White vinegar and kitchen tissue :)
  4. Gary Nelson

    Awsome cleaning tool

I normally use a bit of white vinegar on some kitchen tissue, a quick wipe and it's gone

Unknow white stuff on twinstar nano

Bleach won't do anything, just use one Oust sachet and add a little water in a cup (remove the rubber sucker) and leave to soak - you will see the lime scale start to bubble and dissolve straight the way, give it a couple of hours and then just rinse it well under the tap.... Job done :)
  7. Gary Nelson

Unknow white stuff on twinstar nano

It's 100% lime scale - I get it on mine. I soak mine in Oust lime scale remover for kettles/irons.... 2 hrs in that and it's like new again. I normally do mine every two months or so.

Well spotted - we need to educate them more though that they are not Marine displays nor Goldfish in them!.... good publicity though:thumbup:
  15. Gary Nelson

    Twinstar..what is it?

The mist from the twinstar only comes on for about 15-20 seconds and is dissolved in less than a minute.... So it is not really that bad :)
  16. Gary Nelson

    Twinstar..what is it?

Yes I've had mine in about 3 days now and i did my water change earlier... The tank glass hardly dirty this time?! Seems to be doing something :) On a plus side, my Mrs loves it! She loves the mist underwater... I told her if I got the bigger tank I'm looking at, then we could have 2 running! ;)

Your personal aquascaping/aquarium highlights from 2013

A great idea George. I think mine was being featured in PFK with my old corner tank, I felt like a star and really proud (a tiny bit of fame lol) - it was great to meet Nathan & Neil from PFK too. I still enjoy getting that issue out and having a read :) Another highlight is making some more...

Re Scaping the "Bit in the Middle"

Another option is to soften the harsh line of the two substrates - if it was me I'd plant something like Staurogyne rubescens along the the left & right border lines and then plant in more taking them back into the scape/rock areas... But less densely planted towards rocks, they look nice...

Would this be too much stock in a 180l?

I'd say you will be ok on that stock... Most of it is cleaning crew, which is a good thing :)

    Twinstar..what is it?

Ok, so without me trawling through all pages, can someone explain how the device works... As in: does it go on a timer? or is it just a press of a manual button once a day?

Electric toothbrush..... Are the fully submergable?

Yes I would say so Trevor... Your tanks similar to my very first corner tank then - you will only have 500mm to reach down now then with that in hand :)
  24. Gary Nelson

Electric toothbrush..... Are the fully submergable?

Yes, I have used one loads of times on rock and even bits of wood  no problem at all. PS, I did not tell the mrs I was using hers though!:rage:

Really? must say im a bit tempted.... I seem to be reading more good than bad about them now.

    Twinstar..what is it?

Very interesting to see Viktors results.... Anything that makes rocks come clean as well as some algae disappear is welcome in my tank! :)

    Difference between TMC ADA SIGNATURE

This is all very well and yes everyone will say that what they own is 'simply the best ever' but surely it's what you put inside that counts? I bought my TMC on recommendations from other members, the dimensions of it suited what I was after and considered that what I had beforehand it was a...

    Difference between TMC ADA SIGNATURE

George is correct in thinking that the TMC 600x450x450 only come with black silicone as I found out, although it's no hardship as is so neat and very litle of it :)

    Difference between TMC ADA SIGNATURE

    Water changes

I always put my water out the night before water change and preheat to 22 degrees with a couple of squirts of Prime just to be on the safe side - after all Prime lasts ages and its just not worth the risk without it.

    Surface scum

This is nearly always due from plants, basically when they don't have enough nutrients and co2 - open top tanks are really no different to closed ones - yes a skimmer will help... but the plants are telling you that they are not happy. How do your plants look in general?

Yes it is the 105... Well spotted! It was the standard light unit, but I modified it with extra LEDs... Basically doubled what it had.
  47. Gary Nelson

Been given a Baby BiOrb (30l).

I changed the original media (ceramic) to a medium sized pea gravel instead... you need a larger gravel as the filter will drag in smaller bits and it will block. I think I placed a circle of the original media around the filter area and then added the pea gravel around that, I found this more...

    Aquatics live cancelled.

I've just read on Facebook on Maidenhead Aquatics post news of this and one of the comments from someone is " I never knew events like this were on " .... The Bio Bubble - OMG that is awful

OMG! this is not a good idea :( - did they think that even if you if you were to keep fish in it that they may get trapped in the corrugated sides if it was raised and lowered?
  54. Gary Nelson

    What temp

24 is ideal and most fish will be happy at that, your Ph should be around 7, maybe a touch lower if you are injecting CO2
  55. Gary Nelson

    What temp

22-24 - Ph does not matter to be honest, it's far more important to keep your water peramitters as stable as you can though.
  56. Gary Nelson

    Is Purigen safe?

I've been using it for 2 years (not the same batch lol) with no problems at all - easy to re-generate too, a great product! :)

    So Very Disappointed With Tropica

I can't say too much on these myself as I've not used them, although I have to say what I have read about them they seem very popular - like Nath says, do do end up with more plants, but you have to grown um.... PS, just noticed, where are all the smileys/emotcons gone :(
  58. Gary Nelson

    Lettuce clip

I don't have an open top tank, but if I did and the DIY person that I am... I probably look at getting some sort off very thin stainless steal spike or bar, (say 9-12" long) and just put a small bend at each end - one to hang over the edge of the glass and the other end to skewer the...

Which One would YOU buy ?

3 choices are better than 2  they look the Business in white as well! although looking at them on-line it looks like most places are only taking per-orders, as I think they were first on show at interpet a few months back

    Easy WC ?

I use a tiny Ehiem pump with some 16/22 hose in a 60l barrel, I've connected up a couple of elbow joints to the pipe and then an old intake basket so it just hangs over the edge of my tank and into the water, I'll take a pic on my next water change to show you - I just drain water out, switch...
  72. Gary Nelson

    Cleaning light reflectors?

I normally use lemon juice that you add to pancakes - obviously clean them off the light and away from the tank, i just wipe them over with that and a kitchen tissue then wipe over with water.... should come up like new then
  73. Gary Nelson

safe to paint aquarium background with livestock inside?

I used black board paint, wilkinsons finest, it's water based and with 2 light coats with a brush it's perfect! Let the 1st coat dry properly though or you will end up pulling it back off the glass on the 2nd coat! I've found this really durable too once on and fully dry.
