IME if you are only growing crypts you can pretty much use what you want. You could add fertiliser tabs near the crypts if using just plain inert gravel and they should do fine.

It's expensive for what it is. You could use soil and cap it with gravel that would be far cheaper.

I've used / use Eco-complete. I don't think a sand cap will work as the sand will work its way through the particles which are mixed in size. I capped mine with gravel once and that disappeared after a few months. If I was to do my tank again I would use something else. I'm not saying it wasn't...

It's interesting that other people are also reporting that KH values have halved although how accurate the measurements would be is up for debate. Alan, do you find that you use less Co2 since you started using this soil?

No need Roly. You could add root tabs if you wanted to but as you dose EI you have all your nutrients in the water column.

Yes you can use Eco Complete on its own. There are alternatives though that might be cheaper. You could even use root tablets in your current substrate.
