What is this snail??? - Can anyone identify?

No they don't. They will eat algae and dead/dying leaves though.

    assasin snails

Bear in mind that the snails are they because there's plenty to eat. I have a few in my display tanks whereas there are loads in my fry/rearing tanks as I feed them heavily. And if the snails weren't there then all that food would be left rotting down until I removed it in a water change...

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

Well that's a bit worrying! I might have to get in touch with Severn Trent to see about LEad pipes in my water supply!!!

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

I was sure they had replaced it all, but equally I could be wrong too mate!

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

There will almost certainly be copper in your house Sam that the mains water will pass through on the way to the tap. And while the tap is off it will sit in this copper. However as long as your water is alkaline (which it has to be from the mains) the copper shouldn't dissolve. I thought...

Do my shrimp need a slight change to water chemistry?

I keep rainbow shrimp in RO water with a little RO Right added. This gives me water with 0dKH and 3dGH. The shrimp are fine and breed merrily. If your fish and shrimp are happy at the moment then I wouldn't worry about it. If you see any having problems moulting then maybe you need to up the...

    What are these???

They're completely harmless and are very good at surviving. Their eggs survive dessication so they6 can appear to spontaneously arrive in new tanks. I have them in little containers of moss and they must have been transferred somehow from one to another. On shrimp safe fish that'd eat them...

    What are these???

They're Ostracods Paulo. Otherwise known as seed shrimp. At least they look like it in the photo.

Defintely a Tortoise! No flippers! (Unlike it's owner who has it seems!!!!! :D :D :D ) Did a kid drop it in?

shrimp compatability with Koralia flow pump

It's a different 180 from the one with the 2128 on. The Koralia is in a Rio 180 with the Juwel internal (which I like! :D ). The flow from the Koralia is very different to a filter or conventional powerhead; the flow is more diffuse and has less velocity so is a more gentle mass movement of...

shrimp compatability with Koralia flow pump

I've seen small shrimp on the pump casing swim away fine as the current draw through the cage isn't that high. With the open nature of the pump and impellor design I think that a shrimplet would have a very high chance of simply being blown out a little dazed! I've certainly never seen a body...

shrimp compatability with Koralia flow pump

I've got a Koralia 1 in my 180l tank and it's certainly not too much. I think I could have gone a model higher without problems, but the 1 is fine. Get it the right way round to stop bubbles building up in it and making it noisy! Mine was making a racket until I turned it round slightly!

Yippee - I have some MTS!! (4 flavours!)

If they're retained inside the body then, strictly speaking, that's Ovivipary. Looks like Vivipary though and you know what they say, "If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and tastes like a duck it's probably a duck!".

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

I just get a range of colurs in the babies. To be honest there's one red one and a few that are a greenish colour and the rest are like little amanos. They don't change colour much. Nice little shrimp though and breeding well.

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

I've moved this into the 'Inverts' section as it's all about them Egmel. My 'other' vote is for my Rainbow shrimp. I think they're some kind of Neocaridina spp.

    Malasyan Trumpet Snails

KH, or Carbonate hardness, is not the metallic element of the salt but the basic part. As such it is a measure of the carbonate section of salts such as Calcium Carbonate, not the calcium. GH, or general hardness, is Calcium and Magnesium cations in the water. It's assumed when measuring KH...

    Hydra

What foods do you feed in there? I've only ever had problem with Hydra in tanks where I fed newly hatched brine shrimp regularly and cutting that out led to them disappearing.

    Synadontis and Japonica?

I assume you mean Amano shrimp when you say japonica? If so your Synodontis will polish that off in no time at all. Aquatic invertebrates are a major part of Synodontis eupterus's diet.

    Planaria attacking shrimp!!!

I didn't say they were definitely caused by overfeeding I said, "they can be a sign of overfeeding". If you're making sure you aren't then it's unlikely that that is the cause! A few are probably present in every aquarium but lots would be sign of some extra amount of nutrition for them of...

    Planaria attacking shrimp!!!

They sound like they may be Nematodes which are very widespread. They can be a sign of overfeeding so make sure that the fish are eating all the food you're putting in.

    snail control

Lots of snails can be a sign of overfeeding. Maybe try cutting back the food for a week or so and see if that helps? Otherwise maybe a trap might be better than adding a fish? Just a container with some food in that fish can't access will soon have the snails filling it overnight.

    Snails vs Shrimp

It sounds a bit like the organic wastes in that tank may be too high. Your best bet to removing the algae might be to really up the water changes. Your fish will love the extra water and the algae will be removed at every water change if you syphon it out. Do you have any plants in there...

    Snails vs Shrimp

I can't imagine any shrimp surviving for too long in a tank with Tiger Barbs! Maybe some large Amanos might but they'd be very vulnerable when they shed. As to snails, Nerites seem to be a good choice. What kind of algae is it? Maybe you should stick with other algae eating fish? SAEs...

    Planaria attacking shrimp!!!

Some larger Planaria do have a pointed, almost arrow shaped head so it could be that. Most tape worms are much larger, almost exclusively enteric parasites and have distinctly segmented bodies.

Best deal for cherries on EBAY

I've sent fish and recieved shrimps in bags packed into polyboxes. For the fish I used a couple of heatpacks to keep them warm and then sent them overnight delivery. I think breather bags are better as they are completely filled with water so the creatures can't slosh around as much, but I...

    Uninvited guests (Snails)

I've got them in my new tank and they seem to do no harm whatsoever. Both they and the ramshorns in there spend most of their time grazing the glass and rocks and there are no problems. When you want to get rid of them the best way I've found is dropping the KH and GH and then they simply...

    kribs and rainbows?

I think any fish that can fit the shrimp in their mouths will eat shrimp. After all most of the fish we keep eat a diet of largely aquatic invertebrates in the wild. So 5" fish with ordinary mouths will polish off every one they can catch I would imagine.
