Journal My New Filter and Pond - Lots of pictures

It's all still running well thanks guys. Will try and remember to take some photos when I'm over my folks next time. Future plans are to convert the filter on this pond to run on air like my new pond as it's much more efficient. We will keep the skimmer running on a pump to power the...

    Marginal ideas

Iris laevigata Variegata is a must for me - it has very neatly variegated broad leaves and then blue flowers. In the marsh marigolds you can get double yellow and white versions too which are rather nice and a little more unusual. Another one I like, is Zandeschia aetheopica - Arum lilies -...

Martin's right not all koi are worth a lot of money. Mine have cost me from £10 upwards (most significantly upwards!). All of them are British too, bred from very high quality Japanese and own bred broodstock by a breeder in Weston Super Mare. The pond is netted at the moment to prevent fish...

Thank you. I've still not added any more fish due to the cold weather. The water is also still green but I'm not adding a UV as you just end up with a ton of blanketweed then. IME the bloom will die out as the filter matures. Filter is running brilliantly all on air. With the air done off...

Well to build one with my filtration system I don't think you would as it's different and not "off the shelf". Generally you can reckon on a pound per gallon if you're doing it yourself and £2-£3 per gallon for a professionally built one. And mine's a 5,500 gallon pond. By the time it's...

    Algae question

Keeping a koi pond algae free by good plant growth is akin to keeping a planted tank algae free while it has a pair of oscars and a shoal of silver dollars in it. The koi are gross feeders that produce constant, large amounts of ammonia that a large filter needs to deal with as effectively as...

    Opinions on pressurised filters

Gotta agree with foxfish - bigger is always better in pond filters! Find the largest container you can fit and disguise and then make that into your filter. If you could fit two chambers in then even better - you can make one a static K1 filter and keep the other fluidised to act as a...

    Opinions on pressurised filters

Yep! (Well yes in my opinion anyway!) Like all commercial filters they are hopelessly over-rated for the size of pond - you'd need to double or more the size of the filter for starters. Secondly they use foam. Foam is a great media when it's kept clean but it should be cleaned really...

    Opinions on pressurised filters

I would avoid these types of filters if you have a decent stocking level and 4 koi will produce a fair bot of waste as they grow. I can see you're a bit limited for space but I'd look at a larger container filled with K1 media. I built one from a small waterbutt for a mate on his mixed pond...

My ugly pond- advice needed in choosing filter

The pump in your pond is just a pump to move water, like a powerhead in a planted tank. Filtration in a pond is broken down into three areas. An ultraviolet unit will kill the free-floating green algae and flocculate it together where it can be filtered out of the water. Mechanical filtration...

My ugly pond- advice needed in choosing filter

First thing you'll need to do is work out the volume of your pond and then decide what fish and how many you want to keep. Pond Protein Skimmer?

There are a number of freshwater skimmers for ponds. They do work but they aren't as efficient so pond skimmers are made much bigger to compensate. If you google then you'll find a few pond protien skimmers or fractionators. One of the best is made as a trickle tower with a way to skim the...

    Repairing concrete waterfall

You might be best taking the waterfall apart and lining it with a butyl / greenseal liner and then replacing the rocks and plants on top of that to disguise it. Why would you want them? Generally they don't really add too much to a pond IMHO, it's not like they will eat all the blanketweed or anything. If you still feel the need to add them then Ramshorn or Greater Pond snails are usually for sale at most garden centres that sell pond fish and plants.

    Dealing with the green

Darrel's suggestions for using plants or an area for zooplankton are great as long as you aren't highly stocked or have koi. 'Fraid not! They will stand outside a pond and stab at fish. A deep pond with vertical sides and no shelves will reduce their chances to catch fish but it can't guarantee safe fish as they might come up to the top in reach of the heron! My pond is partly raised with a vertical wall on the...

    Journal Dan's Pond

Looking good Dan. I like a koi pond with plants! As to the filter, forget the foam! You'll be cleaning it so often you'll be swearing and cursing every week. Go for a static K1 filter in a water barrel. It will still need regular cleaning but that involves turning an air pump on and then...

    Starting new pond

Well if it were me I wouldn't buy a filter like this as I hate cleaning out foam!!! I find it such a hassle and a chore and then I don't do it! Don't get me wrong it will do a decent enough job on a pond with goldfish and the odd koi maybe but if you stock a lot of fish you'll be forever...

You must make sure no run off from the sleepers can get into the pond though Tourney. That means running the liner all the way under the decking to cover the tops of the sleepers completely. If you want to be even more careful then you could also seal the sleepers to and front with Clear G4...

    DIY Pond filters

If you want to clear a pond Dan then a K1 filter is the way to go I think. By using a plastic water tank with a strainer to keep the K1 in you can clear the pond in a day or two! I'm just about to edit the original post with construction ideas! (I posted and then edited so I don't lose all...
