    Decent stand plans..

Yeah more than strong enough, I made a ADA style cabinet for a 60x40x40 a few years ago out of 18mm MDF which I laminated with that nice sticky back plastic stuff lol Many years ago I made a cabinet for a 6x2x2ft out of 18mm ply.

    IKEA Besta Cabinet

The signature cabinets as far as I am aware are made from MDF where as the Ikea stuff is just chipboard which is no where near strong enough alone. I made mine from 18mm MDF and it supports 140kg ish with eash and has even survived being slid across the room with the full tank on.

If you are thinking about doing this don't lol

Well.................. I got as far as putting the back/side and base together. Made a mess of that so gave up lol It was still a success for me as I quit before running out of patience and throwing the damn thing out the window for once pmsl I will end up using the panes for sump baffles at...

I plan on a 4mm bead of silicone that when compressed against the 6mm glass will make a 2mm thick bond with minimal oozing and wiping lol

Just waiting for the silicone to arrive off ebay then I will get it back together :)

If you are thinking about doing this don't lol

Got it all off now down to the smear with a blade, now will just soak it in white spirit for an hour or so and scrub off the residue :) I thought it would be so much easier than it actually was lol

If you are thinking about doing this don't lol

Decided to keep my little cube but take it apart and re build it as not happy with the silicone work...........Well what a fantastic idea that was not! Taking the tank apart was hard enough but now slicing off the silicone from the panes of glass......well what a pain in the **** this is...

Thanks, the cabinet is really easy to make mate took me about 2 hours I guess then about an hour to stick the laminate on. Measuring and drilling the pilot holes is what takes the time plus I had to keep sticking my drill battery on charge lol

I can get a gloss black 3050x1300 sheet of formica and 1L of adhesive for £90.29 inc delivery which would only make the cabinet £130ish so still a price I would be happy with.

DIY Project DIY ADA'esk cabinet 610x510x636

Depends what I go for but between £40 - £80 I guess a sheet 2500x1250 ish. Need to get an actual price from the place I will use but my guess is from prices I have seen other places. As I only need a piece 2240x660 it may be cheaper anyway, so over all I expect the cabinet to cost about £100...

The laminate will be in one piece not including the doors obviously with a 50mm lap on the top with self adhesive felt on the top for the tank to sit on so no joins and a nice clean finish :) Still cant make my bloody mind up on LED's or x4 or even x8 T5's lol It will be marine so need plenty...

I was thinking about using sunk hinges but don't fancy paying £20 for a bit to make the sink for them to sit in so have just used magnetic latches which work fine. I may change to sunk hinges as well as the magnetic grips in the future though. Just finished the first coat of PVA.......

Drinks cabinet as a stand - what weight can it take?

  Oops my bad, I blame the fosters
  44. Danny

Drinks cabinet as a stand - what weight can it take?

You could always try the sit test lol Sit on the cabinet and see how it goes, 1L = 1LB 14LB = 1ST 91L = approx 6.5ST
  45. Danny

Drinks cabinet as a stand - what weight can it take?

Just a 2x2 block similar to the legs is all it would take to support the middle from the underside of the cabinet.
  46. Danny

Drinks cabinet as a stand - what weight can it take?

I would put a 1x1 in the centre of both the front and back and a 2x2 under the bottom of the cabinet in the centre to spread the load personally for the bigger tank just to be safe.
  47. Danny

Drinks cabinet as a stand - what weight can it take?

Does the cabinet have any central support? if not it is a lot of weight sitting in the middle of a piece of wood. Get a brace through the middle and a middle foot added and it will be fine.

    Removing tank braces

From what I read yes you can but only fill the water to 1cm below the rim as that is where the silicone is at its weakest point.

    Removing tank braces

After reading a few threads from google last night and an old one on here I am in two minds now as the sound of it bowing so much concerns me.....
  50. Danny

    Removing tank braces

Ok, guess that tips me over the edge in deciding to do it lol Tank will look much better without them, I will leave it in the garden for a day or two once filled as I guess if it will explode it will happen quickly ( I hope anyway )
  51. Danny

    Removing tank braces

Ok cool, how long did you have the tank set up for and how long before you noticed it had bowed?

    Removing tank braces

Just got home with the clearseal 2x12x15 and as I knew it has two braces one along the front and one along the back, I am guessing to stop the glass bowing and exploding. My question is this, my 2x12x15 jewel does not have these braces and is 5mm glass, the clearseal is 4mm glass, I would like...

The ultimate DIY spray bar, your opinion please

I am thinking of making a full surface spray bar, In the dodgy picture below I have added the possible extra pipe work in black and the red will be water flow, I will have the water flow over the surface and not running off the rim of the tank, I could either point the spray straight down or...

Removing the bottom trim off Fluval Uno tank?

Hello guys, First question for you, have any of you removed the bottom plastic trim from any Fluval Uno tank? I have an old 600 that I will be setting up as a Shrimp tank and wanting to remove the skirt. I do not think it does much to stop the tank exploding but after a second opinion...
