I have amanos in low TDS water, tap same as yours at around 75 TDS and tank water similar, but lower TDS. I do 60% water changes weekly direct from the tap and my amanos are fine. I don't know my calcium levels, but adding a little extra won't hurt. Cheerio, Ady.

I've found dragon stone to be inert also. I have it in my CRS tank without issue.

Personally I always have co2 off and drip acclimate shrimp to be safe. I'm sure you can do it successfully other ways, but if unsure don't risk it. Also worth bearing in mind if your leaving your co2 off for a day to also leave your lights off that day too otherwise your plants will suffer...

Hopefully if you get the water right for the crs you'll get some shrimplets from them too :)

Hi Nick, your most important tool for successful crs keeping will be a TDS meter, id invest in one of those before anything else. Test your tap water, you may be lucky and have low tds water straight from the tap which can be remineralised to suit. If not then remineralised RO is the way to go...

Yeah confirmed as true amanos. Crazy after having none ever berried I now have spotted at least another 2 berried today!! No great accomplishment I'm sure but feels good nonetheless! You maybe have some of the imposter amanos Troi.....

Yeah, it's a great thread. I have no intention of trying to raise them though, just making sure what I have is the true amano shrimp. I've read some posts where members thought they had bred amano shrimp but there is another shrimp very similar looking which can be raised in freshwater.

Hi John, 795 TDS is quite high, especially given that your tap water is only 350. Im guessing that your tank tds after a water change is still quite high as 30% water change with 350 tds wont drop the tank tds a huge amount, maybe around 100tds maximum? I dont think there is anything in the tank...

mmm, i got them in my last set up too, but they did dissappear after a while.....no shrimps though to speak of. I dont know their life cycle or why they would come and go....i just hope they go soon as i really dont like them sticking to the glass and spoiling the view, they dont move 'fast'...

I like snails generally, in the garden and in the tank, i find them kind of fascinating too :wacky: I bought two horned nerites to see how they would do and its like 'wheres Wally?' everytime i look at the tank.....but i always find them either buried, on an anubias leaf or chilling on a rock...

Chances are they are moults, especially in the warmer water which speeds up growth. I recently added 10 cherry shrimp to my tank and there were moults the next day too....i know that as i counted all the shrimp :)

Sounds like hydra. Not good for shrimp keeping as they can sting and eat them. Best to rid the tank of them, manual removal may not be enough but a quick search on the search function for hydra found Killi69 in his 'giant tank for killis' journal had an outbreak which he successfully treated...

if they are turning white and dying they are not happy with the water for some reason. are you using c02? If not im no expert but it could be tds swings due to peat moss and john innes...especially in such a small volume of water....troi may be able to help with his knowledge on these substrates...

Hi there, the water changes we carry out are to remove organic waste build up as a by product of plant growth, fish load, shrimp loads etc, not due to ei dosing....the most important factor with ei dosing in shrimp tanks is its effect on TDS which some of the more sensitive shrimp are fussy...

The trouble with getting big shrimp is you don't know how old they are, when you get small shrimp you know they are young and you will have them for longer so you get more for your money :) I think most breeders send them out 5-10mm. Cheerio Ady

Def sounds like c02 poisoning, the other inhabitants become slowly used to the c02 levels throughout the injection period, but its too much too quickly when going from low levels to high in 15 mins. C02 only needs to be off the day of purchase, until the shrimp are in and settled, then it can go...

Id say that was their downfall, i dont think 15 min acclimatisation is long enough for anything, let alone with c02 running. Shrimp are also more sensitive to water chemistry changes and need ideally drip acclimating for several hours. Personally i also either only add new inhabitants pre c02...
