Tesco sell de-ionised water which does the same thing.
Whats the 'pink tinge' mantra then? Is this where theres enough of a dose that anything falling out of solution doesnt matter? That's always been my problem with iron supplements.
Is there a way to combat this outside of RO water? I was tempted to give RO a go but then its just another expense.
Are you saying that magnesium isn't something we get much of over the UK in tap water?
Thanks Darrel. So based on that, is it worth me adding Epson Salts or would my trace mix be enough? I have been adding but i guess by doing so I'm hardening my already hard water. Is that right?
Hi guys,
I was reading an interesting threat on using epson salts as part of the EI regiem and that Gh of tap water may not be a mix of calcium and magnesium.
So I did some digging on Severn Trent's webpage and found that magnese is 1.1 parts per BILLION. I can't find anything relating to...
Hi Darrel. Whats the correlation here (in simple terms) around hard water and it making use of fertilisers? what is concidered hard water?
I've recently been toying with the idea of an RO unit to see how that affects plants.
Hi all,
Its been a while but I'm coming to the end of my dry salts and from what I can tell, the Nutrient Company no longer sell dry salts.
Does anyone have any suggestion where to get them from? The EI method seems to not be so popular any more.
Cheers
Well the Loralia is now in and its causing a lot of movement in the plans which is good!
I've not seen any change in the plant though. There's no sign of recovery however there's no deterioration either. Given this apparently grows pretty fast, how long should it be before i see signs of...
Thanks for the input Clive.
Thats very odd because my CO2 is causing the drop checker to turn more towards yellow and its at the point just below the fish gasping at the surface.
Could it be down to flow? I've an Eheim Pro 3 (1700lph) however I've never gotten the full output of this filter...
Hello All,
I posted this in the plans section however i think its better suited here.
I have some Ranunculus inundatus and its been in the tank for about 5 weeks now but its done nothing apart from the leaf heads falling off.
If this a transitional period or is it lacking in some form of...
Thank guys.. I was hoping that wouldnt be the case.. its a lot more pricey!
Am i right in thinking that i would follow the normal EI quantities with this mix then?
Are there any other alternative places to get dry ferts from? Money being an issue and all that...
quick question guys.
I'm about to order from Aqua essentials as im about out of my dry chemicles but notice theres now trace mix plus?
What should I be using for EI type dosing? I've never had the option before so I'm little confuised as to which one I might have been using beforehand.

Hi Guys,
I'm a little stumped.
I read on James website the following for the macro mix:
Assuming they are in the same bottle 10 ml of the solution would provide for a 180l tank:
Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) - 2.04ppm
Potassium Phosphate (KH2PO4) - 0.48ppm
According to Nutricalc i should be...
Right'o!
I think i'll put it down to CO2 as i really am struggling to get the levels up to what I want. I dont think the filter is powerful enough to diffuse the CO2 at the rate its needed with my Aquamas reactor. I've got a rhynox 2000 comeing tomorrow so i'll see how that one performs.
HI Guys,
On my crypt wendtii i have holes appearing in leafs which i know could be a deficiency but i also wonder if it could be snails which i have a fair amount of.
I dont appear to have much in the way off deficiencies although i do have green spot on slow growing stuff as well as old...
Its not just on my anubias though.. which si really annoying me as i dont seem to be able to rid it no matter what I do. I was thinking about trying EI again but i even had this problem when i was doing this before.
I've seen a scape george did a while back with valis at the back an anubias on...
Hi guys,
I've been dosing for a good abount of time now with PPMD + PO4 and with this i've had green spot algae quite prominant on anything slow growing like my anubias and e. tennilus. I modified the po4 in the solution to double the recipe amount thinking that the po4 would help cure the...
Hi Same,
I'm aware of garden direct but as i'm out and about visiting a couple of garden centres this weekedn i was wondering if i could pick up some trace elements locally. I have macro in abundance.
Lee
Hi Guys,
I've ran out of trace mix and could do with getting some this weekend.
Is this stuff readily available from any garden centre or is it a little more specialist?
Lee
Hi Clive,
Sorry, I didnt mean it as a right and wrong method. I was pretty supprised to see just how much difference there was in these 2 elements alone. Learning things like this are helping me understand better the advantages and disadvantages. I'm still waiting for the funds to get my 3rd...
Hi Guys,
I've been reading up more and more on the numbers side of dosing shedules and I just want to check my findings were right.
I'm using Nutri-Calc as the preferred calculator and heres my findings.
Basing these results on a solution mixed with 500ml of water and dosing 10ml a day in a...
Hi Guys,
I'm going by the forumula on James website now so hopefully I'll see some improvement on this.
With regards to GSA and higher PO4; Will it dissapear in its existing places or will it just not grow anywhere else meaning I have to manually remove the infected leafs ect?
What chemical...
All comments apreciated guys!
Those pictures really do show some difference. It started off as growing well, and did so for a month or so but has recently died down.
I think i'm going to do James method on this tank and do EI on my nano so i can experiment with both methods and see for myself...
Hi James,
Thanks for your input. I agree on the stability although i never used to untill recently and i think that might have been half my problems. Now I'm hitting the CO2 well before lights on so its at peak levels when the lights come on.
Indeed, I have the same problems with the CO2...
I guess part of me now has the hunger to learn more. OK, i'll never be at the point of knowing as much as Clive or James but now I'm starting to get somewhere I'm almost looking for a deficiency to challenge me! Seems odd I know!
I think I'll go EI on my nano when I get that up and running in a...
Thanks for the input clive.
I doubt it would be the flow as the filter outlet is directly next to these plants. I'm about out of the PPS solution so think I'm going to try something else. I've found PPs to be OK but its caused a few problem which need tweaking (i.e. the PO4 problem)
I'm not...
Thanks for the comments Clive.
I dont have a full sized tripod as yet so i placed it on a table which is slightly lower than the tank so its not the best shot.
I did 'up' the PO4 a while back to combat GSA and this knocked it back quite a bit although some still present. The CO2 is still...
Hi Guys,
I got some Pogostemon stelleta from Clive a while back and up until recently, its been growing very well but is now starting to look worse for ware. I think the problem is stunting and while this is showing clear signs of a proble, nothing else appears to be showing a problem that I...
Looking at the instructions on the tropica website it appears that you only dose once per week and that this is sufficient. I jknow George is using it amongst others and haveing great sucess with it but i'm curious. Are they feeding only the stated amount or a modified amount?
I'm concidering...
I wouldn't say I have high light, not in comparison to some on here. I run 4 t8's over 180 litres. I was always taught that you need weekly water changes with EI. But then your saying if I did dose EI on a low light tank then I'm less likely to get algae?
Surely nutrients have to come into it...
Its not that I dont want to to any water changes but with EI you have to be so strict on them otherwise you could be in a green mess! These other methods will supposedly give me a little more freedom. due to my work and weekend commitments i can sometimes do 2 water changes a fortnight then...
I've used EI but didnt like the water changes since i am away a lot of weekends.
I'm about to give the PPS pro tyle solution a go although I'm curious about the Tropica clone on James' website. Dosing pre made ferts just get too damn expensive for my liking.
Now thats what I'm talking about!
If theres any chance you can get me some then that would eb awsome. I'm forever running out and find the cost really hard to cope with at th emoment.
Are there different strength ferts?
For example, should all potassium sulphate be of the same concentration?
I'm looking at buying from garden direct due to how much you get for your money but want to be sure its as good quality as QE
Where do you all get your chemicles for EI?
I know AE do them all but I've heard garden direct do them to for a fraction of the price.
Which ferts do you buy from where?
