Yeah sounds like you maybe went in a bit strong too early mate.

    Poor growth and algae

Has it been set up long ? I can only back up what Jay was saying, plants take a bit of time to settle in and adapt to their new surroundings. It looks like you might have threw the kitchen sink at them a bit early. I would also reduce the lighting to about 6 hours and maybe turn the brightness...

Tips on choosing and using found rocks and wood in a planted tank?

There was a place up my way that sold quarry waste for soakaways and backfill, if I remember right I think it was Basalt. Some very interesting pieces on a par with many "scaping" stones I've seen. The biggest difference being it was £25 per ton :D

Tips on choosing and using found rocks and wood in a planted tank?

Not sure mate, I have heard stories of people trying to cool the down with cooler water and them shattering, either way just soaking in boiling is a far safer option, definitely letting them cool gradually if nothing else.

Tips on choosing and using found rocks and wood in a planted tank?

I would soak them with boiling water rather than physically boil them. Some could explode when heated up.

    New aquascape

Welcome Buddy, yeah using an already mature filter and some tank water will speed up the process but the tank isn't really fully mature until the bacteria colonises all the surfaces in the tank like the gravel and hardscape so more frequent water changes are still in order to begin with. Depends...

If you like it then it's the perfect dimensions ;)

    Recommend aquarium dimensions

The EA aquacsaper tank is 60LX50DX36H, the reasoning behind those ratios are that the extra depth means you can get a better sense of perspective so everything isn't crammed up at the front glass adding a sense of depth. From what I understand the height is kept quite low so you can mess about a...

    1200 litre NA makeover

Helluva job pal, really impressive. I can't believe that was only after 7 weeks! Looks like a mature system that had been set up for years. Is Gary dosing your all-in-one in here? One thing I would point out, any chance you can buy yourself some hopups or something, the first part of the video...

    Incredible Dutch scapes!!

I just watched this on George's Youtube channel. Always amazes me how they pull these off with getting the water flow right. There never seems to be a lot of water movement unless they turn it off for the purpose of filming. With such dense planting how do they get water movement down to the...

    My bare bottom planted tank.

If you ever needed evidence that most plants will take nutrients through the leaves and whether we need to substrate dose I think that answers the question. That gives me an idea for saving plants when in between setups. Egg crate tile on the bottom to tie plants to. What you planning on doing...

Oxygen Sim [17th July Update] - Aquascaping for PC & VR

There's always the ukaps plant database, plenty of images of plants and their names in there. I don't think anyone would mind if you borrowed images from there. Also the Tropica website which has an extensive catalogue of plants and images. May be copyright issues though so I would check first...

Oxygen Sim [17th July Update] - Aquascaping for PC & VR

Wow, interesting concept, will be keeping an eye on this to see how it progresses. A lot of people do photo shopped mock ups in here to see how a tank will look before planting but generally it's just green lines. To be able to put actual plants in there would be cool.

    Rock Slump :(

You can use aquarium silicone or hot weld plastic guns to glue smaller stones that are under the gravel line. Some people bag up gravel in tights to build up depth in areas then pour gravel over the top. Also clear plastic works for building up banks like the thin plastic strips you get in new...

Aquascape without algaes is it really or..?

Amano probably doesn't go into detail about npk probably because ADA sell commercial products. They don't really want anyone breaking down what is in those products and would rather just tell you you need this and that and hope you buy it, ultimately it is a business there to make money. Not...

Aquascape without algaes is it really or..?

I think what you're experiencing is a phenomenon called algae can't read. They don't actually care what brand name all the equipment is. I have a water bottle on my rabbit hutch and if left for too long that will produce algae as well. Algae are very opportunistic and will thrive given any...

    Glueing driftwood to each other?

Could even drill a small hole in each bit and glue a matchstick in as a dowel.

    Glueing driftwood to each other?

Thin black cable ties as well at a push. Once grown over they are hardly visible.

    Glueing driftwood to each other?

I have used the melting glue guns to repair things in the tank that I have broke. I suspect it's safe once cured as there's no spurious chemicals involved just melted plastic that solidify's again. They're only about a £5 in wilkos or B&M

    Low tech Betta aquascape

Nice tank, sometimes the simplest setups give the most pleasure running. When I've kept both together previously the Betta was partial to adult RCS as well. Will be interesting to see if he acquires the taste, hopefully not though.

    Cleaning hardscape

For the awkward bits at the bottom I generally drop 50% of the water, knock off any pumps and filters and dose 2x the tank volume when full directly at the affected area with a syringe. I then put the pumps on for an hour to get it well circulated around the tank then start topping up the water...

    Anyone got any views/advice?

Looking good mate, coming along nicely! Regarding the Swords, they are notorious for having a massive root systems. If/when you pull one out expect to pull out the majority of smaller plants around it  On occasion when I had decided there was a large Amazon where I didn't want it to be I...

    Keeping the stems down

:D Yeah I think it's about time. Never did one before but I have been keeping records and pictures of this which is my first serious attempt. Like I mention there are little niggles. It's ok asking questions in here but I would probably get better advice if people knew the full story from day...

    Keeping the stems down

I don't think I have the depth of substrate to bury completely one of the plastic pots. I do have rockwool and mineral wool but not sure how safe that is. Boy do I have rockwool  I have an interiors company where we do lots of fire protection but the rockwool we use has all sorts of other...

    Keeping the stems down

My understanding of lead weights was that under water they were safe hence being used in mains water for the home. I think it needs to oxidize in the air to cause problems but I could be wrong. What about the ceramic tubes if I bury them in the gravel? I can live with plants growing outside the...

    Keeping the stems down

What do you use to keep stems in the substrate? I'm using cat litter which is a bit better now than when I first set up. Problem I have is I'm trying to get some stems growing in a back corner to hide some pipework but it's a pain as obviously I need to remove the pipes now and again and end up...
