    Substrate for Crypts

IME if you are only growing crypts you can pretty much use what you want. You could add fertiliser tabs near the crypts if using just plain inert gravel and they should do fine.

    Low Tech Substrate Options

Thanks Edvert, it did cross my mind that it would be too light. Do you mean you cap your soil with sand or use sand only? Will check out Darrel's " Duckweed Index.

    Low Tech Substrate Options

Hi Folks, I'm setting up a low tec tank. I was originally going to use soil and gravel as per Tim's tutorial. I'm now thinking about using one of the aquasoils (Tropica or Dennerle etc). My question is, is the aqusoil enough on its own to sustain the tank (with added ferts) or should I use a...

    Eco comlete substrate

It's expensive for what it is. You could use soil and cap it with gravel that would be far cheaper.

    Wetlands Aquatic Compost

I followed the wise words of Tim. I set up a low tech for my sister in law and a hybrid one for myself (both ~30L). I stuck to non demanding plants and can honestly say that these, so far, are two of the most successful tanks that I've done. They've been running for about 10 weeks. Here is the...

ADA Aqua soil, Tropica Plant Growth Substrate or Eco-complete?

I've used / use Eco-complete. I don't think a sand cap will work as the sand will work its way through the particles which are mixed in size. I capped mine with gravel once and that disappeared after a few months. If I was to do my tank again I would use something else. I'm not saying it wasn't...

    Wetlands Aquatic Compost

I'm just about to try it. It is recommended in this tutorial: http://ukaps.org/forum/threads/the-soil-substrate-or-dirted-planted-tank-a-how-to-guide.18943/

    JBL ProScape Plant Soil

It's interesting that other people are also reporting that KH values have halved although how accurate the measurements would be is up for debate. Alan, do you find that you use less Co2 since you started using this soil?

    Gravel Fused / Stuck Together

Thanks for your thoughts Mick. Here is another 2 inch piece I found this morning. You'd need a hammer to break this:

    Gravel Fused / Stuck Together

One of my tanks has been running for about 4 years now with a mixture of eco complete and inert gravel. I use CO2 and EI and syphon the top of the gravel weekly. At the weekend I decided to move large piece of wood and was going to add some plants but the substrate under the wood has gone rock...

Do I need to replace my Tropica substrate after a year?

No need Roly. You could add root tabs if you wanted to but as you dose EI you have all your nutrients in the water column.

    which substrate??

Yes you can use Eco Complete on its own. There are alternatives though that might be cheaper. You could even use root tablets in your current substrate.

    Eco Complete Make Over

Thanks Alastair, I just wasn't sure if capping it would effect the eco complete in doing it's job. Most people seem to use Eco Complete as a cap.

    Eco Complete Make Over

When I set my tank some 2 years back I used Eco Complete. Over time the substrate now looks dirty as the colour of the eco complete has changed. At first it was a real dark grey but now it has areas that are brown, light grey and some bits have gone almost white in places. My question is can I...
