I suppose it depends on your criteria. ADA are pretty tough to beat in terms of quality but of course this comes at a price.

Personally I would try to keep the filter media in the tank. It won't do well in the canister for a week. If it was me I would put the media in some sort of mesh/tights and keep it above or near the air-pump to keep water circulating through it.

Not used either of those so perhaps others will advise. Personally I like the TMC Aquabar.

Snails are a good match. Seriously. Fish will tend to eat baby shrimp and the dimensions of the tank really only make it suitable for shrimp (and snails [emoji4]) anyway.

How basic is basic? You may not even need the CO2 which would make things a lot easier tbh. The CO2 connected to the venturi will not really work. The CO2 needs to go through some form of diffuser to break the large bubbles into micro bubbles.

You don't want much do you! [emoji1] Does it have to be an internal filter? How do you plan on connecting the CO2 to it?

Don't actually use duckweed as its a nightmare to get rid off. Try Water Lettuce or Frogbit.

Does the tank have fish in? I have snails in all tanks and they are never a problem. I just find that if the snail population does get too big then it is a sign I am over-feeding my fish.

They can only 'see' the food if it moves. Amphibians can be encouraged to take food - for example you could feed a large bullfrog on dead mice - but you have to wiggle them about a bit.

Flow / distribution could be an issue. Those Vallis looked quite well protected from the flow by those rocks.

Rather than hose reducers etc why not just pour the water into a bucket and pump it from there?

Can you post some clearer shots of the plants and their problems areas? First thing I would do is remove the reflectors to reduce the light intensity and relieve some of the stress on the tank. What is your cleaning routine?

I use Re-min RO for water changes so no need to dechlorinate or add anything else than has already been added. :)

Hard water is annoying. I just use re-min RO now and keep soft water fish so no more residue. :)

Another option if you are sticking with an internal heater is to add a black background and check out the Aqua-el neo heaters. They are very discreet for an internal heater and you wouldn't need the thermometer on the front either as it does that job too.

Here are the photos. Will give you an idea at least. I also noticed that with the Opti-White glass I could clearly see down it from the top to the bottom. Mine is 36cm high. With the normal glass I could just about make out the bottom.
