Journal My best low-tech 'scape so far

Hi Dean. It will be in a PFK magazine back issue. I honestly can't remember which one I'm afraid. I will try to find out for you and reply on here if I have success. :)

It's their complete soil. I think it's the same as the original, just rebranded.

Ah, yes, you raise a good point! Thank you. Please allow me to clarify... I do know the approx parameters of my tap water in terms of hardness, at least, because I have a conductivity meter built-in to a filter on another aquarium. I have very hard water but the soil helps to counteract that...

Thanks. GH - No idea KH - No idea PO4 - No idea Fe - No idea NO3 - No idea 3x day - dry and frozen The odd squirt of Colombo Pro Ferfilizer. Not sure ppm values. The LEDs are supplied with the Superfish Expert 70 tank. They're cheap but I don't know specs. I think the lesson here is that you...

Hi Alexander - excellent questions, thank you. I top up with tap water, but it hardly needs any because it has a tight lid. The filter is cleaned once a month or so. Fish load is quite high for a small aquarium. 6 cherry barbs, 4 rocket killifish, 6 pentazona barbs, 2 chocolate gouramis, 6...

Thanks guys. The PAR is less than 10 at the substrate... Around 5 in the corners. :)

Thanks all. :) 10 hours on this. It's very low lighting so the photoperiod is longer to give the plants enough. Usually I run 6-9 hours on higher energy tanks.

Hi all, I thought I'd post a quick photo of my Superfish Expert 70. No CO2 or liquid carbon. Occasional ferts (Colombo Pro) and Colombo Pro Soil. Internal filter and It hasn't had a water change in 3 months. Plants are mostly crypts, buces, Rotata and some Anubias, Cyperus. Incredibly low...

    Interview with Diana Walstad

It's just a general overview of the different methodologies out there for growing plants. Nothing groundbreaking for regular UKAPS members but newbies may learn a few things. :)

    Interview with Diana Walstad

I stumbled across this whilst researching my next article. It makes interesting reading. I have Diana's book and it's excellent, although a little too scientific for my small brain! http://acuariorosa.blogspot.co.uk/2009/ ... lstad.html

Question about soil, ammonia and water quality

Not sure but I have read and heard first-hand that it does hugely increase hardness and pH due its lime content.

Congratulations, Joe, and welcome to UKAPS! That's a really lovely set-up. Thanks for sharing guys.

My unfortunate vacation experience and "who dun it"

Very sorry for your losses, Darrel. How terrible to return to such devastation after what sounds like a lovely vacation. Two fairly obvious deductions that you've probably considered - 1) Someone used an insecticide aerosol to combat the dust mites. I suspect these would be very toxic to...

First planted tank- advice on soil please...

Welcome to UKAPS, t1gerbee! Sounds like an exciting project. Have you also considered the dry start method? I've moved this thread into the Low-Tech, El Natural section.

    DSM - non-CO2/low tech - transition questions?

Sorry, I have no experience with DSM or non-CO2 but I think it looks like a very exciting project. I would also consider leaving DSM for as long as you can. This way, once you've flooded, you'll spend more time enjoying looking at the tank in a more mature state, rather than watching painfully...

    Low tech, no co2, sump...

How about garden soil? It's what many El Natural followers use. Jeff Walmsley has run a successful 11 foot tank using rainwater, garden soil, minimal turnover and minimal water column nutrients. Different types of garden soil are more suitable than others. Maybe Diana Walstad herself will...

    Possible UKAPS booklet?

Hi Bill I whole-heartedly agree with the above. You clearly have a good grasp of the subject matter and your writing style is excellent. I think you make the ideal candidate for contributing articles for UKAPS. Thanks for your support.

I'm with you. It's all about being neat and tidy! My wife just wishes I made the same effort with the rest of the house!

    AQUA SOIL ??

Do you mean ADA Aqua Soil, or a generic aquatic compost? Low tech/El Natural tanks usually have a layer of soil on the bottom, topped with gravel. ADA Aqua Soil is generally used in 'higher-tech' set-ups associated with faster growth though more lighting, CO2 and other water column nutrients...

    Filter choice...

If I had to chose one it would be the Eheim thermo. Sounds like an interesting project, Matt. It'll make a refreshing change to see a nice big low-tech set up. Will you be running a journal?
