    Best Filter Media

Thank you! I'll add some more. It was quite tricky even getting the 4 of them in since any slight movement would dislodge another and push it out. I'll do my best! Or maybe I'll have to cut some in half to fit on the edges.

    Best Filter Media

How densely are people using pot scrubbers packing them in? I'm tempted to use this method but like... how much do I need is the question lol

    Do I need more filtration?

Oh I don't mind the appearance. Once it's moved to the display I can take the skimmer out. Do you normally run yours 24/7?

    Do I need more filtration?

Good point. I'll add a pump or skimmer to it. Thanks!

    Do I need more filtration?

It'll be quite open, high energy iwagumi with only cherry shrimp. I have plenty of skimmers and pumps laying around I could add. Do you recommend the pumps over adding an additional filter?

    Do I need more filtration?

Hi everyone, I'm setting up a 60cm tank (ADA 60P) for a display for an event and want to grow it in beforehand. Usually for filtration I'd add something like a Biomaster 350 or even 600 with some diffusion. However, I only have a Filtosmart 100 on hand and wondering if this will be enough. For...

Which canister for my new build?

An interesting observation I've made is that the noise of the Biomaster (and filters in general) seems to vary greatly depending on the tank stand or cabinet. In my previous big tank setup the Biomaster was so loud, I could often hear it upstairs on a quiet night whereas in my new setup (new...

    Oase BioStyle 115

Interesting! I was looking at getting some of these.

What is the quietest canister you've used?

I know I've already posted but had to give an update. I've had my Fluval 307 for several months now and I've never cleaned it since it was setup, yet the flow is still perfect and it's whisper quiet. Very impressed! Just wish it had a heater! 😅

    Oase BioStyle 115

They actually have an Oase Biostyle Thermo which comes with a built in heater. It's due to hit the UK market anytime now. Only downside is it's preset to 26c.
  11. Courtneybst

What is the quietest canister you've used?

My Fluval 307 is the quietest canister filter I've owned so far. I've had the whole Biomaster range, Filtosmart 100, Eheim 2213 and 2217.

    Oase 60 vs Tidal 35

It was a fair amount, enough that I had to keep it in a plastic tray so I didn't have to keep mopping up water. I'm not alone in my experience either...

This whole anaerobic filtration thing is getting out of hand!

Although purely anecdotal, I'm starting to think that the media is largely irrelevant (happy to be corrected). Over the years I've used only sponges, only filter wool, ceramic, clay, lava rock, alfagrog, matrix, no media even, and have had success with every one of those tanks. So I ask...

    Oase 60 vs Tidal 35

I've not used a Tidal or Oase 60 but have used the Oase Filtosmart 100 which was more than powerful (too powerful) for my 25L tank. It did a great job, I just found it annoying to clean because it leaked every time it was opened.

    Oase Biomaster Thermo 250

Hi Annie, Unfortunately pretty much all filters are heavily overstated in terms of their filtration ability and despite being for tanks 'up to 250L', the Biomaster 250 will be seriously underpowered for your tank. To put it into perspective, I'm running a Biomaster 850 on a 90L tank and that...

    What size is your tank?
  18. Courtneybst

Smaller external filter with built in heaters

Could always go for the Biomaster Thermo 250 and put taps on the pipes to control flow if it's too much. Second hand, it's basically the same price as a new filtosmart.

    Oase 350 or 600?

    Definitely 600 for that aquarium.

Oase Biomaster… thinking of buying and need some advice

I do this every week with no ill effects. To be honest, even if I did absolutey murder all the bacteria in the pre filter sponge, there's still 6 trays worth (at least in the 850) of media which the bacteria is still clinging too. There's also tons more bacteria in the planted tank itself. I...

How noisy should a biomaster thermo 250 be?

I'm almost regretting selling my old Eheim 2217. That thing ran for 11 years without ever changing any seals, no lubrication and only cleaned the impeller 3 times during the 11 years. Thing worked like a charm and was powerful AF for the price. I suspect if I bought an Eheim 2217 now it would be...

How noisy should a biomaster thermo 250 be?

My Biomaster 350 is pretty quiet, can't hear it at all. My 850s on the other hand are very noisy. Can hear the hum from upstairs at night, and I've tried the usual things.
  23. Courtneybst

    What filter? (330 liters )

    I run a Biomaster 850 and a 350 on my 350L tank. Seems sufficient!

Oase Biomaster Thermo 600: Maintenance questions.

The media trays should be relatively clean still thanks to the pre filter. The pre filter is all that should need cleaning after 1 month.

Oase thermofilter owners - does your heater make a weird noise?

Do you mean like a clicking noise? If so my filtosmart definitely makes that noise occasionally and I never knew what it was. My Biomasters don't make that noise.

    Powerhead recommendation

I have the 1600 just adding flow to my tank which is 350L (120cm). The flow cannot be adjusted.
  27. Courtneybst

    Powerhead recommendation

I have this powerhead, and it is pretty decent. One thing I will say, it is quiet when it wants to be. Some days I can barely hear it, other days it's very noisy with no rhyme or reason.

Aqua reo skimmer and jet reviews anyone ?

Sorry, I should have said, I'm using the aquario pipes too and it works well. I get movement at the substrate level for sure but I add the powerhead to give me extra flow. With the dimensions of your tank it should be fine. Thanks so much! 🙂

Aqua reo skimmer and jet reviews anyone ?

Hey Dean, It depends on the orientation of the outlet. I've got an 850 (supplemented by a 350) on my tank which is the same dimensions as a 120p, 350L and it does ok. I use the 350 to add flow to the back and a powerhead to push the water across the front. Although decent, I don't think I could...

    Biomaster 600 to big?

Hey Jan, As long as you can control your flow so things aren't blowing around e.g. using a spin pipe like you said, it'll be just fine. The more filtration capacity the better!

    Bio Media for Planted Tanks.

Very interesting read Darrel, thanks! Let's say you didn't want to replace your biological media (assuming you've already bought it and it's established), could you replace your 'mechanical' filtration i.e. sponges with the scrubbers to get a similar function?
  36. Courtneybst

    Bio Media for Planted Tanks.

I'm assuming that the higher numbers are better? Also... are the pot scrubbers inert? I only ask because I've bought some wire wool looking scrubbers before that actually had detergent in/on it. Might have to take a trip to the £ shop!

Making steel inlet/outlet baby shrimp safe

@Paulthewitt I had this exact problem recently. I bought some custom made stainless steel mesh guards from another UKAPS user that slip into the inside and look inconspicuous. They look and work great, however if you've got a skimmer one you'll more than likely find your skimmer part sinks and...

    Media Basket

If it's any consolation in my 2213 I removed the white basket thing and used the lid at the base to allow water to flow in and then just stuffed it to the gills with media. Doesn't appear to have any bypass.

Aquael ultramax or Oase Biomaster external filter

Hey, I can't make the decision for you but if it were me I'd get the Oase. My reasoning is based on exactly what you said; aftercare. If it were cars for example, I'd rather have a slightly less powerful and more expensive car knowing that any problems I may have will be resolved well than a...

    Al Nero 3

I'm guessing at a higher output % I could use this on my 350L? Or do you reckon that's pushing it? Edit: I've seen a reef keeper review saying he added it to his 90 US gallon (which is about the same size as 350L) and it's churning things up nicely.

Glassware (or Stainless steel) for lidded aquarium?

In that case you'll be fine with a 16mm stainless steel lily pipe. The u-bend diameter is quite large, it's actually too wide so I have to use filter floss pushed between the two pipes to keep them straight and not bent inwards to each other. It's too wide to use my magclip that I have on my...

Glassware (or Stainless steel) for lidded aquarium?

I use stainless steel lily pipes with an acrylic lily pipe 'adapter' on a Juwel Rio 300. I just slot them into the cut outs at the back. I could have them at the side but it would mean physically making cut outs in the hood which I don't want to do. Otherwise it works well.

    Seeding a new filter

I'm of the belief that it will take some time for the filter bacteria to colonise the media in the Oase as it's a big jump. Also the water volume of the tank is a big jump.

New filter for 120x60x50 hightech tank

My setup isn't high energy but I have the exact same dimensions as you. I use an Eheim 2217 and an Eheim 2213 (+ a Hydor Koralia 1600). The flow is great, and I could probably get away with not needing the powerhead if I upgraded the 2213 to a 2215 or 2217. So maybe another Eheim? Unless you...

Hi guys, I have a conundrum. I bought some stainless steel lily pipes for my Eheim 2213 which uses 12mm tubing and it works great. So I decided to get a set for my Eheim 2217. Problem is the 2217 uses a 12mm outflow but 16mm intake. I bought the 16mm lily pipes because supposedly you can cause...

I used to own a Fluval Roma 200 and had most success with the 'Plan A' setup with the spray bar on the left off the tank. Expert at nothing, dab hand at many.
