    How to stop algae in sand?

    I just swill it about with each water change, other than that my MTS keep it turned over and it doesn't go too green on top. Maybe you should try treating the cause rather than the symptom, what sort of algae is it, could you be lacking some nutrient or using too much light?

    This type of algae is quite common in a newly set up tank. See this page and the section on diatoms/brown algae. I'm with LD though, if you've got high light and CO2 then you're going to need ferts relatively soon.

    Unless you're using James' all-in-one version with the ascorbic acid and potassium sorbate which stops this from happening. Both are readily available on ebay :)

    I had this for a long while when the tank was only lightly planted and I wasn't using any ferts or CO2, I got it from George Farmer's pinned post on TFF Maybe this is out of date now as it's at least a couple of years old, if so I'm sure he'll update it if you PM him, he's probably forgotten...
