I never increased the dosing. If you're seeing signs of deficiencies then increasing it would be a good idea but I'm not sure you'd need to double it! Each tank will vary slightly depending on plant load, growth rate and a thousand and 1 other things so you will have to play it by ear a little.
I think you're nearly right Egmel, but I don't think it's just the hardness but the TDS that is a more important factor. I don't like to have the GH, KH and other dissolved solids swinging around in a tank, but I don't mind pH swinging around due to CO2. Bear in mind that if your pH swings due...
Glad it has helped! This is just one way to do it though, but it's worked well for me!
lljdma06, this tank has just been converted over to a Tanganyikan scape. It was still working fine but I'm a lot busier at work at the moment and didn't have time to keep the scape looking as good as it...
You keep the whole set up out of the water and put soapy around the joints where it might leak. If there are any leaks then you'll get large bubbles inflating from the leaky joints like blowing bubbles!
My one from AM is preset and it has no main valve to adjust the pressure. You just attach it to the FE and then adjust via the needle valve, easy-peasy!
A lot of the links were to AquaEssentials website, one of our sponsors. They have just updated their website so I imgaine that has ruined lots of the links - I'll try to update them at some point when I have time (don't hold your breath!!!!!). If you go to their site and search for the product...
Dry weight in a scientific context such as this article refers to is generally the dessicated weight of a sample. To obtain such a weight the sample is dried at a low heat until it's weight ceases to drop. This is then a sign that all the liquid water has been removed from the sample. It can...
Clive would say it's a waste of money, but I'm not too sure! I wouldn't worry about it Matt, it's great stuff on it's own. I do tend to not dose my tanks for days (or even weeks!) at a time!
Thanks Matt.
Personally I'd never do that. It's such great stuff to plant into and looks so good that why would you want to cover it?!!! Have to say I'd use Powersand and mulm under Aquasoil again as I seem to be getting much better results in the tank that uses it as opposed to the one where...
Basically you need to place the diffuser where it, or the bubbles from it, are in the greatest flow to be distributed throughout the tank. The best bet is to try moving it around slightly after you have set the tank up as each tank will vary slightly depending on the decor and plant mass as...
Just to add to Clive's response I add some salts to my RO water to provide the GH. I simply add a teaspoon per 25l water container. Despite many people's successes with tap water I won't go back to it as I find I have a lot less problems in my tanks since I switched to it. My main reason, as...
Thanks very much guys; glad it's appreciated.
Like Andy says as soon as you add one dose to the tank it becomes so distributed that even if the phosphate and iron come together it's in such small quantities that it shouldn't be a problem. I tend to add the micros to one side of the tank, let...
Cheers guys. I wrote it on Word first then pasted across. Didn't go completely smoothly! James has uploaded a slicker version to the articles section of the website that Dan sorted out, improved all the photos and drew the diagrams for. Thanks for the help guys.
Setting up a 'higher' tech planted tank
***To see the article look here in our articles section***
I want to start this article by stressing that there are literally thousands of ways to set up a planted tank. This is just one, fairly simple way to get a system that will work and work well if...
Loving the article Clive. I'm assuming the Nanochromis transvestitus are yours? How long have you had them and any luck breeding them? (or keeping them from killing each other actually!) What size tank are they in?
Great write up! I've been toying with using an extinguisher with reg from Aquatic magic and this tells answers every single question I've thought of about them, thanks very much, invaluable!
I've heard on APC that PTFE tape shouldn't be used as it can occassionally prevent the rubber washer...
