    Using Decorative Sand only

It is possible to have a planted tank-even high tech, with an inert, no nutrient enriched substrate. Although this places all the emphasis on dosing into the water column, I believe it to give scope for mistakes and if nutrient levels drop and if plants suddenly need more, they can suck them up...

ADA vs Oliver vs Columbo vs Red sea ??

Re: ADA vs Oliver Knott I have used nature soil, my only niggle with it that its really light so goes everywhere and is sometimes hard to hold down plants, i would go for the columbo stuff from the planted box.

    Capping.

or shall i just put my 2l of oli knotts down, and put gravel on top, simply and cheaply? will that be enough nutrients for the plants? I was also considering putting some dry ferts down with the substrate..? a scattering of my macro mix, aswell as the mono KP and the PN cant do any harm can it?

    Capping.

Changed my mind  Im not going to use the tropica(theres no point for the sake of about £2 wastage, its horrible stuff) so im going to use my oli knotts, i have about 2l of this, i want to do things lower costs, so how about buying Colombo Flora Base - Black 5l, this combined, roughly...

    Capping.

ok, im only using all three becuase ive only got limited ammounts of each you see, will do with the tropica, thanks for the advice i'll just go with my tropica and oli knotts capped with gravel then, thanks

    Capping.

ok, well, here is what im thinking about doing(as i have left overs of certain substrates) 1cm tropica substrate then 2cm of oli knotts nature soil capped with black gravel(just less than pea size) and plants: crypts rotala p.helferi e.tennellus. what do you rekon? and is it good practice...

Whats the minimum and maximum substrate you would use under the inert sand/gravel? and how much inert substrate would you add on top? cheers

Nutrient Rich Substrate that sand can go on top off

grains of sand will be able to fall through the gaps in the gravel.

Nutrient Rich Substrate that sand can go on top off

products such as tropica plant substrate need to be capped with something like sand, although, my experience with tropica substrate was pretty bad, it clouds the water badly if you re-plant or take plants up. This may be minimalised with heavy capping, i had about 2 inches on top of it.

    how thick should it be?

my tank is only 40cmx28cmx35cm(high) i think must have used about 7 litres of oliver knotts fine soil.

I am wanting some kind of light coloured sand for my nano tank, so i only need a small bag, however i cant seem to see what zambezi sand looks like in real life, some peoples pictures it looks very dark, others light

    bulking up eco complete

I wouldnt mix it up if you are going to add an inert black gravel for example, just cap the stuff you have with a fine gravel you like the look of.

Shall i spend the £10 extra and get oli knott "fine" substra

Shall i spend the £10 extra and get oli knott "fine" substra

the tank is a 40cm, so small.. i decided to go oli knott rather than AS becuase i cant be bothered with all the faffing around with ammonia, i want it to be sorted straight away and id rather save up and spend the extra if i have to.. so rather than "scale" it doesnt matter?
  24. AdAndrews

Shall i spend the £10 extra and get oli knott "fine" substra

Im just wondering what the benefits would be for getting the fine version of oli knotts nature soil, rather than the normal stuff, i guess it would fit the tank getter as it is a nano, and maybe hold the more delicate plants such as H.C in better, shall i spend the £10 extra and get fine, or...
