Hi
A week in the mature filter should do it for the sponges. Also mature leaf litter and presoaked wood will have bacterial colonies already established. As for your slow growing plants you can possibly add some Floaters too to do the heavy lifting till system starts running on 100%.
Of coarse...
Hi
Unfortunately the changes you made will require a little time to have effect as the plants will need to adapt to those.Keep removing the debris you see and stick to your maintenance.
If you are in UK PM me your details and I will send you some floating plants and whatever I can trim out of...
Hi
I keep SAP Puffers and they like flow so my tanks are quite turbulent. Never bothered my plants tbh.
I understand that you are frustrated atm and doubt everything but more likely is that your troubles are due to immature substrate lacking microbal colonies, low or fluctuating CO2 and strong...
Hi
Im not using the Oase 350 but your flow seems good to me and not too strong at all.
Have in mind that once plants grow in they will reduce the flow a little too.
Regards Konstantin
Hi
Not sure about Fluval filters but I run JBL CrtistalProfi 1500 on my 100l ish(Never bothered to measure it properly as came as freebie from uncles garden.lol)Fluval tank and it does the job very good
Regards Konstantin
Hi
you are lifting the outflow not the intake I hope.
If you lift the intake filter will suck air and thats not good
This bit you lifting up.
Regards Konstantin
Hi
I find skimmers very beneficial.
If you don't want to lift the lily pipe so it breaks the surface I will definitely consider getting one.
I cannot stress enough how important is to ensure good oxygen levels in new setups while your microbal colonies are establishing.
The dust is probably...
Hi
I used EX 600 on 72l tank for 8 ish years and EX 400 on a 36l.Both filters performed very good and are quite silent.Compared to other brands they do not have the best flow output in reality but thats very much depending on how you set it up.I don't use floss, fine sponges and don't stuff them...
Hi
I can not praise enough Tetratec filters for being silent . I think EX 600 or if loads of hardscape and plants EX 800 will be my suggestion.
Regards Konstantin
Hi
The coarse foam is fine to use.It will block slowly and alow greater flow.In time will start collecing mulm its just slower process .
I do most of mechanical filtration out of my main filter body(large prefilter sponge on the intake) and rarely open it.
Regards Konstantin
Hi
that filter will be fine for your tank.
Its actual flow will be sth like 600l per hour as Tetratec doesn't have the best flow but its very silent filter. Not sure about the booster as may reduce flow too much if you put fine sponge and floss in it but I guess you can try.You can have a...
Hi
it may be the case that the prefilter sponges are too fine.I like to use a relatively coarse one 20 - 30ppi as if go finer they block very fast and restrict the flow.
Regards Konstantin
Hi
Biological and mechanical filtration will occur in both filters anyway. You can separate different media in both filters but thats about it.You don't really want to have a filter that is packed with the so called biological media without any form of pre filter to it (to keep away the...
Hi
If you are CO2 user the hang on filter will degass more CO2 so you will need to adjust your injection rate.
No other downsides.
I use fairly large prefilter sponges ( cleaned werkly)on my canisters so most of the muck is caught in those but due to having messy fish had small internal filter...
Hi
Tetratec ex600 or ex800( if planning lots of hardscape) will be good filter for 40l tank and they very silent too.I run few for the last 10 years and still going strong.
Regards Konsa
Hi
U can use elastic bands and attach small coarse foam pad on the intake side to eliminate fish being trapped there.U will have to clean it weakly tho
Regards Konsa
Hi
U will reduce the flow by jam packing the filter with media.U dont need much media in as your plants and substrate will do your filtering. I have same filter with sponges and only half a basket of siporax in it and a bag of purigen and here is a video about my livestock levels(adult pair...
Hi all
Was doing maintenance and opened filter.I can clearly see flow has hit all media in the filter and has about 50 mini snails on bottom of the filter too.
Filter as expected spotlessly clean
Regards Konsa
Hi all
Thanks @dw1305 for the extensive reply.Much appreciated.I think the prefilter is just right as I dont have any flow reduction even when dirty.I doubt that the media is oxygen depleted as it smelling fresh when I open the filter.I know how a filter went bad stinks like rotten eggs before...
Hi
Its just a thought I have in back of my head.Im not saying that it is bypassing the media.I did put some new siporax about a month ish ago my have to open it to see if it has changed colour. If I have time later today. That will tell me where the flow is reaching in the media I suppose...
Hi
@ian_m I have the JBL e1501 running on one tank. Its all good but have notised the small coarse filter sponges are like brand new and spotlessly clean after half an year as is rest of the filter as I use prefilter rinsed weekly. There was very little muck settled in middle of top basket just...
Hi
The Koralia nano is only 900l/h
Try to find a good deal on JBL e 1501 it is perfect filter for your size tank.I have second hand one for £ 60 on my fluval 125 tank and is just right without spraybar just with the pipes.
Regards Konsa
Hi
FX6 is a great filter but U will be struggling with any inline heaters and other bits as hose size is a bit big for the average market items.
Regards Konsa
Hi
I was referring to flow.I didn't know your pump is 1000+l/h and my initial recommended pump of 350l/h would not have been enough for 40l tank.
The media I recommend is not obstructive and U can put in as much as U have space really.Just have in mind that in planted tanks flow is the thing...
Hi
If U have the cash to splash and time for the daily waterchanges for the first 3-4 weeks.ADA aqua soil is good substrate even in low tech. Will give U greater margin for errors.
I have kept at different times over the years (As I dont like fish mish mash)ottos,embers,Chilly/mosquito rasboras...
Hi
I have one modified betta duo tank that is with compartment (sump in back) I have 20 and 15 ppi sponges and siporax.Pump is 350l/h when clean.I have modified to get spray bar in place too.
10w arcadia strech wich is overkill as Im low tech but with floaters is managed sort of.
I have shrimp...
Hi
I would not worry too much about it.I don't think 800l/h is ovwrkill in 50l tank.I run 2 filters on my 70l one Tetratech 600l/h and one internal 600l/h for polishing water as have messy fish. The other tank 125l I have JBL e1501 1400l/h and Eheim skimmer 350l/h all filters in tanks on full...
Hi
I used to have brand new old-school Up Atomiser for 8/12 pipes that ordered by mistake.
Will check when Im off work and if is still arround U may have it for postage cost if U like.
Regards Konsa
Hi
When pump is off both sump and main tank should be same level.I will advice on removing any pads if they still there as get clogged very easy.I have coarse foam that came with it where the pads were then siporax everywhere else.I do keep thin floss pad before the foam where water overflow is...
Hi
I had same hum with mine e1501 too
Carpet underneath ,try to get the air out properly ( it takes quite a bit of shaking and fidling)and most important make sure the pipeline do not touch the cabinet once U cut them and will be ok ish (still much noisier compared to my Tetratecs but very...
Hi
If U not cleaned the filter put it on a bucket of water. It has mulm in it that will feed bacteria. It can go for weeks on it.If U cleaned it put a little fish food in the water and it will be fine.Just make sure hoses are secured in place as can slip out from pump pressure.
Regards Konsa
Hi
if U opt for internal filter instead of sponge one.Go for the Hidom AP-1000L of ebay or smaller size models if needed they are under a £6 and are really powerful, compact and silent
Cant fault them for the price
Regards Konsa
Hi
I use prefilter sponge of 20ppi and although being coarse enough not to inhibit flow if cleaned regularly keeps most muck out of my canisters.Opened two of them this week to get the purigen out for recharging one 6+ months the other about 8 + months since I last opened them for the same...
Hi Daniel
Its for both.
Its personal preference really what are U going to use. There is benefit of having two filters if U have the cash to splash on one.More filtration= cleaner tank.
If U have your tank lightly stocked and your only objective is to increase flow there is no need for second...
Hi
If the filter runs ok empty maybe somewhere the media is preventing it to close properly.Take some media out and try to close it properly. It may be few attempts tho.
I have a jbl 1501 that is pain to close correctly. It took me a week to stop it taking air in from somewhere, luckily no water...
Hi
It will do it as long as is good water movement arround it.It is not necessary to put it in filter.I always trow a handfull of gravel from an existing tank if I dont have mature media to put in it.Along with the plants (lots of bacteria on them too ) enough to jump start the cycling ...
Hi
Thanks for your input.
I am thinking that it only be a week till is exhausted and Im putting in way more ferts that I need anyway.Apart from initial fert suck up anything else I should be aware of?
Regards Konsa
Hi all
Need a larger prefilter sponge for my tanks. And being lazy to cut and drill one to size was wandering can I use an eheim pickup carbon impregnated sponge as is already drilled and the size and density I need.Normal sponges come in white unfortunately .I imagine after a while the carbon...
Hi
It actually is almost silent atm with a bathroom towel under it.Will cut some heavy duty carpet bits to size these days to put them instead of the towel.
Thanks all for the help.
Regards Konsa
Hi all
Recently got myself a second hand jbl e1501 greenline and have trobles with it.
First the filter made very loud humming noise that could hear before I went in the room. After very detailed inspection ,reassembly and hose reduction so they not even touching the back panel of my cabinet...
Hi
If HMF is not the thing U after Make sure the holes are above the substrate level as if it stirs it during waterchanges may get all sorts of organic and chemical impurities that are usually locked in it in the water column
Been looking for an update of tour project for a while as the...
Hi
AverageWhiteBloke just suggested U not to rush with stocking and is right about the bacteria colonising all surfaces arround the tank.In planted tanks most of the water filtration(purification ) is carried by the healthy and actively growing plants as they uptake any source of...
Hi
It will be no issue keeping it for few weeks hooked to a bucket just make sure the hoses a secure in place as this is main hasard
I imagine that there is some mulm in filter so additional feeding may not be necessary
Regards Konsa
Hi
In different countries based on the market situation the sellers will add to the manufacturer's warranty thats why U will be able to find some other warranty periods online.
From cover is a bit too general. Can U post pic and mark on it the leak to get better idea.
Regards Konsa
Hi
Most things have 1 year manufacturer's guarantee only Im afraid.
Where is leaking exactly.I have couple of them running about 6 years now.It happened in the past to get minor leaks after opening to clean them but fixed them easy with pulling the seals off and rotating them a bit before...
Hi
I think it would be better to leave the two filters separate(better flow distribution and less hassle )It will be much more beneficial just to fill them with biomedia and have prefilters all pond solutions inline ones if U would not like the look of sponges on the intakes.Since I added just...
Hi
You are on the right path.Flow is very important in planted tank as it helps nutrient distribution. What U aim is to have gentle plant movement in all areas of the tank.Just be careful when you move the airstone sometimes two flow patterns may be in conflict and cancel each other to a certain...
Hi
You are welcome.
Im not sure about the fertz. It will be better to email them and ask about it and the postage cost.
The hair stuff is probably algae. As I said you may try spot treating with your Excel doses using a syringe or remove leaves that are severely affected.
Regards Konsa
Hi
I am confident that the floaters will make a difference. Its not only light reduction they do.They are really good pulling amonia out of water column and helping to balance the aquarium.
I am using the ferts that ian_m suggested too.Having said that if your water is hard you may need to get...
Hi
As mentioned before U need to keep yor water clean to prevent debris accumulation(as that gives the algae chance to establish ) on the leaves but that is tricky depending on the livestock selection.
U will be better removing the leaves that are most effected if U can afford it as they will...
Hi
In addition will say that a bit of algae present is not a big deal and sth quite normal.By what you are writing seems U are just starting at this amazing hobby and if U have managed to keep the plants alive with some growth on them for 6 months is a good sign. There is loads of usefull...
Hi
The Co2 being a gas is always trying to escape.By having a airstone on U are breaking the surfase and increasing the gas exchange so aiding that.Liquid carbon sorces are not working on the same principles and there for not affected by the airstone.U can have it on with the Excel there is no...
Hi
If you don't supplement the tank with CO2 gas there is no point to buy dropchecker it wont give U a noticeable reading. If you do you shouldn't be running air driven filters while lights and the CO2 are on as will out gas too much of the CO2.
Getting some floating plants is definitely good...
Hi
The Purigen is good in planted tanks takes amonia and tannins out of the water but tad expensive. As for the filter setup make sure the water flows first trough the foams for mechanical and then trough the biological media. Most of the biological filtration in planted tanks is carried out by...
