:D Excellent, that's exactly what they are, there was I hoping I had baby mussels! Right, now I know they're safe I can put some cherry shrimp across into this tank. :)

About 2mm long these guys have a hard shell and small antennae from one end. They are independent movers, sometimes by picking up the current other times in a more determined manner but I've as yet to work out how. Other occupants in the tank are some Malaysian trumpet snails, some tubifex worms...

    Tragedy in CRS tank

This isn't always the case, my MA always has nice and fat little ottos, mine came from there and they've all been fine :) I think it depends on the staff in any store, you may find your odds are better in a non-chain store but I wouldn't say that it's the best indicator. The best way to...

    Tragedy in CRS tank

Hmmm, I think there are 2 problems here, the first is that the fish were not in good nick when you got them. The second was that you added them directly to a tank with expensive livestock. We've all done it, a quarantine tank is a hassle to set up, but if you intend to keep expensive stock...

Damn those reply stealing gremlins. It may sound stupid but have you tried the back button in your browser, sometimes that magically remembers what was typed in text boxes. *EDIT* just noticed the time difference between these last two posts, probably a bit late for the back button

Conundrum... Inverts Dying - Water Parameters?

I noted those too Clive, makes me laugh slightly as I always used a filter in my old place and haven't since I moved because the water tastes better. Beginning to wish it wasn't in storage so I could use it now... however it is parts per billion and well within allowable limits so it...

Conundrum... Inverts Dying - Water Parameters?

Re: Conundrum... Well the shrimps are fine with 20°C so that shouldn't be a problem for them. I don't know about nerites but most snails will survive the temp difference of a couple of degrees for at least while, they do get posted after all! Lower temperatures should cause the water to be...

Conundrum... Inverts Dying - Water Parameters?

Re: Conundrum... Hi Chris, They were fully acclimatised over several hours and I bought about quarter of a tank of water with me in a jerry can (with 'fish water only' written on it  ) so I don't think it was the change in water. Also it wouldn't account for my MTS which are much less...

Since moving to my sisters I have lost all of my shrimp (more than I could count even during the move) and all of my Malaysian Trumpet snails. However my apple snails and all my fish are fine :? The only thing which has changed with the move is the water as she's with a different supplier...

what clean up crew can I have?

They're the good ones, my green tank will attest to that... However I'm not sure how long they'll survive with the loaches, but maybe they'll breed and and provide a live food source for your loaches.

Introducing cherry shimp to my main tank

I found that the bottle necks were too big in my original DIY ones and I caught fish as well as shrimp. All of the fish I caught then passed on, I wont be using that method again, next time I'll be making sure the entry holes are only big enough for the shrimp.
  17. Egmel

    Shrimps and Snails

Snails are also a no-go if you're using any flubendazole based wormer, it sticks around in the water for ages, I tried what you're suggesting and kept my MTS out for a couple of weeks, they all died when I added them back in :(

weird life form found in my tank.

Re: YoYo Loaches - solution found But like many loaches they also grow quite big, most places say about 5-6" and they like to be in groups. So not ideal for smaller tanks ;) Botia sidthimunki, the dwarf or chain loach is often a better option as it only gets to 2".

What is this snail??? - Can anyone identify?

If we're talking about the pond snails then I would disagree, they do eat plants and can be quite voracious given half a chance.
  24. Egmel

    spixi snails - plant eaters?

In my experience they do eat plants, even when well fed! However unlike others like pond snails they only nibble little holes rather than chomping off entire leaves.
  25. Egmel

    nerites

So long as you can't see snail through the shell it should be ok. It's because they're all wild caught. Mine have bit's which are a bit white in places too.

Leave them alone for a bit and they'll soon be out and about. You'll probably find that the inside of your log is full of algae that they're feasting on, when they've finished it off they'll be out to look for more.
  30. Egmel

    assasin snails

I would recommend feeding less alongside manual removal. However efficient/lovely some snail eating fish are, they're not usually a good solution. For a start they treat the symptom rather than the cause and secondly it means you are stocking your tank according to a problem rather than...

    Shrimp and the lunar cycle?

Animals can note changes in the climate and other natural phenomena that we can't even comprehend. It's like the fact that the turtle eggs all hatch at the same time even though they're buried under sand! It wouldn't surprise me if there were a preponderancy to moult all at the same time, I...

    Snails!

My nerites tend to stick to the hardscape and tank walls rather than clambering all over the leaves. That's not to say they don't use them just that they seem to prefer the hardscape. I've got a couple of the bee-staghorn ones too, while they're really cool they do tend to look a little lost...

    Iodine for shedding?

I did a bit more reading on this over the past 24 hrs, there is a lot of (often first hand) anecdotal evidence to suggest that adding 1 drop of reef iodide supplement per 10g of water when I do a water change may help with shrimp health and shouldn't do any harm to my fish or snails. Since I...

    Iodine for shedding?

That's a good idea, I'll have a look through AE's shrimp food options. *edit* reading what they say it looks like most of them get their iodine from kelp etc, so maybe I'll just increase the number of algae wafers I put in. I had dropped the number about a week ago to try and reduce the pest...

    Iodine for shedding?

I'm losing shrimp during their moult, the shedding skin splits in a couple of places but doesn't come off completely and they die. It's not that I'm seeing half sheds, I'm finding shrimp bodies halfway through a moult. My water report doesn't mention iodine, though it appears our hardness is...
  44. Egmel

    Iodine for shedding?

I seem to remember reading that iodine helps shrimps shed. I ask because I found a second half shed dead shrimp this morning and I wonder if it might be because my water is too hard and they're having difficulty shedding properly. Any recommendations?
  45. Egmel

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

I seem to remember that new copper pipes were possibly likely to cause a problem but once they'd oxidised you shouldn't need to worry. Especially in hard water areas where most of the pipe is likely to be coated with limescale anyway! Not sure on the reality though, I suppose you can't tell...

Yippee - I have some MTS!! (4 flavours!)

That's basically the gist. They may have hitched a ride on 'mum's' shell, my babies quite often hang on to the neck of the parent snail until they're a bit bigger.
  51. Egmel

Yippee - I have some MTS!! (4 flavours!)

Congratulations :) MTS are fairly small any way, they only get to about an inch long when fully grown. Cherries have eggs but they keep hold of them until they hatch. If a female is carrying eggs you should be able to see them yellow on her back legs.

    African Dwarf Frog

  53. Egmel

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

Hmm, this seems to be suggesting that MTS could very easily survive in our waterways and we need to be really careful when disposing of those babies which get sucked up with the water during a water change...
  54. Egmel

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

I've had MTS survive in the post for a few days, it does depend on how they are packaged but generally they are quite hardy little things and should be ok when you get them.
  55. Egmel

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

They are cool! Ping pong ball size you say, so similar to apple snails. Well I shall bear this in mind and when I have my next tank set up maybe it'll be with snowballs instead of cherries :) I thought most shrimp liked hard water so they can build their shells, from this I'm guessing I was...
  56. Egmel

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

I hope you manage it, I really enjoy my RCS but I just can't afford many of the more 'exotic' species. Do these eat your plants? These are new to me, do you have any photos? Are they plant eaters? How big do they get?
  57. Egmel

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

Ditto, mine have never been acclimatised, just dropped straight in.
  58. Egmel

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

I see you are building a shrimp empire! If I hadn't just filled my tank with many cherries I'd ask how much you sell your snowballs for. The cardinal sulawesis sound cool, though I guess from the tone of your post that they are not the cheapest or easiest of shrimp to obtain. Shame as I to...
  59. Egmel

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

Ahh, that would be the funky orange dash I saw in the photos I looked up. That's a shame that they can't be kept with cherries as the red and white would look really good together. Though if you can get the blue morphs with the white then they would look very cool :) Hmm, add time to that...

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

Hi Ade, Thought you might have some interesting inhabitants. Did you go out hunting for these or did they come in on some plants? I'm curious, why are these pests? All I found out about them is that they are a prehistoric species. How did they get into your tank? There seem to be lots of...
  61. Egmel

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

They stay in the water :) Yup, though I'd say I see less of my mahogany ones than I do my standard MTS. I think they're even more nocturnal!
  62. Egmel

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

That's a shame, were they young shrimp? If so I'm not suprised, young shrimp will make a tasty snack for most fish. Cheers Ed Ooooh, they're the chameleon ones aren't they? They display different colours depending on their surroundings. Do you see this behaviour much in your tank?
  63. Egmel

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

Steve said it was a parasite problem so I'm guessing it was flubenzanol (sp?) which is shrimp safe but snail lethal.
  64. Egmel

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

I was watching one of mine this morning, he was shuffling through the sand and he really reminded me of a wild boar snuffling for truffles! I find them really interesting to watch... but of course I could just be strange
  65. Egmel

What critters do you have in your tank(s)?

Just wanted to find out what the most common 'critters' were that people kept. I know the list is incomplete but the poll is limited to 10 options so I tried to pick the ones that would come up most often. If you've got something unusual then it'd be great to hear what and maybe see some photos :)
  66. Egmel

Should I add MTS?? - Yeay or Nay?

I would agree with a1matt, they do all the good things people say they do but once you've got them, they're there for good. As for them looking ugly, I really think that's personal opinion, and also down to water type. I've had 2 or 3 starter colonies over the years and they've all arrived...

    Malasyan Trumpet Snails

It depends a lot on your water. I have very hard water so my pH is high as is my KH. This means there's plenty of calcium in the water column already. If you notice the shells starting to pale and erode or the MTS losing their tips then you either need to feed them food with high calcium...

    where to find nerites

You could try emailing the snail shop, they had some small staghorns left when I asked last time, no ruby nerites though :( Alternatively some LFS's stock them so you could trawl round the local places.
  74. Egmel

    nerites

Agreed, enjoy :D Thanks for the psudeo offer but it really wouldn't be worth it, I've only got a small tank so would only be after a couple. I might just have a quick look in the LFS' local to my parents whilst I'm at home-home this weekend :)
  75. Egmel

    nerites

Wow, which store was this? They're going to be miles from me but someone else might be nearby and want to get some (if you haven't bought them all by now!)

    Malasyan Trumpet Snails

Wasn't really suggesting you should, just highlighting the likely reasons why yours are lacking their tips :) As to lifespan (sorry LD we've slightly hijacked your thread)most internet sources quote >5yrs so I guess the answer is no-one knows but your one isn't the only one to be this old :)
