    Ammonia Problems

What are your intentions for this tank after cycling? Using ammonia to cycle a tank that will be planted could be a waste of your time and money. Dave.

Sudden rise in High PH, tried everything

I like to term things such as this as a non event. Those of us injecting CO2 are probably experiencing swings >1. Dave.

    Ammonia and Nitrite problems

Hi Simon. I think I recognise your name from TFF. You will need to change your mind set from the TFF way a little, if you want a truly successful planted tank. There is a sticky in the planted section of TFF, outlining why it isn`t necessary to cycle a planted tank. Try as I have on TFF, I...

    No KH reading confussed!?

End of.... :D Too many forums out there will have you messing about needlessly with kH. Don`t bother in your case. Dave.

    Nicks off the scale 'results'

I understand what you are saying Tom. If you feel this was an issue, then just add the Zeolite as the last stage of filtration, giving the developing bacteria first dibs, which is pretty much what I do. Its primary use for me is to keep the ammonia low at the start of an immature tank, as part...

    Nicks off the scale 'results'

As a keen user of Zeolite, I am going to have to totally disagree with the remarks about it preventing the filter from cycling. How can what is essentially filter media, charged with ammonia, be anything less than a perfect home for a developing nitrifying colony? Remove the Zeolite Nick, and...

How do I cycle my new tank ?

If I were you, I would get the rotting prawn out and just focus on getting the plants thriving. I have always found that a healthy planted tank will produce its own nitrifying colony without any poisonous additives. Dave.

How do I cycle my new tank ?

No offence dude, but that sounds like a pretty disgusting way to start up a planted tank (rotting prawns, ). I set my tanks up the same way as Darrel. Concentrating on getting the plants established will result in a cycled tank. Dave.

Adding Magnesium (epsom salts) to my hard water

Do you know for sure that your tap water is low on Mg? With a GH of 19, there should most likely be a fair amount of Mg present, although it is possible for it to be low. Adding Mg will increase the GH. Dave.

    Phosphate buffers

Paul, if you still have your doubts about phosphates in the aquarium, use the above question to start a new thread. State your reasons/theories for using it and, hopefully, we all may find out something of interest. Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

I suspect you only do this when you have the final word. You are right on this one chris, I should have given this thread a more appropriate title. You are right on this one too chris. I have spent many years moving with my job, being trained up by so called "experienced"...

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

No worries Mr Madrid. This thread didn`t really go in the direction I hoped. I will just have to follow my own observations. Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

I have no problems at all with the tone of your thread Chris. :D However, I do take great exception to the above comment. I have been accused of being lazy and can`t be bothered to dechlorinate, a cheapskate, and now I don`t care about my fish. I started this thread to see if anybody had any...

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

This is what I am wondering though. Do we do it because everybody else does, and have always done so, or is it genuinely a necessary process. I have my doubts as to its importance, to be honest. Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

But as I have pointed out on this thread, it is nothing to do with saving money. :D Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

From what I understand, chloramines do not evaporate away. Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

This thread was never anything to do with cost either. Buying dechlorinator is the least of my expenses. It is also nothing to do with convenience. To get to the heart of why I started this thread, all I can say is that I have no long term observations of whether or not dechlorinating harms my...

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

I bet far more fish have been killed via CO2 than through not dechloronating. The only time any fish have died due to my stupidity is through gassing. Very few of us are so overwhelmed with a duty of care that we would give up our pressurised CO2. Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

You know me better than to speculate on unsubstantiated rubbish when this hobby is full of evidence to the contrary. :D All I did was state that I have ceased dechloronating, and with no apparent problems. As I said to Stu, I was losing shrimp long before I stopped dechloronating. I am pretty...

I haven`t been able to keep shrimp long before I stopped dechloronating. :( Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

I can smell it too on rare occassions, so I would consider dechloronating then. Other than that, I don`t think I am going to bother any more. I was always forgetting to do it anyway. Dave.

Anybody Else Given up on Dechlorinating?

After several occassions where I have forgot to dechlorinate during a water change, and then running out of the stuff without the time to buy some more in, I decided to stop. Neither during the times I forgot, nor since stopping dechlorinating totally, have I noticed any problems. So, are...

    Evaporation?

I add about 10l per week to my open topped 240l, and the walls in the house are bone dry. 8) I do have a fair amount of surface disturbance, which probably increases the rate of evaporation. Dave.

    Crystal Clear water

Purigen is not a chemical that is added to the water column. It is a resin that removes nitrogenous waste and various discolourants from the water column. I thought my water was crystal clear, the I started using Purigen. :D Dave.

    RO water

I have very soft tap water, so the only use I have for it is making my own 4dKH solution. Dave.

    RO water

Sorry, Steve! I was being flippant. :D I am referring to the water treatment plant at the power staion where I work. Dave.

    RO water

Hah! Na Na Na Na Na. I can get freebie RO at 0.02 microSiemens/cm. The only problem is, I don`t need it. Dave.

    RO water

Does anybody know the conductivity of the product? Dave.

    Whats a good GH Target?

It is possible to kill your fauna with too much CO2. Whilst the CO2 does not displace the O2 levels, fish need the CO2 concentration in the water to be lower than their metabolic levels, otherwise they can`t rid their bodies of waste CO2. :) Dave.
