    leaking JBL cristalprofi

Two things I'd check here: 1) On the Cristalprofi's, if you don't have the media baskets in perfectly level (with handles flat) then the clamps will still lock, but it won't be watertight. Try resetting all the baskets. 2) Seal as mentioned above.

    Can Koralias be adjusted?

I hope I solve this with a bit more flow then, because there's no way I can do that sort of water change regularity! Thanks for the feedback tim :).
  4. LancsRick

    Can Koralias be adjusted?

When you say "not done water changes" or "filter maintenance longer than normal" what sort of time periods are you meaning Tim? The reason I ask is that the whole point I went low tech is that with my job I can't commit to the sort of maintenance that high tech drives - if this is going to...

    Can Koralias be adjusted?

@tim - Plants in that tank. Minimal hardscape though so hard to say. In my other tank (Rio 180) I've got a small amount on the tips of the Sagi where it's shot up to the surface (guess that's from too much light due to proximity to water surface?), and little tufts on bits of the hardscape, but...

    Can Koralias be adjusted?

Aye, pretty much. Dosing 20ml ferts in 190l every 3 in 4 weeks. T8 lighting, 4 hour photoperiod. 20-30% water changes every month or so. Heavily planted.

    Can Koralias be adjusted?

Cheers, I'll grab a 1600 then - getting a bit down about the BBA in my tank to be honest, despite low light and short photoperiod I still can't get rid of it (plus I think my glut has degraded, mixed a new batch, spot dosed, left 20min, and it has done sweet f.a.!) Thanks guys.

    Can Koralias be adjusted?

Just wondering (in terms of flow rate) if these can be adjusted. I'm going to fit a circulation pump to my Trigon 190 (currently have 2x Eheim 2217) to try and assist with my BBA issues. I'm not sure whether to go for the Nano 900 or the Nano 1600 - I don't want to turn the tank into a whirlpool!

    1 or 2 filters

The thermofilters aren't that highly thought of from what I've read, they seem to have far more problems than the rest of the Eheim range. 2 vs 1 filter is a fairly personal choice, but I'll explain why I sit in the "I prefer 2" camp. - It's often cheaper to get two lower spec filters than...

    Regenerating purigen

Pretty sure (but not certain) that is one of the ones that makes Purigen lethal. To be honest, if you buy powdered Prime, the value for money it represents beats everything on the market. Never had mine near discus buffer, and not had any issues.

what shall I put in my fluval 305

The coarsest material should be at the inlet end of a filter, moving through to the finer stuff. This is so you don't clog up the fine stuff with any big bits of debris.
  12. LancsRick

what shall I put in my fluval 305

Typical thinking goes along the line of... - 2 mechanical filter - ceramic rings or alfagrog - 2 bio filter - ceramic beads etc - 1 fine particulate filter - floss - 1 item of choice, often Purigen. There's no set rule though really. You MUST have some sort of mechanical filtration in there...

placement of circulation pumps for this scape

Ok. 1) What's your filter? If it's powerful enough, you might not even need the Koralia's 2) In long tanks like that, a spraybar is nearly always the best option. There are some good guides on here about making your own plastic pipework, and to be honest, if it's just a spraybar, it couldn't...

Filter maintenance. How regular do you do it?

As long as you're cleaning in tank water from the same tank then there's no issue. Your thinking is right though, if you're running a dual filter setup and ever have to do anything that will negatively impact the bacteria in one filter, it's always better to leave as long a gap as possible...

Filter maintenance. How regular do you do it?

I've tried a few different strategies on my tanks, and now run this (or close to) in all of them. - Intake tube has a stainless steel mesh guard fitted Filter - Ceramic tubes for mechanical filtration (either two lots, or a single lot followed by a coarse sponge) - Ceramic balls - Floss...

Ah, in that case then a HOB would be a good option for aesthetics, I understand now. Have a look at offerings from Boyu, Azoo, and Eheim Liberty.

    Filter help..

A rough rule of thumb for filter throughput in planted tanks is 10x tank volume per hour. There aren't that many HOB options that will meet your needs. Generally, an external gives you a lot more flexibility in both media volume (as you've already spotted), but also the various inflow and...

    Pre filter foam for intakes

They keep things out, but they're then a pain to keep clean. The mesh is a nice compromise in my book :).
  19. LancsRick

    Pre filter foam for intakes

I've tried all manner of foam solutions (because they're cheap), and I've now got stainless mesh fitted to all my tanks. Nothing else comes close for keeping the shrimp out and being easy to clean, as well as looking ok. Hurts to buy them, but worth the investment.

    Opinions needed urgently

A simpler thing to check is if any of the filter seals are faulty. If you're getting a large airlock, then a bad seal is more likely than cavitation. More than that, I can't say I'm afraid, I don't know enough about fluid dynamics!! /Sorry OP, gone a bit offtopic I realise.
  21. LancsRick

    Opinions needed urgently

It's a pressure effect that causes bubbles to form, and can occur as a result of poor inlet flow (but there are many more causes, it's a really complicated effect). In short, whenever you regulate a pump, you should always regulate the output, not the input, to avoid things like backpressure...

    Opinions needed urgently

JBL's are the quietest filter I have ever used. Never had a need for spares, but impellers etc are easy to source online. I don't think any of the sponsors on here stock them, but Charterhouse Aquatics and Zooplus do.
  23. LancsRick

    Opinions needed urgently

You shouldn't really do anything to restrict inlet flow as you run the risk of cavitation in the filter. The general consensus on here is for JBL and Eheim filters usually - what price have you seen the Fluval for?

    JBL e700

I've got an e700 and two e901's here, and also own 2 eheim 2217's. I can't praise the JBL's highly enough, they're absolutely brilliant, and would be top of my list for any future purchases without a second thought.

    Eheim 2213 Noise

If you're certain it's not air or the impeller, the only other thing I can think of is if there's something trapped between the canister o-ring and casing that's transmitting the vibration.

Serious issues with Juwel Bioflow 3.0 filtering system

How have you set up the output? You should use the jet to set up a flow around the tank really, wish will help in getting all particles through the filter. As an aside, the internal Juwel filter on its own is underpowered for a planted tank, so you'll want to supplement with a powerhead or an...

    Eheim Pro 130 on a 30l Nano?

I'm not familiar with the specific model, but looking at the specs, the rated flow is 500. Since most filters can be throttled back to 50% without any problems, you should be absolutely fine.

    purigen question

If you put it before the floss then you're going to reduce the effectiveness because it will just get clogged with all the crud that the floss would have picked up - the purigen beads aren't smooth, and letting them clog will cause problems. What filter do you have?

    Eheim 2217 Spray Bar

That's partly because the people who really take the time to not only make a good scape, but also photograph it well, often remove equipment for taking the pictures! You'll definitely benefit from more flow.
  35. LancsRick

    Eheim 2217 Spray Bar

As a concept that *might* work, but you'll want the koralia halfway down the tank rather than at the top. Don't think of flow as something that you're trying to stop and redirect, more as something that you're just helping along in the direction it's already going. If the koralia is halfway...

    Eheim 2217 Spray Bar

Andrew, the rear will be a better option by far, otherwise you're going to create two conflicting flow patterns in the middle of the tank.
  37. LancsRick

    Eheim 2217 Spray Bar

Either use the crook, or just bend the tubing in and connect it to the spraybar inside the tank would be my suggestion.
  38. LancsRick

    One powerhead or two?

Being one of the many people who have tried a plethora of things for achieving good flow in a corner tank and not quite managed it, my advice would be to go for the pair. If it was any other shape of tank I'd say the single, but I think you'll be grateful for the pair, as long as you don't mind...

    Rio 180 internal....

I'd suggest this. 1) Get the uprated impeller for the Juwel filter. If it's a modern one, the same powerhead can accept the 1000lph impeller, which will set you back about a tenner. 2) With some acrylic pipe, make yourself a spraybar to go on the pump output rather than the naff little nozzle...

Do Eheim Taps grip 15mm OD hose?

I've just got home and looked at the taps on my 2217 - I reckon by eye it should be ok, since they just screw up to crimp the tubing against the connector barb. Worst case, a small insert in the tap would crimp the tube up if it's a little bit loose, so I reckon you're right in saying it should...

I'm going to give a project a go with some colourless, clear hosing, but I'm struggling to get 12/16 hose - everything is 12/15. Does anyone know whether the Eheim "gripping" taps will seal adequately over the 15mm hose? Cheers.

    Water changes...... Letting water stand?

As a rough guide, you can work out the length of time it will take with the formula below (but it doesn't take in to account that once you're warmer than ambient, you will be fighting against the water trying to cool down - in other words, you're best trying to heat the water somewhere warm!)...

    Water changes...... Letting water stand?

Your heater question is a bit misleading. Without a time llimit, anything will be enough to help it hit ambient! The short answer is yes, 300w will be fine, depending on how cold it is it might take an hour or 3.

Water flow in the planted aquarium?

If it's a single filter, where is your intake? My money would be on the fact that you're setting up a biased flow because you're only drawing water from one location in the tank. Think of the flow as a circuit - everything going ONTO the track has to be able to complete the loop and get OFF the...

    Eheim compact for flow...?

The Eheim compacts are very popular amongst the reef community, so I'd try somewhere like ultimatereef.com for a view on those. Always be careful about restricting flow on the outlet side of a pump, since you can end up putting additional strain on the impeller unit. If you're after restricting...

You'll be fine in terms of putting things inline. With regards to cutting hose, you don't really need to worry - basic things to ensure when you're refitting hose are: - a nice clean perpendicular cut, with no damage to the end of the hose (i.e. no splits or nicks that could creep) - a clean...
