    Amano shrimp and soft water

I have amanos in low TDS water, tap same as yours at around 75 TDS and tank water similar, but lower TDS. I do 60% water changes weekly direct from the tap and my amanos are fine. I don't know my calcium levels, but adding a little extra won't hurt. Cheerio, Ady.

    Introducing Amano shrimp into tank

Personally I always have co2 off and drip acclimate shrimp to be safe. I'm sure you can do it successfully other ways, but if unsure don't risk it. Also worth bearing in mind if your leaving your co2 off for a day to also leave your lights off that day too otherwise your plants will suffer...

    Remineralisation ...?

Hi there, I don't know about kent ro right as I've never used it, but a TDS pen will be a very useful tool if trying to breed shrimp. If you don't have one already I'd invest in one as it helps you maintain the correct water perameters for your shrimp and will give you a good indication of how...

    CRS new tank

Hi Nick, your most important tool for successful crs keeping will be a TDS meter, id invest in one of those before anything else. Test your tap water, you may be lucky and have low tds water straight from the tap which can be remineralised to suit. If not then remineralised RO is the way to go...

Mmm, I must have missed that, I'll take another look. Cheers for the heads up :)

    Amano shrimp?

Yeah confirmed as true amanos. Crazy after having none ever berried I now have spotted at least another 2 berried today!! No great accomplishment I'm sure but feels good nonetheless! You maybe have some of the imposter amanos Troi.....

    Amano shrimp?

Yeah, it's a great thread. I have no intention of trying to raise them though, just making sure what I have is the true amano shrimp. I've read some posts where members thought they had bred amano shrimp but there is another shrimp very similar looking which can be raised in freshwater.

    Amano shrimp?

Oh well, thought as much, first one ive ever had berried though and cant believe the amount of eggs :wideyed: Do they just drop the eggs before term or do the young hatch and then die? :dead: :(

    Amano shrimp?

Hi, hoping for a definite id please :) Is this an amano shrimp or one of the lookalikes? Giving Up on Shrimp (or maybe not?)

Hi John, 795 TDS is quite high, especially given that your tap water is only 350. Im guessing that your tank tds after a water change is still quite high as 30% water change with 350 tds wont drop the tank tds a huge amount, maybe around 100tds maximum? I dont think there is anything in the tank...

Stowaway Snails - Good or Bad?

mmm, i got them in my last set up too, but they did dissappear after a while.....no shrimps though to speak of. I dont know their life cycle or why they would come and go....i just hope they go soon as i really dont like them sticking to the glass and spoiling the view, they dont move 'fast'...

Stowaway Snails - Good or Bad?

I like snails generally, in the garden and in the tank, i find them kind of fascinating too :wacky: I bought two horned nerites to see how they would do and its like 'wheres Wally?' everytime i look at the tank.....but i always find them either buried, on an anubias leaf or chilling on a rock...

    RCS Water Temperature

Hi jimjim, Crystal Red Shrimp or Red Cherry Shrimp? Im guessing RCS as thats what you stated. RCS are pretty bullet proof so if its them id suspect another issue than temperature killing them off. CRS need more particular water chemistry, although again they will tolerate higher temperature so...

Death of the mother after giving birth

Sorry to hear this Richard, hope the shrimplets are ok. This could perhaps explain both diatoms and death if there has been any...

    Baby CRS and CO2

Sorry, also what temperature do you have your heater set at or is it a fail safe incase of seasonal drops in temperature or overnight drops? 21-22degrees Celsius is good for CRS. Hi brancaman, welcome to the forum. In answer to the above question i would say definitely yes, check out my CRShrimp nano journal linked in my signature below. HELP !!!! Amano shrimp eating plants

Hi, the spraybar solution is probably the best in all honesty. Im guessing its on the rear glass facing forwards to the front pane and is full length there or there abouts? HELP !!!! Amano shrimp eating plants

Hi there mate, Maybe increasing the lighting isn't the best idea until the plant has settled. Shrimp introduction to tank

Personally I think lowering the injection rate even for a few days is a bad idea as this will only have a negative effect on the whole tank.....you could end up with unhappy plants and algae this way. Odd parasite in tank. HELP?

Hi Kristina, Unfortunately as you say the photos are difficult to make out. If it does resemble the picture posted by londondragon then you need to get rid as its a damselfly larvae and can grow large enough to eat small fish, they easily consume shrimp......they are a nuisance! Cheerio Ady...

    Planaria in Shrimp only tank.

Hi, How much of an issue are Planaria to shrimp? I have a few in my CRS nano, only ever see two or three when feeding the shrimp. I've often thought about trying to get rid if them, but the shrimp are breeding and the Planaria aren't increasing in numbers....can they co exist? Cheers Ady

    Shrimp deaths and TDS

Ah we'll your clearly running a high tech system, but depending on your lighting intensity you may need to keep up with the higher dosing of co2 and ferts otherwise the plants will suffer...and consequently the shrimp. However 4ml of each sounds high on 20l so you could drop it a bit. Also...

    Shrimp deaths and TDS

Hi Mark, yeah 50%wc per week is probably excessive in shrimp only tanks unless high tech approach dictates so. 20-25% is more than enough as bio load from shrimp is small And this helps in keeping things stable. I use TDS measurements alone in my CRS nano to manage water. I also dose liquid...

    6+ dead shrimp at once....

carrying on from that, i dont know how fast lc does kill shrimp if overdosed, but id imagine it would be quick given their sensitivity, and it would effect all of them so perhaps this indicates its not down to the liquid carbon and maybe something else? As a side, how big are the tanks Jack...

    6+ dead shrimp at once....

Its a fair point Nath, but Jack has a mix of plants in his tanks that probably require some form of carbon. 6+ dead shrimp at once....

Hi Jack, Sorry to hear about the shrimp mate. Just to give an alternative thought, I dose liquid carbon in my CR shrimp tank and they are happy enough to breed. I only dose 1ml per day in a 50l tank which I think is around the recommended dosage for easy carbo. To regulate this lean dosing I...

How Long Will Shrimp Survive in post?

Chances are they are moults, especially in the warmer water which speeds up growth. I recently added 10 cherry shrimp to my tank and there were moults the next day too....i know that as i counted all the shrimp :)

    Weird looking parasite

  49. Ady34

    Weird looking parasite

Sounds like hydra. Not good for shrimp keeping as they can sting and eat them. Best to rid the tank of them, manual removal may not be enough but a quick search on the search function for hydra found Killi69 in his 'giant tank for killis' journal had an outbreak which he successfully treated...

if they are turning white and dying they are not happy with the water for some reason. are you using c02? Water change in shrimp tank

Hi there, the water changes we carry out are to remove organic waste build up as a by product of plant growth, fish load, shrimp loads etc, not due to ei dosing....the most important factor with ei dosing in shrimp tanks is its effect on TDS which some of the more sensitive shrimp are fussy...

    What Kills Amano Shrimp?

Def sounds like c02 poisoning, the other inhabitants become slowly used to the c02 levels throughout the injection period, but its too much too quickly when going from low levels to high in 15 mins. C02 only needs to be off the day of purchase, until the shrimp are in and settled, then it can go...
  59. Ady34

    What Kills Amano Shrimp?

Id say that was their downfall, i dont think 15 min acclimatisation is long enough for anything, let alone with c02 running. Shrimp are also more sensitive to water chemistry changes and need ideally drip acclimating for several hours. Personally i also either only add new inhabitants pre c02...

Thinking of setting up a CRS tank.....

Thanks Viktor, thats all good to hear. Maybe with the lower energy set up (lower light, liquid carbon) ill naturally be using lower quantities of ferts, so rises in the tds through fertilising will be minimal anyway. Cheers, Ady.
