You can set up an RO unit to run of a hose pipe / washing machine tap so no permanent plumbing needed. This is what I do.
There is a really good You Tube video on this but I cannot link to it whilst at work.
Sorry, I should have phrased that better. In earlier posts you were comparing the Ottos behaviour to the Guppies. What I meant was that by the time you compared the Otto to the Guppies they had already been in the tank for a few days so would have gotten used to the CO2 level at the time of the...
The Guppies would have acclimatised to the CO2 level over a period of time. The Otto may be struggling with the level at the moment and I suspect it was too much for the shrimp.
I would do a large water change to bring the levels down and see if it perks up.
I just have a tub in the garden. It naturally filled with rain water and not long after the daphnia etc turned up. I have done absolutely nothing to it and I know have hundreds of daphnia and other organisms in there. The tub is full of algae on the sides mind you.
I would always try to attack the root cause of the issue. Far better to try and eliminate it than cover it up IMO :)
But, shrimp and snails are nice although snails are perhaps not too common in tanks on this forum.
I use this one - 4 Stage 50 Gallon Per Day Reverse Osmosis System with DI - Osmotics Water Filtration
DI filter is not essential but does give a zero TDS read and if you decide to go down the marine route at some point it would be handy. It can be removed if not needed.
You can buy a standard RO filter and with a couple of cheap extras you can make it into a portable system so that it does not have to be permanently plumbed in.
