Something like that would be really nice on a stand if you can't mount a spotlight to the ceiling, also there are LED ones available with flexible attachments so you can alter the direction of the 3 lamps.
CFL would be the best value for money power wise, but an LED would look nicer, budget wise? go for a LED yard spotlight, if you want to spend a bit more go for a fan cooled CREE cob light.
Right i'm going to ask the question no one wants to ask...
Recommendations on bottom of the barrel LED luminaire and clip ons in a nice spectrum that aren't overly blurple? anyone?

I'm in completely the same boat @TBRO i had a very long break, hadn't posted since 2011 before coming back, glad to see you back here aswell mate! :D  As far as the shimmer/ripple effect goes, i have a 30W LED floodlight off amazon and it gives the effect, just the colour spectrum...
Most stuff will die off fairly quickly due to lack of light, barring crypts, echinodorus, java ferns, mosses, and easy carpeting plants like dwarf sag and marsilea, other plants will gradually just melt or die back in order of light demand.
