping bug again so I'm back with an iwagumi inspired by Mr Amano's nature aquarium complete works. I started the scape off as dry start and then things got busy so dry start went on for 2 months or so. Tank is a dooa 60f with dragon stone...

    New substrate or reuse old?

Watched a video of filipe oliveira where he rinsed the old aqua soil then used a lot of root tabs to rejuvenate it. Sounded like he uses this practice quite often to good effect.

    Do Healthy Plants Release Organics?

Hi, Interesting thread. I can rule out fish food as my 60X30X18 high tech tank always has surface film. The tank only has a few cherry shrimp and is heavily planted. I don't feed the shrimp I just leave alone to graze on the biofilm.

I've had a few problems on a new iwagumi setup with hair algae and drop checker was always lime green going on yellow. Also I'm running a filter with 10x turnover. Plant I.D pls

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll take some pics of it where it's growing next time I take the dog for a walk. It stays this size all year round but more of it grows emersed than underwater. It does look a bit like mustard cress actually.

    Plant I.D pls

Saw this growing in south west uk in a drainage channel in quite fast moving water, it was growing out of decaying leaf matter etc. It also grows emersed and forms a fair old carpet especially in the summer. It is single stem with 2 leaves.

New year, new tank - Dry start small signature 45x45x30

Yeah some of the amazonia started to look like it had white mould forming so I removed what I could and switched the heat mat off. 35x20x30 Iwagumi Dry Start UPDATED 26/02/2014

Always difficult to arrange stones when you can't see all sides. Anyway I had a quick play in photoshop and came up with this. I tried to add a little height by raising the substrate so it looks a little weird.

New year, new tank - Dry start small signature 45x45x30

Hi mate. The temperature will be fine. When I had my dsm running last winter I also was worried about the low temp so tried a mat heater but turned it off due to it getting to warm. I found it made no difference or certainly didn't stop the plants from growing either way.

New year, new tank - Dry start small signature 45x45x30

Yeah that's good co2 is already in abundance so give it full on photon light blast (been reading ceg's posts) is no problem with dsm, the problem with too much light and not enough co2 only begins after the flood..as I'm sure you're all too aware ;) all the best and good luck :) Jon
  38. jon32

New year, new tank - Dry start small signature 45x45x30

Nice little project. Those tanks are really nice. Will look nice when it carpets and you add the moss etc. I guess if the co2 is free it can't hurt but there is more than enough co2 already present in the air, what you need for quick growth with dsm is plenty of light.

Hi Richard, thanks. it's been a long time since my last post here but the tank is still going but it has had a bit of a rescape. 42. jon32

    Seven Moss Cube

It will be plenty bright enough to grow any plant, I'm growing HC @ 65%. But if you don't like how bright it looks compared to your other light at 100% it may be best to stick with what you have - it seems to be working well enough! Grobeam 1500 might look a bit overkill over this tank though.
  43. jon32

    Seven Moss Cube

Great tanks Joel, love this latest one! I see what you mean about the plastic trim now, yep no way that bracket would fit without modifying. Like you say.. hang it or piece of wood/ brackets on the wall would work.

    Aquanano 40 DSM shrimp pics

Cheers Dan! :) I was amazed at how fast they cleared the algae in my tank.. I had some brown algae covering the rocks and literally overnight they (4 amano's) had eaten the lot! Of course you really need to fix the route cause of your algae problems first, and you know that since adding the...

    Aquanano 40 DSM shrimp pics

Hi Joel, thanks for the kind words! From memory the bracket fit quite snug over 6mm thick glass, but it is a universal bracket so I guess it should fit quite a wide range of thickness's. Hairgrass deficiency? new photo added

Thanks again Ceg. Yeah I will try and fine tune the light to co2 injection rate. Seems there's plenty of light at 60%...

    Hairgrass deficiency? new photo added

Thanks Ceg and Rob. Going by your suggestions I'm looking at light intensity now as a possible cause, I'll reduce it to 60%. I will also trim the leaves. Unfortunately the leaf deformities aren't just confined to that place behind the rock next to the glass, I'm also seeing it in open areas...

    Hairgrass deficiency? new photo added

Hi, I have a bit of a curious problem with my hair grass, it's growing quite well and sending out runners but some leaves looks crimped not straight like normal. The hg is Tropica Eleocharis sp. 'mini' 1-2-GROW! and Eleocharis acicularis. The tank was dry started for 8 weeks. Journal here -...

    Aquanano 40 DSM shrimp pics

Hi mate. yeah makes sense to use the controller seeing as I have that option. I'll try a lower peak intensity, maybe 70%, see how that goes. The brown algae (diatoms?) started to appear after the first week. It's restricted to the tops of the rocks where I attached the moss using the...

Thanks Ady. I see what your saying.. it's best not to take a chance on it and make sure the dc is green by the time the lights are on  I've noticed that the gush dc with it's small opening for gas exchange takes far longer to change colour than my other dc. Think I'll go back to having...

Hi Ady, I was hoping to reduce co2 to be honest. I know you shouldn't read to much into bubble count but I'm at 2 bps at the moment. I was hoping to slowly reduce that to around 1 bps. With regard to the dc - what about the time delay? if it's green 2 hours after lights on would that not be the...

    Aquanano 40 DSM shrimp pics

Thanks clone! I'm using water straight from the tap. I use Prime to dechlorinate it before filling the tank with it. Our tap water is soft (devon). I think that the GH of the tank has been raised by the seiryu stone. KH is 0 or 1.

Hi guys, quick update on how the tank's doing. The HC has really taken off since being submerged. The HG is slower growing but even so there has been significant growth over the past 2 weeks. Thanks chaps. I think the reg is fixed working pressure but I'm not 100% on that. There's no mention of it in the instructions. There is a big hex nut in the middle of the reg but it doesn't move by hand. I'm sure an adjustable reg would see it working but I thought 2 bar would be enough as...
