I didn't really find the "healing issue" that interesting... I won't be subscribing, but like I said in the previous post I don't really get on with magazines...
I agree with Westyggx and Tom, as you don't have a nutrient rich substrate you'll need to dose the water column with fertilisers so that plants can get what they need from there. Also as suggested root tabs will help and they wont be as much hassle as a substrate exchange.
I would have thought...
I think now is a "funny" time for most businesses, let alone the fish one. Money is tight all over...
I only ever buy my plants from TGM or online as my LFS are not plant focused.
After reading one of George F's PFK articles (10 planted tank myths) myth #6, I've twisted one of my spray bars so that it causes ripples on the surface so that it drives off excess gas once the Co2 goes off. I previously had very little surface movement and the DC hardly changed colour after...
The main problem that you face with corner tanks is getting the flow right, so that it carries your Co2 and fert (if used) all around the tank. I know that it can be achieved as I've seen some lovely scapes in these type of tank but it is more challenging than the standard shape. High tech tanks...
I agree with George that it would probably been better if you'd resolved any problems privately but I also agree with Gfish. Why would anyone offer plants that even show the smallest sign of algae growth? Or if there is surely a small disclaimer would have been a good idea? "I have some...
FYI - Java Moss is this :
and Java Fern is this :
I recommend moving the spray bar under the surface of the water by at least 2cm. Having the water falling through the surface of the water will mean that a lot of your Co2 will be exchanging into the atmosphere. With planted tanks your...
You're plants are generally looking very healthy. With the Java moss you're probably best keeping it trimmed short, you could then take the cuttings and float them on the window sill in a glass bow and grow them out and "replant". Are you able to remove the wood to clean the glass and then...
I think above seems like a lot of work! But it seems very logical based on The CEG's Light ==> Co2 => Ferts equation. I am interested to see how it works out for u Niru. I doubt that I'll be away from more than a week at any given time so I doubt I'll need to "wean" them down as you are doing.
By that same rational the temperature must decrease gradually throughout the night. Otherwise the water would just keep getting warmer and warmer. Surely the perceived differences if due to the atmospheric temp dropping and the water retaining its absorbed temp and releasing it slowly back into...
Now Luis! It is clearly the rocks and wood that MAKE the scape, but it is the attention to detail, balance, colours and the way all is presented that make them truly amazing scapes! ;)
I would have thought that if this was a commonly accepted and practice technique there would be lots of heater (internal/inline) that had multi-temp settings with built in timers?
What I've learnt so far from my continuous reading of UKAPS and a splattering of practical application and failures is that you need to get a balance between Light => Co2 => Ferts <= Flow. From the teachings of Grand Master G. Farmer, The CEG and other knowledgeable uber gods we know that Light...
Re: Stupid is as stupid does
I think this is the thread that Clive is referring to Bending Clear Perspex Tubing. I tried it myself recently, the first two bends were ok, but the 3rd buckled a bit... I would suggest packing with more salt after each bend (and compacting) or using bending...
I'm relatively close to TGM but have made the trip about 4-5 times so far. Once on they way back from Anglesey with a car full of camping gear (+ ADA Malaya and a lighter wallet after the visit!). You should tie this thread to this one.
I'd be up for a UKAPS meeting at TGM if one gets...
Fluid Sensor Online are very good for dry chem fertilisers, check out the KNO3 prices here.
I've used them a couple of times and they are very efficient. Usually receive your items within a couple of days.
I can take no credit for the way I do water changes as they were take direction from London Dragon and this thread. The powerhead/pump was stolen from TGM, as I happened to be instore on a day they were changing some water out of one of the big display tanks.
I converted over to the python syphon method about a year ago when changing water on my 240l tank. I found the syphoning took too long for me, as there wasn't much of a difference in high between the tank and sink. So I introduced a Maxi-Jet powerhead/pump to the process. Now I pump the water...
I have Red Phantom Tetras and they look very similar to Serpae but they are definitely not aggressive. I have some with a couple of Black Phantoms and four angels and never seen any signs of aggression.
I've been looking for one for ages too, finally got a 2nd hand one off ebay last week. I was beginning to think that there was a well known problem and that they had been discontinued... But if it's manufacturing issues that makes me feel better about setting it up soon. :D
Hi all,
Just managed to acquire these to bad boys from work (they were chucking about 8 of the away). These two seemed to be the best of them, others having small chips around the rim.
I think most fish don't really care about the plants and such, just as long as the water chem is right for them (there are exceptions obviously).
Have a look in the Planted Tank Gallery section to get an idea of what others have done and the plants they've used. You can then put together a few...
Hello! and welcome!
As you're probably aware from your research and reading this site there are basically 2 different ways to go with planted tanks. Low-tech and High-tech, the main differences between the 2 is the amount of light and the addition of Co2. Low light (2x18w T8s) and no Co2 is...
I have plans to rescape my 240l tank and will be using a 80l tub similar to the above to store the fish I plan to put my Fluval 405 filter in the box. I am concerned about how I will deal with the ammonia spike from the ADA Aqualsoil once I add more in with the new scape....
I either I take the...
I was tempted by this, but having only ever purchased one issue of PKF b4 (this months/Nov), the one off payment and the experiences of the ppl above I've been put right off!
I'd rather just spend £59.99 on an ace looking nana and save the £23!
I want to get this issue and I have plans to get it but I get the impression that this is not a typical issue. And by the time I've decided I'm interested the offer will have expired... Such is the way of things!
Do you have to pay the full amount upfront? It seems a lot of money... I would love the tank, but I've never read PFK b4 so don't really know whether it would be worth it...
Is this out right now?! Or next month? Does anyone know the exact release date?
I would love to get this, but my memory is poop... So I have a habit of missing things like this...
Thanks Nick! Lol, I really was thinking you were talking about proper egg boxes like Lenny Henry used to sound proof his Brixton pirate radio studio! ;)
So is that what most ppl use then?
Thanks for the suggestions! I don't really what to raise the height of the stones that much, that would mean I would need to buy more substrate!
Hey Stu, is that the same stuff that the camping mats are made of? They seem to be a little cheaper than the Yoga mats online...
Hi all,
Does anyone have any recommendations on things to use to protect the glass bottom of a tank from from heavy/rock hardscape?
I've been thinking of getting some polystyrene sheet/tiles to place underneath the larger/heavier rocks when I rescape my tank. Would that be suitable? Or even...
Hi all,
I was wondering if our veteran rescapers can offer up some advice on an easy way to remove the sand they have used to cap another substrate.
I am gonna start rescaping my tank very soon and wish to remove and reuse the sand I have over my ADA Malaya. I'm currently looking at using a...
Re: If you had £8 to the free delivery @ TGM what would you
Umm.. whats that?
Paul - I think I've got enough rock for my new scape. Please check it out and give me your opinion! Thanks tho!
Hi all!
Looking to get some substrate from TGM and I've just fallen shy of the free delivery mark... So with that in mind, if you had £8 to the free delivery @ TGM what would you get?
I'm not really ready for plant acquisition, and they would stand in a low-tech setup until the target tank...
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could share what they do with their beloved fishies whilst they are rescaping their homes?
I'm sure I've read of some of the more "hardcore" scapers taking the fish back or returning them. I assume to the lfs and not there maker! ;)
For those that wish to...
Lairewen are the tanks sat in a bright area? If they are in direct sunlight this could compound algae problems.
Had it been stated the wattage of the lights being used?
You can get some nice Java Ferns from most fish shops (make sure they have roots or u're basically buying dying leaves) and...
Just to be contradictory I have a Juwel Rekord - 110l running on 2x T8 lights and my plants grow happily (some slowly, others not so slowly) with no addition of nutrients. This is a typical "low tech" tank. I have low demanding plants in like Java Fern, Xmass Moss and Java Moss, I also have some...
I'm not an expert but I'm lead to believe that HC is a reasonably demanding plant, certainly to get it to grow in a compact form. You would definitely need Co2 and ferts. I understand that you can grow it with relatively "low light" with plentiful Co2. Hopefully someone with a bit more...
You'll have better results "seeding" a new filter from a mature filter. I believe best results are with exchange of filter media, like spounge. Even a small amount will give your new filter a jump start.
If you were getting one second hand then I would say yes, but I've heard that they can have problems with the lighting hood. I dont see the point in buying a new aquarium and then cut out the filter.
I have a Juwel 800 and haven't had anyone problems with it as yet, but only had it 9months.
Ahhh, I'm sure tho link at the start is the same as the end.
I've not gotten round to tending to the gf's garden yet, so I would only be feeding the weeds!
No, I meant cleaning gravel or sand. On my 110l tank I clean the gravel at the same time as changing the water. If you're using a pump to force the water out of the tank you can't suck the waste off the bottom...
Thanks Flyfisherman I'll have a read through those threads in a mo. I'm starting...
Hi all,
I was thinking on the drive into work about the best way to do a water change on my 240 litre tank... On my 110 litre Jewul tank it's easy all I need is a gravel cleaner and a 12 litre bucket... On the 240 I'm currently using a home made python but it's quite slow to drain and tricky...
I've added an assasin snail to both of my tanks, but one snail can only do so much!
I had to clean out some food that was added to my big tank by our unsupervised 4yo... and whilest I was using the length of air hose to syphon it off the bottom I hunted down as many of the pesky little...
I was introduced to the frosted tank backing at the Oliver Kontt demo at TGM, I managed to find some of the static stuff at B&Q shortly after. You just need water to attach it to the tank, and it can be pealed off and start again if you make a mistake. I've not used any yet, but plan to soon.
Yeah, that was my concern. I wasn't sure it there was a generally accepted "bedding in" time, as it give the plants a fighting chance against unwanted attentions.
In that case... I've run out of excuses... ;)
Yeah, I know about cycling tanks, I was just under the impression that it wasn't as necessary. The term "silent cycle" has been used in the past for cycling planted tanks.
I was more interested in from a plant point of view how long after planting should you wait before you start introducing...
I haven't cycled the filter fishlessly, if that's what you mean. I started to add some ammonia initially and added some water that had mature filter media "squeezed into to start it off, but that's about it really...
I was under the impression that you didn't have to cycle the tank in the...
Hi all,
I've just recently setup a new planted tank. I've had the filter has been running for months in with the tanks scaped (with Aquasoil capped with sand) but just recently, a week ago, planted the plants I have received. I am wondering how long I should wait before adding shrimp or fish...
Get some frosted static (foil ;) ) film from B&Q to give you a opaque/blurred look like that used by Oliver Knott in the scape he did for TGM.
